The Hives – Hate to Say I Told You So
Because I wanna.
Cold War Kids – Complainer
Live version
Last live show I attended was Cold War Kids at First Ave. My ID was expired but besides that nonsense that it was a fantastic show. They were touring this album and like everyone they have another pandemic LP coming out soon. This isn't my favorite of their songs but seems appropriate. There was a time that I pretty much only listened to CWK and Bloc Party and it was great.
Bonus favorite song.
Spanish Love Songs – Self-destruction (as a sensible career choice)
Hey there citizens. Guess I'll be doing these for the week. I mostly listen to Alternative and Punk type music pop or otherwise. I haven't really thought through this week but I'm thinking the Bouncing Souls, Cold War Kids, and the Implants are likely going to pop up.
I listened to this Spanish Love Songs A LOT in 2020. It seems appropriate for todays video after another police shooting in the area. I live near Cup foods and Lake Street and the wounds and damaged buildings are a constant reminder of where we are both as a city and society. So yeah this song still seems on point.
“It won’t be this bleak forever."
Yeah right.
I hope you’re right.
Have you seen me lately?
The Beths – Mars, the God of War
Here are New Zealanders attending a live concert in October 2020. Someday we'll all be doing this again too...
Book Pairing: Mars! Earthlings Welcome by Stacy McAnulty, illustrated by Stevie Lewis
And this concludes Pepper week--thanks for having me! 😘
Bee Yang – Kws Txhiaj
I don't know the name of this specific song, but kws txhiaj is the general term for song poetry, a traditional Hmong art form. Bee Yang learned song poetry while growing up in Laos before the Secret War there, and after immigrating to the United States, he performed regularly at Hmong New Year gatherings and other celebrations. His daughter, Kao Kalia Yang, is a noted author and he has sung at a number of events with her in recent years.
Book Pairing: The Song Poet by Kao Kalia Yang
Bideew Bou Bess – My Feeling
I was looking for some Senegalese music and fell pretty hard for this.
The name Bideew Bou Bess means New Star in the Wolof language.
Timo Andres – Imaginary Pancake
First we had "Carrot Revolution" by Gabriella Smith, and now this.
Book pairing: Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast by Josh Funk, illustrated by Brendan Kearney
Jazmine Sullivan – Pick Up Your Feelings
I nearly went with a Tiny Desk Concert for the second day in a row . . . but then I found this!
Book Pairing: The Feelings Book by Todd Parr
Thao Nguyen – Temple
I got to wondering if Thao (of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down) had been up to anything interesting lately. Turns out, she has.
I'm posting this for the first song, but I'm certainly not going to stop you from listening to this whole performance.
Book pairing: The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir by Thi Bui.
