Frank Deford passed away over the weekend. I will admit that I only caught his GOML shtick while annoying my Wednesday commute in recent years, but he still seems like a hell of a journalist.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live
I wasn't going to do one of these, but I was driving around late tonight listening to his music and this song came on and I decided I had to. This is from a few years ago when Soundgarden reunited.

While doing a little research on this, I also found out that Jack Pearson, another Minnesota musician, passed away in April. I bet you a googleplex that some around here are familiar with him.

Bruce Springsteen – You Can Never Tell
(been holding onto this post for a bit. started before the man himself passed away, but only made all the more awesome since. definitely a worthy tribute.)
Okay, so I came across this from one of those "You'll Never Believe What Happens Next!!!!!!!11111!!!11" posts, and though I wasn't rendered "speechless", I thought it was pretty cool. Bruce and the boys take an unfamiliar song request from the audience (a very large one, mind you), spend a couple minutes hammering out the specifics, then proceed to play it in front of a crowded stadium. Well played, Bruce.

Clyde Stubblefield – Funk Thing
You don't have to do no soloing, brother, just keep what you got... Don't turn it loose, 'cause it's a mother. - James Brown to Clyde Stubblefield
Some drummers are all pyrotechnics. Some are all power. Others are rock-solid consistent. Not many could play one little twenty second break immersed in a ten-minute impromptu vamp and make an irresistible, booty-shakin' force that changes the landscape of music forever. There are probably more people in the world today who have – whether they realize it or not – heard a Clyde Stubblefield break or vamp than people who haven't. The Funky Drummer laid the rhythmic foundation of five decades and counting of the most popular music the world has ever known.
Bonus: Clyde and Jabo solo, together.
