Mayaguez Recaps: Games Two and Three

MAYAGUEZ 12, MANATI 2 IN MAYAGUEZ

Wednesday

Leading 3-2, Mayaguez scored four in the sixth and put it away for good with five in the eighth.  Xavier Fernandez hit a three-run homer in the sixth and Christian Sojo hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the eighth.  Fernandez was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.  Kenny Hernandez started and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out two.

Record:  Mayaguez was 2-0 and was tied for first with Caguas.

MAYAGUEZ 14, MANATI 5 IN MAYAGUEZ

Thursday

Manati led 3-1 after two, but Mayaguez scored five in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth.  Jesmuel Valentin hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning.  Henry Ramos was 4-for-5 with a home run and a double.  Danny Ortiz was 3-for-5 with a home run and a double.  Brian Navaretto was 2-for-5 with two doubles.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a walk.  The last three are all ex-Twins.  Antonio Velez started for Mayaguez and pitched four innings, giving up five runs on ten hits and a walk and striking out two.  Five relievers pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.

Record:  Mayaguez is 3-0, tied for first place with Caguas.

Next game:  Mayaguez is at RA12 tonight.

Lara Recaps: Game Twelve

LARA 9, ZULIA 3 IN ZULIA

Wednesday

Lara scored six in the third and led the rest of the way.  Ildemaro Vargas had a two-run double in the inning.  Yordanys Linares was 4-for-5 with a home run (his third), two runs, and two RBIs.  Raul Rivero got the win, pitching five innings and giving up two runs on six hits and a walk and striking out three.

Thursday

No game.

Record:  Lara is 8-4, in third place in the West Division, two games ahead of Magallanes and Margarita.

Next game:  Lara hosts Margarita tonight.

Gigantes Recaps: Games Twelve and Thirteen

LICEY 4, GIGANTES 0 AT LICEY

Wednesday

Licey scored single runs in the first and second and two in the sixth.  The Gigantes had seven hits, three of them doubles, but went 1-for-12 with men in scoring position.  Luis Marte was 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Tiago Del Silva started and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks and striking out one,

Record:  The Gigantes are 7-5, in second place, a half-game behind the Toros del Este.

LICEY 3, GIGANTES 2 AT LICEY

Thursday

Dawel Lugo's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth brought home the tying and deciding runs for Licey.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Gigantes offense.  Seuly Matias hit a pinch-hit home run.  Raynel Espinal started, pitching two innings and giving up one run on two hits and two walks and striking out one.  Gabriel Ynoa pitched four shutout innings of relief.

Record:  The Gigantes are  7-6, in second place, a half-game behind the Toros del Este.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Estrellas for a doubleheader today.

Mazatlan Recaps: Games Thirty-nine and Forty

MONTERREY 11, MAZATLAN 0 IN MONTERREY

Wednesday

Monterrey scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Ricardo Valenzuela was 2-for-2 to lead Mazatlan.  Irvin Delgado started for Mazatlan but lasted just two innings, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks and striking out none.

Record:  Mazatlan is 18-21, in eighth place, eight games behind Obregon.  They are one game behind seventh-place Monterrey.

MAZATLAN 7, MONTERREY 3 IN MONTERREY (11 INNINGS)

Thursday

Mazatlan trailed 3-0 after two, but scored single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to tie it.  Maxwell Leon hit a three-run homer in the four-run eleventh.  Leon was 2-for-5 and the home run was his third.  Isaac Paredes (his third) and Carlos Munoz (his fifth) also homered.  Edgar Torres started and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks and striking out two.  Six relievers combined to give up no hits and one walk over the final 5.1 innings.

Record:  Mazatlan is 19-21, in seventh place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are two games behind sixth-place Culiacan.

Next game:  Mazatlan is again at Monterrey today.

Mayaguez Recaps: Game One

The Puerto Rican League started last night.  Our randomly selected team will be the Indios de Mayaguez.  Again, it's a short recap today.

MAYAGUEZ 8, MANATI 7 AT MAYAGUEZ

Manati scored three in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 7-1 lead.  Mayaguez then scored seven in the ninth to win it.  Manati made three errors in the ninth inning, and the deciding run scored on a wild pitch.  Ex-Twin Brian Navarreto hit a two-run homer in the ninth.  Eric Stout started and pitched four innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks and striking out two.

Record:  Mayaguez is 1-0, tied for first place with Caguas.

Next game:  Mayaguez hosts Manati again tonight.

LARA 15, ZULIA 1 IN LARA

Lara scored eight runs in the second and led all the way.  Ildemaro Vargas was 4-for-4.  Home runs were by Carlos Rivero (his first), Yordanys Linares (his second), and Jecksson Flores (his first).  Leonel Aponte started and pitched three shutout innings, giving up only a walk and striking out one.

Record:  Lara is 7-4, in first place, one game ahead of Margarita.

LICEY 5, GIGANTES 4 AT LICEY (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Back-to-back homers by Austin Listi and Sergio Alcantara in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie.  Licey got one back in the bottom of the sixth but left the tying run on second base.  Jose Siri (his first) and Carlos Peguero (his third) each homered for the Gigantes.  Chris Ellis struck out four in four innings, but allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk.

GIGANTES 11, LICEY 10 AT LICEY (GAME 2--8 INNINGS)

Logan Moore's two-run double in the seventh tied it 8-8.  Licey scored two in the top of the eighth.  In the bottom of the eighth, Peguero hit a walkoff three-run homer to win it for the Gigantes.  Moore also hit a grand slam in the fifth and had six RBIs for the game.  Jesus Liriano started but pitched just two innings, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks and striking out two.

Record:  The Gigantes are 7-5, in second place, a half game behind the Toros del Este.

MONTERREY 2, MAZATLAN 1 IN MONTERREY

Jose Aguilar's RBI single with one out in the ninth won the game for Monterrey.  Jose Augusto Figueroa led Mazatlan's offense with a 2-for-4 day.  Carlos Morales started and pitched five innings, giving up one run on two hits and four walks and striking out four.

Record:  Mazatlan is 18-20, in seventh place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are two games behind sixth-place Culiacan.

CARACAS 9, LARA 1 AT CARACAS

Batting stars:  Yonathan Mendoza was 2-for-4 with a double.  Josmar Cordero was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching star:  Wilking Rodriguez pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Frank Lopez pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and three walks and striking out four.  Ericson Leonora was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Alexander Palma was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs, and two RBIs.  Jose Rondon was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second), a walk, two runs, and three RBIs.  Jhonny Pareda was 2-for-5.

The game:  Mendoza doubled and scored on a Yordanys Linares single to put Lara on the board in the first inning.  It was all Caracas from there.  Rondon hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.  In the third, Ronny Cedeno hit a solo homer and Palma hit a two-run homer to make it 5-1.  Romer Cuadrado singled home a run in the fifth, and another scored on a double play, increasing the lead to 7-1.  In the eighth, a single and four walks brought home the final two runs.

WP:  Lopez (1-0).  LP:  Daniel Alvarez (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Mendoza is batting .419.  Gabriel Moreno was 1-for-3 and is batting .419.  Cordero is batting 389.

Alvarez started but pitched just two innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk and striking out one.

Lara used six pitchers.  Four of them have ERAs of nine or higher.  The lowest of the six was Fabian Blanco, who is at 5.40.

Record:  Lara is 6-4, in first place in the West Division by one game over Magallanes and Margarita.

Gigantes Recaps: Game Eleven

AGUILAS 7, GIGANTES 3 AT GIGANTES

Batting stars:  Jose Siri was 3-for-5 with two runs.  Ronald Guzman was 3-for-5.  Wilin Rosario was 1-for-2 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Oddy Nunez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.  Marcos Molina pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jose Valdez pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up two hits and a walk.  He struck out one.  Fernando Romero struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Rangel Ravelo was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  John Nogowski was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Wilmer Difo was 3-for-5 with a triple.  Melky Cabrera was 2-for-5 with a double.  Juan Lagares was 2-for-6.

The game:  The Gigantes scored in the first inning on two singles and a ground out.  Aguilas tied it in the third when Difo tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly.  They went into the lead to stay with a four-run fourth.  Ravelo singled, Cabrera doubled, and Nogowski drove them both in with a single.  Francisco Pena singled to score Nogowski, a Difo single and a hit batsman loaded the bases, and Johan Camargo walked to force in a run.  It was 5-1 Aguilas through four.

Rosario homered in the fifth to cut it to 5-2.  Later in the inning, Siri singled, went to third on Guzman's single, and scored on a double steal of second and home to make it 5-3.  But Aguilas got the two runs back in the sixth when Victor Robles homered, Camargo singled, and Raelo had an RBI double.

It was 7-3 after six, and it was 7-3 after nine.  The Gigantes loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning.  They did not threaten to get back into the game again.

WP:  Wendolyn Bautista (1-1).  LP:  Dustin Crenshaw (0-2).  S:  None.

Notes:  Siri is batting .349.  Guzman is batting .340.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 1-for-4 and is batting .333.  Luis Marte was 0-for-1 and is batting .308.

Dustin Crenshaw started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and no walks and striking out one.  Joe Van Meter started for Aguilas and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk and striking out seven.

Jesus Reyes, Nunez, Jose A. Valdez, and Romero all have ERAs of zero.

There were 28 hits in the game, 17 by Aguilas.  The teams combined to strand 21, 13 of them by Aguilas.

Record:  The Gigantes are 6-5, in third place, a half-game behind first place Este.
