Winter Wonderland: Games of December 15

MAZATLAN, GAME 44

MAZATLAN 7, LOS MOCHIS 4 IN MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Ricky Alvarez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third), a walk, and two runs.  Hector Mora was 2-for-4.  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Marco Antonio Duarte pitched three shutout innings, giving up four hits.  Four relievers each pitched a scoreless inning:  Ivan Zavala, Marco Antonio Rivas, Roberto Espinosa, and Jesus Pirela.

Opposition stars:  Francisco Cordoba was 3-for-4 with a double.  Isaac Rodriguez Salazar was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Rodolfo Amador was 2-for-4.

The game:  Mazatlan led 3-0 after one, but a four-run third for Los Mochis left Mazatlan trailing by one.  Giansanti homered leading off the fourth to tie it and Hector Mora's RBI single later in the inning put Mazatlan ahead to stay.  Mazatlan got insurance runs in the seventh and ninth.

WP:  Duarte (3-2).  LP:  Marcos Machado (0-2).  S:  PIrela (11).

Stats:  Isaac Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .347.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .303.  Rivas' ERA is 1.61.  Espinosa's ERA is 1.73.  Pirela's ERA is 1.45.

Record:  Mazatlan is 22-22, in seventh place in the Mexican League, five games behind Obregon.  They are a half-game behind sixth-place Mexicali.

Next game:  Mazatlan hosts Los Mochis again tonight.

GIGANTES, GAME 20

GIGANTES 11, AGUILAS 2 AT GIGANTES

Batting stars:  Ronald Guzman was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a walk, and four runs.  Juan Francisco was 3-for-5 with two home runs (his second and third), three runs, and seven RBIs.  Melvin Mercedes was 2-for-4.  Oneil Cruz was 2-for-5.  Alfredo Marte was 1-for-3 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Gabriel Ynoa pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk and striking out two.  Three relievers each pitched a scoreless inning:  Adonis Rosa, Domingo Tapia, and Ramon E. Ramirez.

Opposition stars:  Juan Carlos Perez was 2-for-3 with a double.  Rodrigo Vigil was 2-for-4.

The game:  Francisco hit a three-run homer in the first and the Gigantes led the rest of the way.  Francisco also hit a grand slam, in the eighth inning.  The Gigantes hit five homers in the game.

WP:  Ynoa (1-0).  LP:  Yoanner Negrin (3-2).  S:  None.

Stats:  Marte is batting .500.  Guzman is batting .333.  Logan Moore was 1-for-4 and is also batting .333.  Ynoa's ERA is 0.90.  Tapia has an ERA of zero.

Record:  The Gigantes are 9-11, in fifth place in the Dominican League, 2.5 games behind Este.  They are one game behind fourth-place Estrellas.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Escogido tonight.

LARA, GAMES 17 AND 18

LARA 7, LA GUAIRA 6 IN LARA (GAME 1--8 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Jecksson Flores was 3-for-3.  Josmar Cordero was 2-for-3 with a double.  Carlos Rivero was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.

Pitching stars:  Daniel Alvarez struck out two in two perfect innings.  Wilking Rodriguez pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and one and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Victor Diaz pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks and striking out three.  Junior Sosa was 4-for-5.  Danry Vasquez was 3-for-4.

The game:  La Guaira led 4-0 through five, but Lara scored four in the sixth to tie it.  La Guaira scored two in the top of the eighth, but Lara came back with three in the bottom of the eighth.  Osman Marval's RBI single tied it.  That single was followed by a hit batsman and two walks, the last of which forced home the deciding run.

WP:  Leonel Campos (3-0).  LP:  Gregory Infante (0-3).  S:  None.

LARA 6, LA GUAIRA 1 IN LARA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Josmar Cordero was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Yojhan Quevedo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Jecksson Flores was 2-for-3.  Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Gorkys Hernandez was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Pitching stars:  Leonel Aponte pitched three innings, giving up one run on one hit and one walk and striking out two.  Luis Oviedo pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks and striking out one.  Ricardo Gomez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  None.  La Guaira had four hits, all singles.

The game:  La Guaira scored one in the top of the second, but Lara scored four in the bottom of the second and never trailed again.  They had a walk and five singles in the inning.

WP:  Oviedo (1-0).  LP:  Ofreidy Gomez (0-2).  S:  None.

Stats:  Cordero is batting .432.  Vargas is batting .383.  Flores is batting .343.  Aponte's ERA is 1.08.  Ovideo's ERA is zero.  Gomez' ERA is 1.50.

Record:  Lara is 11-7, in first place in the Venezuelan League West Division, one game ahead of Margarita.

CAGUAS 5, MAYAGUEZ 2 AT CAGUAS

Batting stars:  Ex-Twin Brian Navarreto was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.  Emmanuel Rivera was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Luis Quinones retired all four men he faced, striking out three.  Yacksel Rios pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk and striking out one.  Jean Cosme pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Jose De Leon struck out twelve in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.  Noel Cuevas was 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Johneshwy Fargas was 2-for-4.

The game:  Leading 2-0, Caguas scored three in the fourth to take control of the game.  Cuevas had an RBI triple in the inning and Jancarlo Cintron had an RBI double.

WP:  De Leon (1-0).  LP:  Eric Stout (0-1).  S:  None.

Stats:  Navarreto is batting .438.  Henry Ramos was 1-for-4 and is batting .423.  Ex-Twin Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 and is batting .321.  T. J. Rivera was 0-for-4 and is batting .321.  Rivera is batting .310.  Xavier Fernandez was 0-for-1 and is batting .308.  Quinones and Rios each has an ERA of zero.

Record:  Mayaguez is 6-1, in second place in the Puerto Rican League, one game behind Caguas.

MAYAGUEZ 7, RA12 1 AT MAYAGUEZ

Saturday

Mayaguez scored four in the second to take the lead and three in the eighth to put it out of reach.  T. J. Rivera was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.  Emmanuel Rivera was 2-for-5 with a home run.  Hector Hernandez struck out nine in six innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits and a walk.  Robby Rowland struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

MAYAGUEZ 3, RA12 0 AT MAYAGUEZ

Sunday

Mayaguez scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh.  Henry Ramos was 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs.  Nick Travieso pitched six shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk and striking out five.

Record:  Mayaguez is 6-0, tied for first with Caguas.

Next game:  Mayaguez is at Caguas Tuesday.

RA12:  I have learned that "RA12" is so named because the team is owned by Roberto Alomar, who wore number twelve.  If I understand correctly, Alomar's original intention was to form an 18-and-under league, but it didn't come together, so he took the players he had, made a team, and put it in the Puerto Rican Winter League.  If so, it's no wonder that his team is struggling.

Saturday

Zulia scored three in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.  Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Josmar Cordero was 2-for-4.  Ex-Twin Logan Darnell started for Lara.  He struck out five in 4.1 innings, but allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk.  Angelo Palumbo pitched three innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks and striking out two.

ARAGUA 4, LARA 2 IN ARAGUA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Sunday

Aragua scored three in the first and did not trail after that.  All the game's runs were scored in the first two innings.  Gorkys Hernandez homered for Lara.  Ex-Twin Williams Perez started and pitched three innings, allowing four runs on six his and two walks and striking out one.  Maximo Castillo struck out three in three shutout innings of relief, giving up one hit.

ARAGUA 2, LARA 0 IN ARAGUA (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Sunday

Aragua scored both of their runs in the fourth inning.  Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Alejandro Requena started and pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk and striking out three.

Record:  Lara is 9-7, tied for first with Magallanes in the West Division.

Next game:  Lara hosts La Guaira in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

TOROS 5, GIGANTES 1 AT GIGANTES

Saturday

The Toros scored four in the second and were never threatened.  Ronald Guzman was 2-for-4 for the Gigantes and Seuly Matias homered (his second) for their only run.  Rogelio Armenteras started but couldn't record an out in the second inning.  His line is one inning, three runs, three hits, two walks, and one strikeout.  Richelson Pena struck out five in five innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.

AGUILAS 3, GIGANTES 2 AT AGUILAS

Isaias Tejada's RBI single in the ninth brought home Robel Garcia with the deciding run, breaking a 2-2 tie.  Oneil Cruz was 2-for-4 with a triple for the Gigantes.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk and drove in both of their runs.  Chris Ellis pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks and striking out three.

Record:  The Gigantes are 7-11, in sixth (last) place, three games behind Estrellas.  They are a half game behind fifth-place Licey.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Escogido tonight.

MAZATLAN 7, MONTERREY 5 IN MONTERREY

Saturday

Mazatlan scored four in the eighth to overcome a 4-2 deficit.  Anthony Giansanti hit a two-run triple in the inning.  Giansanti was 3-for-4 and had three RBIs.  Carlos Munoz was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.  Edson Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Ramon Rios was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Matt Gage started and pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks and striking out three.

MONTERREY 10, MAZATLAN 2 IN MONTERREY

Sunday

Monterrey scored four in the first and put it away with five in the fifth.  Carlos Morales started for Mazatlan and allowed five runs on six hits and no walks in two innings.  He struck out three.  Mazatlan got solo homers from Edson Garcia and Italo Mota (his second) for their only runs.

Record:  Mazatlan is 21-22, in seventh place, six games behind Obregon.  They are one game behind sixth-place Culiacan

Next game:  Mazatlan hosts Los Mochis Tuesday.

Mayaguez Recaps: Game Four

MAYAGUEZ 8, RA12 0 AT RA12

Batting stars:  Henry Ramos was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, and two runs.  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  T. J. Rivera was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second), a walk, and two RBIs.  Jeremy Rivera was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Luis Medina struck out six in three innings, giving up a hit and two walks.  Six relief pitchers each pitched a scoreless inning:  Jean Cosme, Luis Quinones, Nefi Ogando, Braden Hagens, Jacob Condra-Bogan, and Nicholas Padilla.

Opposition star:  Kenen Irizarry was 3-for-4.

The game:  Mayaguez scored one in the first, two in the third, and then one in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth.

WP:  Cosme (1-0).  LP:  Juan Santos (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Ramos is batting .500.  Ortiz and Rivera are each batting .412.  Rivera, Christian Sojo, and Xavier Fernandez are each batting .333.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks and is batting .308.

I don't know who "RA12" is or why they're called "RA12".  This was a home game for them and it was played in Hiram Bithorn Stadium, so I assume they're based in San Juan.

Record:  Mayaguez is 4-0, tied for first with Caguas.

Batting stars:  Gorkys Hernandez was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Ildemaro Vargas was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.  Josmar Cordero was 2-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Nestor Molina pitched four innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks and striking out four.  Yapson Gomez struck out two in two perfect innings.  Leonel Campos pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one.  Derian Gonzalez pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  David Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second), a walk, and two RBIs.  Eguy Rosario was 2-for-5.  Henry Centeno pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks and striking out one.

The game:  Cordero singled home a run in the eighth to tie it 3-3.  In the top of the tenth, a wild pitch scored one run and Rodriguez singled home another to make it 5-3.  In the bottom of the tenth, with two out, Lara got consecutive RBI singles by Hernandez, Deiner Lopez, and Vargas to win the game.

Pitching stars:  Montana DuRapau struck out two in two perfect innings.  Randy Rosario pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Fernando Romero pitched a perfect inning and struck out all three batters he faced.

Opposition stars:  Rainel Rosario was 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs.  Socrates Brito was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Jeremy Pena was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Domingo Acevedo struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks.  Joey Payamps struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

The game:  Estrellas scored single runs in the second and third and three in the eighth to put it away.  Rosario hit a two-run homer and Pena a solo shot in the eighth.

There was a 1:14 minute rain dealy.  There was supposed to be a second game, making it a doubleheader, but it was postponed.

Record:  The Gigantes are 8-9, but are only a game and a half behind first-place Estrellas.  They are a half game behind fifth-place Licey.

Mazatlan Recaps: Game Forty-one

MAZATLAN 6, MONTERREY 3 IN MONTERREY

Batting stars:  Ricardo Valenzuela was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Isaac Paredes was 3-for-5.  Ricky Alvarez was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  Francisco Rios pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk and striking out one.  Marco Antonio Rivas pitched a perfect inning.  Roberto Espinosa pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.  Jesus Pirela pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Jose Aguilar was 2-for-4.  Ricardo Serrano was 2-for-4.

The game:  Monterrey scored all three of their runs in the first inning.  Mazatlan scored two in the fourth, tied it on a single and two errors in the fifth, and took the lead with two in the sixth.  Edson Garcia hit an RBI triple to bring home the go-ahead run and scored on a sacrifice fly to provide an insurance run.  Mazatlan added one more in the eighth.

WP:  Rios (5-2).  LP:  Jesse Estrada (0-4).  S:  Pirela (9).

Notes:  Paredes is batting .365.  Rivas has an ERA of 1.69.  Espinosa has an ERA of 1.88.  Pirela has an ERA of 1.08.

Monterrey used eight pitchers, five of them for less than an inning.
