Jace Clayton – .d.u.s.t..s.t.a.r.c.h..m.e.a.t.s.
Performed by Saul Williams and Mivos Quartet.
Jace Clayton did an album where he applied his electronic manipulations to music by Julius Eastman - The Julius Eastman Memory Depot. I couldn't find any live performances from that album, but if you read this, you should give that album a listen. Every time I do, I realize again how much I like it.
Eastman was a queer black radical in NYC in the '70's, so his piece titles tend to be provocative. Fair warning.
Pierre Boulez -Troisième Sonate
We take a moment to remember the composer Pierre Boulez who passed away this week. Here is his third sonata played by Paavali Jumppanen.
Hold on to your hats: freealonzo week is next.
Barbara Hannigan & GSO – Ligeti’s Mystery of the Macabre
I see your divas, and raise.
World-class Soprano, Conductor, Comedienne, Dancer, etc. Such a strange and wonderful bird.

John Luther Adams – Inuksuit
You have to admit this is cool. Dozens of percussionists, a big warehouse, and John Luther Adams' "ultimate environmental piece".
This is a 15-minute edit of a 60-minute piece, which is absolutely worth a listen if you are so inclined.
Roger Wright – Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues
I'm trying to think if there's a piano piece out there that I like as much as this one. I'm not sure there is.
Composed by Frederic Rzewski (pronounced Shev-skee).
Jascha Heifetz – Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35: I. Allegro moderato
Here's something a bit off our standard jive for the middle of your week.
From the 1947 film "Carnegie Hall", with Fritz Reiner conducting.
Felicia van den End – Suite Modale
No one watches videos on the weekend do they? In that case, I'm going to play a couple more unusual things.
Another musical influence is all the years I spent playing the flute. Along with dance classes, playing flute taught me a ton about rhythm, phrasing, and counting.
Bloch's "Suite Modale" was a favorite piece of mine. It seems there are a lot of videos of students performing it, but this was the only live professional performance I turned up. It's Felicia van den End on flute and the Magogo chamber orchestra conducted by Micha Hamel. It's probably not my favorite performance I've ever heard of this piece, but I do like it.
Julia Holter – City Appearing
Ed: Many thanks to Zack for a kickass week. It was so good, the painter wanted to pay tribute, which we will happily tag on.
The most romantic song about a nightclub fire as you'll ever hear. KEXP, 2012.

Ms. Holter is indescribable. Avant Garde? Classical? Pop? Ambient? I dunno. Just call her brilliant.
And because she can't be pigeonholed: Continue reading Julia Holter – City Appearing
Miyazono Kaori – Beethoven Sonata No.9 Op.47 “Kreutzer”
I mentioned in Movie Day that the finale of the anime Your Lie in April started streaming on Thursday so I watched it. The ending was about what I expected, and the show stuck the landing. One of the best shows I've watched in year. Anyway, in honor of that, here's Kaori's first performance from the show, "Kreutzer."
