Winter Wonderland: Games of December 14

We'll do all the winter baseball posts together and see how that works.  There was only one game today anyway, so it probably doesn't matter, but we'll see how it works in the future.

MAZATLAN

GIGANTES, GAME NINETEEN

GIGANTES 5, ESCOGIDO 2 AT ESCOGIDO

Batting stars:  Abiatal Avelino was 3-for-4.  Alfredo Marte was 3-for-5 with a double.  Carlos Paulino was 2-for-4.  Moises Sierra was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Dustin Crenshaw pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk and striking out three.  Matt Dermody struck out four in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Ryan Kussmaul pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one.

Opposition star:  Miguel A. Martinez pitched five shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks and striking out four.

The game:  It was scoreless through six.  It was 1-1 through eight.  In the ninth, two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Melvin Mercedes had a two-run single, and Sierra delivered a two-run double.

Stats:  This was Marte's first game, so he's batting .600.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 1-for-4 and is batting .303.  Dermody has an ERA of zero.  Wily Peralta gave up an unearned run in an inning and also has an ERA of zero.

Ex-Twin Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless inning for Escogido

Record:  The Gigantes are 8-11, in fifth place, three games behind Aguilas.  They are two games behind fourth-place Escogido.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Aguilas tonight.
