Friday Music Day: Feb 8, 2013
Drop your random list in the LTEs section, and let's discuss music.
I wrote to Zack on Twitter yesterday that the Radio edit of Jay-Z feat the UGK's hit single "Big Pimpin'" was one of those songs I liked better in the radio edit. I re-listened to the whole radio edit after that. Bun B and Pimp C's verses are just silenced for the cussing, while some of Jay-Zs lyrics are re-written while others are silenced. Not sure what the point in re-writing was. However, I do find the rewritten "Thug 'em, HUG 'em, Love 'em, Leave 'em / Cos I don't TRUST OR need 'em." better than the original, where the words in ALL CAPS are F-word derivatives. The F-words just feel so uninspired and flat, like Z just needed syllabic filler for his rhyme. Especially the TRUST OR, which actually adds something to the meaning: what woman wronged him at some point?

List day!
1. Last week I mentioned the beat I made (back in 1999 or 2000) combining James Brown and Iannis Xenakis. Well, here it is, for your listening and downloading pleasure. The James Brown and funky drumming is obviously from "Funky Drummer", and the strings and horns are from ST-X Ensemble's 1996 recording of "Kraanerg" (which was released on Asphodel).
1b. I believe this was all done in Pro Tools. One of my driving inspirations was trying to break the software.
1c. The version that I rapped Slick Rick's "Children's Story" over is the last 40 seconds or so on loop. I've found on cassette with my distorted vocal take on it. Not sure if or how I'll ever share it. I need to remember to never sing when there are people around me that could hear it.
1d. I do have a few more things that I did back then that I might like to share. Some is on another CD I have yet to find.
2. Off to see Soundgarden at the Orpheum Tomorrow night.
3. Local Group the Bad Bad Hats have a new EP out. I find it quite enjoyable, and the price can't be beat.
4. Earlier this week, Zack had me craving New Kingdom at a point where there was none on my iPod. Fixed that, but that first day was tough.

Let's discuss music. Start with 10 songs randomly produced by your iTunes/iPod/other media player/music service/etc., and let's see what topics arise! Or just start with some other musical topic, Other citizens are bound to have thier own opinions!

So I've listened to a bunch of things folks here and elsewhere mentioned on their various "Best of 2012" lists and such. Somehow, my favorite new discovery is a single from 2007 reworking a single for 11 years prior:

Happy Friday Music People! I hope that you are enjoying the fine weather out there in Music Land! Why don't we start things off with everyone telling us ten songs that show up on a "random" or "shuffle" feature of their music device or service of their choice? Then we can just riff from there, ya dig?
FMD: End of 2012
At the end of 2011, I really sat down with my thoughts on what I had listened to and what I had sampled and everything and when it was done, I wrote this really cool long thing that I thought was awesome. But I had been drafting that for more than a month.
My music consumption this year has felt like I've been adrift. Continue reading FMD: End of 2012

Have a Merry Christmas and share some wicked randomness.
Best of 2012 next week? Probably. Definitely not this week, though. Keep yr tiger in its cage.
FMD: Dec 14, 2012
Keep your powder dry on your "Best of" lists please. We'll either do that on Dec. 28 or Jan 4. So far, I'm thinking Dec 28.
I have no idea what I'll have. This was the year I stopped following P4K, so I don't even know what came out or what was big. Maybe I can figure something out in a two weeks (unlikely).
