Minor Details: Games of 5/24

Rochester 10, Syracuse 4 in Rochester.  The Red Wings scored five in the first inning and were never threatened.  Toby Gardenhire had two singles and a double.  Luke Hughes singled and homered.  Jeff Bailey had two doubles, Ben Revere singled and doubled, and Aaron Bates had two singles.  Scott Diamond gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk in 5.1 innings.  Jake Stevens pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in his Rochester debut, giving up only a walk.

New Britain 7, Binghamton 3 in New Britain (Seven-plus innings, rain).  The Rock Cats scored five in the fifth and built a 7-0 lead.  The Mets had scored three in the top of the eighth and had none out when the game was halted by rain, but the decision to stop play does not appear to have been controversial.  Mike Hollimon went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, raising his average to .193.  Joe Benson was 2-for-2 with two walks.  Nick Romero hit a three-run homer in the fifth.  Steve Singleton and Mark Dolenc each had two hits.  Liam Hendriks was credited with a complete game, striking out nine in seven innings.  He allowed eight hits and a walk.

Ft. Myers 5, Tampa 4 in Tampa.  The Miracle scored two in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and move into first place in the FSL South.  Nate Hanson singled and doubled.  Reggie Williams hit a two-run homer.  Matt Schuld struck out four in five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and no walks.  Brad Stillings allowed a run on a hit and a walk in two innings to get the win.  Bruce Pugh pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.

Burlington 9, Beloit 0 in Beloit.  The Bees scored four in the fifth and four in the eighth.  The Snappers had only two hits, both singles.  Adrian Salcedo allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.2 innings.  Ryan O’Rourke threw 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit.

Minor Details: Games of 5/23

Rochester 5, Syracuse 0 in Rochester.  The Red Wings scored two in the first and three in the eighth.  Kyle Gibson struck out eight in five innings, giving up four hits and two walks.  Three relievers did not allow a baserunner, with Chuck James going two innings, Anthony Slama striking out two in one inning, and Jim Hoey striking out the side in the ninth.  Ben Revere singled and tripled in his first game back in Rochester, raising his AAA average to .302, and Brian Dinkelman had two hits.

Binghamton at New Britain.  Postponed.  No makeup date was announced.

Tampa 4, Ft. Myers 1 in Ft. Myers.  The Yankees scored three in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie.  Brian Dozier had singled and doubled, raising his average to .325.  Tom Stuifbergen pitched 5.1 shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks.  Brad Tippett took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Kane County 8, Beloit 5 in Beloit.  The Cougars scored four in the ninth to get a comeback victory.  Lance Ray singled and homered.  Derek McCallum doubled and drove in three.  B. J. Hermsen allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in 5.2 innings.  Jose Gonzalez took the loss, surrendering four runs on four hits and a walk in the ninth.

Other news—Clearwater and Jupiter played 23 innings last night, with Jupiter winning 2-1.  The score was tied 1-1 after six.  Each team used eight pitchers.  The teams combined for 31 hits but left 34 runners on base, 22 of them by Clearwater.  The time of the game was 5:37, or about as long as a typical Yankees-Red Sox game.

Minor Details: Games of 5/22

Syracuse 9, Rochester 3 in Rochester.  The Chiefs built an 8-0 lead half-way through.  Ray Chang had two doubles and a single, raising his average to .324.  Matt Brown had two hits.  Eric Hacker surrendered eight runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks in four innings.  Carlos Gutierrez pitched two scoreless innings.

New Britain 6, New Hampshire 5 in New Britain (Game 1—Scheduled 7 innings).  Joe Benson’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh won the game for the Rock Cats.  Steve Singleton singled and doubled and Chris Parmelee had two hits to raise his average to .322.  Deolis Guerra pitched five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks.  Tyler Robertson allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in two innings but was credited with the win.

New Hampshire 4, New Britain 0 in New Britain (Game 2—Scheduled 7 innings).  Chris Herrmann’s fifth-inning single was the only Rock Cats hit.  Herrmann was 1-for-1 with two walks.  Steve Hirschfeld struck out six in six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks.

Ft. Myers 6, Tampa 3 in Tampa.  The Miracle scored three in the third and never trailed.  Nick Romero had three hits.  Nate Hanson had two doubles.  Aaron Hicks and Jon Goncalves each doubled and singled.  Brian Dozier and Anderson Hidalgo each had two hits.  Logan Darnell got the win with 5.1 shutout innings, giving up two hits and three walks.  Andrew Albers struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief to get the save.

Kane County 4, Beloit 0 in Beloit.  The Snappers had only three hits.  Manuel Soliman allowed all four runs on six hits and three walks in five innings.  Blayne Weller struck our four in three shutout innings, walking none and giving up two hits.

Some interesting names who were not major league players on the list today, including an early broadcaster (McDonald), an author (Ritter), a college baseball coach (Bertman), and a college basketball coach who played minor league baseball (Penders).  However, there do not appear to be any major league players with connections to the Minnesota Twins born on this day.

Minor Details: Games of 5/21

Syracuse 2, Rochester 0 in Syracuse.  The Chiefs scored single runs in the third and ninth.  Ray Chang had two hits, which was half of the Red Wings’ total.  Both Chiefs runs were unearned.  Ryan Mullins gave up the first one in five innings, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking none.  Chuck James pitched two shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 1.75.  Anthony Slama gave up the other unearned run on a hit and a walk in two innings.

New Hampshire at New Britain.  Postponed.  The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader this afternoon.

Ft. Myers 7, Brevard County 6 in Ft. Myers.  The Miracle scored three in the fourth to tie the game at four, then scored three in the fifth to take the lead.  Nate Hanson and Danny Rams each singled and doubled.  Aaron Hicks had two hits.  Reggie Williams homered and drove in three.  Edgar Ibarra got the win despite surrendering five runs on six hits and six walks in 5.1 innings.  Bruce Pugh pitched the final two innings, allowing an unearned run but getting the save.

Kane County 6, Beloit 5 in Beloit.  The Cougars scored four in the first and never trailed.  All the game’s runs were scored in the first three innings.  Nate Roberts had two singles and a double, raising his average to .352.  Andy Leer doubled and singled.  Andrei Lobanov allowed all six runs on ten hits and a walk in five innings.  Ben Tootle and Martire Garcia each pitched two shutout innings.

Minor Details: Games of 5/20

Rochester 5, Gwinnett 2 in Gwinnett.  Aaron Bates singled and homered, Brian Dinkelman singled and doubled, and Ray Chang and Chase Lambin each had two hits.  Andrew Baldwin struck out eight in 6.2 innings to get the win, giving up one run on seven hits and two walks.  Jim Hoey struck out two in a perfect ninth for the save.

New Hampshire 6, New Britain 2 in New Britain.  The Fisher Cats scored two in the third and two in the fourth to build a four-run lead.  Yangervis Solarte had two hits, raising his average to .362.  Bobby Lanigan lasted only four innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits and a walk.  Spencer Steedley struck out three in a scoreless inning.

Ft. Myers 7, Brevard County 2 in Ft. Myers.  The Miracle scored three in the sixth to put away the victory.  Brian Dozier had a triple and two singles, raising his average to .322.  Aaron Hicks singled and doubled.  James Beresford drove in three runs.  Kane Holbrooks got the win, pitching five innings and giving up one run on four hits and three walks.  Brad Tippett worked two perfect innings of relief.

Kane County 4, Beloit 3 in Beloit (13 innings).  The Snappers scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game at two, and scored one more in the tenth to tie it at three, but ultimately fell short.  The winning run scored on a walk, a single, a wild pitch, and two more walks.  Wang-wei Lin had two doubles and a single.  Lance Ray singled and doubled.  Pat Dean struck out five in six innings, walking none and giving up a run on five hits.  Jose Gonzalez pitched two shutout innings.  Ryan O’Rourke started the thirteenth and took the loss.  Cougar pitchers struck out seventeen Snappers.
