GIGANTES 6, ESTRELLAS 1 AT ESTRELLAS

Sunday

The Gigantes scored three in the first and two in the second to take a 5-1 lead.  Ronald Guzman had a home run in the first to put the Gigantes in front, then hit a two-run homer in the second.  It was essentially a bullpen game for the Gigantes, as they used seven pitchers.  Rogelio Armenteros pitched the longest, 2.1 innings, and gave up the only run.

Record:  The Gigantes are 6-4, in first place by percentage points over the Toros del Este.  The Toros have played sixteen games compared to ten for the Gigantes.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Aguilas tonight.

Mazatlan Recaps: Games Thirty-six and Thirty-seven

Shorter recaps today.

MAZATLAN 1, JALISCO 0 IN MAZATLAN

Saturday

The lone run came in the second inning on a Carlos Munoz homer, his fourth.  Francisco Rios struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up five hits and four walks.  Four relievers each pitched a scoreless inning.  Jalisco stranded eight and was 0-for-12 with men in scoring position.  Mazatlan stranded two and did not have an at-bat with a man in scoring position.

Sunday

MAZATLAN 7, JALISCO 2 IN MAZATLAN

Mazatlan trailed 2-1 after six, but scored four in the seventh and two in the eighth.  Jose Augusto Figueroa, who has all the vowels in his last name, hit a two-run double in the seventh to put Mazatlan in the lead to stay.  Figueroa was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, scoring three times.  Matt Gage pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks and striking out five.

Opposition star:  Jhoan Quijada pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

The game:  It was scoreless until the sixth.  With one out Hernandez singled, Linares doubled, Josmar Cordero hit a two-run single, Moreno singled, a hit batsman loaded the bases, and a ground out scored another run, making it 3-0 Lara.  In the eighth Moreno singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Rene Reyes single to make it 4-0.

Polanco homered in the second to make it 7-1.  Francisco homered in the fourth to make it 8-1 and Paulino homered in the fifth to make it 9-1.  Lara homered in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-2 and a sacrifice fly later in the inning cut it to 9-3, but that was it.

WP:  Reyes (1-0).  LP:  Josh Lowey (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Luis Jimenez was 1-for-1 and is batting 1.000.  Luis Marte was 1-for-4 and is batting .375.  Siri is batting .345.  Ronald Guzman was 1-for-4 and is batting .324.

Del Pozo, Reyes, Garcia, and Del Rosario each has an ERA of zero.

Marcos Molina started for the Gigantes but pitched just two innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk and striking out three.

Jose Lowey started for Escogido but did not get out of the first inning.  He went two-thirds of an inning, allowing seven runs on six hits and a walk and striking out two.

With a blowout game, Escogido substituted freely.  Only one player, outfielder Estevan Florial, played the whole game, and he moved from center to right.  Again, I don't know how big the rosters are, but Escogido used seventeen position players and six pitchers.  One of their pitchers was named Henry Henry, which I mention just because, well, his name is Henry Henry.

Record:  The Gigantes are 4-4, tied for second, two games out of first.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Aguilas tonight.

Mazatlan Recaps: Game Thirty-five

Opposition stars:  Luis Ivan Rodriguez pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks and striking out three.  Carlos Figueroa was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The game:  Each team scored once in the fourth.  For Jalisco Daniel Alvarez doubled and scored on a Henry Urrutia single.  For Mazatlan Figueroa singled, was bunted to second, and scored on an Isaac Paredes single.

Jalisco took the lead in the seventh on an Agustin Murillo single and two errors.  Figueroa doubled in the eighth and scored on Amadeo Zuzueta's single to make it 3-1 Jalisco.

Giansanti homered in the ninth to make it 3-2, but Mazatlan did not get the tying run on base.

WP:  Rodriguez (6-0).  LP:  Torres (2-4).  S:  Brennan Bernardino (6).

Notes:  Paredes was 1-for-4 and is batting .358.  Italo Mota was 0-for-2 and is batting .320.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-2 and is batting .311.  Figueroa is batting .308.  Giansanti raised his average to .300.

Torres lowered his ERA to 2.75.  Noriega pitched a perfect inning.

Record:  Mazatlan is 16-19, in seventh place, seven games behind Obregon.  They are two games behind sixth-place Mexicali.

Next game:  Mazatlan hosts Jalisco again tonight.

Lara Recaps: Game Six

MAGALLANES 8, LARA 5 AT MAGALLANES

Batting stars:  Gabriel Moreno was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Yonathan Mendoza was 2-for-4.  Joantgel Segovia was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Josmar Cordero was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Daniel Alvarez pitched three innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks and striking out two.  Jesus Sanchez pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Hector Rodriguez retired all four men he faced.

The game:  In the first, Carrera singled, stole second, and scored on a Reynaldo Rodriguez single to make it 1-0 Magallanes.  Lara tied it in the third on a Segovia home run.

Lara took its only lead in the fourth.  Mendoza singled, Gorkys Hernandez walked, and Moreno hit a three-run homer to make it 4-1 Lara.  Unfortunately, the lead lasted only until Magallanes batted in the bottom of the fourth.  Carlos Perez led off with a walk.  The next two batters went out, but an error extended the inning.  Reginatto singled to load the bases, Noriega had a two-run single, and ex-Twin Engelb Vielma hit a two-run triple, making it 5-4 Magallanes.

Lara tied it in the sixth on a Cordero home run.  Again, though, that lasted only until Magallanes came to bat again.  Flores led off with a home run.   Alberth Martinez then doubled and scored on Noriega's single, making it 7-5 Magallanes.  Magallanes added one more run in the eighth when Reginatto singled, stole second, and scored on a Noriega single.  Lara went down in order in the ninth.

WP:  Yohander Mendez (1-0).  LP:  Wilking Rodriguez (0-1).  S:  Jorge Rondon (2).

Notes:  Mendoza is batting .364.

Luis Oviedo allowed four runs in two-third of an inning, but they were all unearned, so his ERA remains at zero.  Sanchez has an ERA of  1.59.  Rodriguez remains with an ERA of zero.  Leonel Campos allowed a run in one inning to make his ERA 1.93.

Ex-Twin Yohan Pino started for Magallanes.  He did well for three innings, but his line is 3.1 innings, four runs, four hits, and a walk.  He struck out four.

The game was delayed for eighteen minutes in the second inning due to a power outage.

Record:  Lara is 3-3, tied for first place in the West Division.  All four teams in the West are 3-3.

Next game:  Lara hosts Magallanes tonight.

Mazatlan Recaps: Game Thirty-four

MAZATLAN 6, CULIACAN 2 AT MAZATLAN

Batting stars:  Isaac Paredes was 3-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Ricky Alvarez was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.

Pitching stars:  Ignacio Marrujo pitched four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks and striking out two.  Five pitchers each pitched a scoreless inning:  Marco Antonio Duarte, Gabino Avalos, Marco Antonio Rivas, Roberto Espinosa, and Jesus Pirela.

Opposition stars:  Alejandro Chavez pitched five shutout innings of relief, giving up no hits and two walks and striking out three.  Joey Meneses was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jose Guadalupe Chavez was 2-for-4 with a walk.

The game:  Almost everything happened in the first inning.  In the top of the first, Chavez walked, Michael Wing singled, Meneses had an RBI single, and a fielder's choice made it 2-0 Culiacan.  In the bottom of the inning, singles by Ramon Rios and Paredes were followed by an error that loaded the bases with one out.  Anthony Giansanti then hit a bases-clearing triple and scored on a wild pitch.  Alvarez followed with a home run to make it 5-2 Mazatlan.

And there it stayed, inning after inning.  The only other score was when Paredes led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run, bringing us to the final score of 6-2.

WP:  Duarte (1-2).  LP:  Hector Galvan (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Paredes raised his average to .365.  Italo Mota was used as a pinch-runner and remains at .348.  Carlos Munoz was 0-for-4 and is batting .317.

Avalos has an ERA of zero.  Rivas is at 2.08.  Espinosa is at 2.37.  Pirela is at 1.42.

Mazatlan had just three at-bats with men in scoring position, going 1-for-3.  In contrast, Culiacan had eleven at-bats with men in scoring position, going 2-for-11.

Record:  Mazatlan is 16-18, in seventh place, six games behind Obregon.  They are only one game out of fifth place.

Next game:  Mazatlan hosts Jalisco tonight.

Lara Recap: Game Five

ZULIA 1, LARA 0 AT ZULIA

Batting stars:  None.  Lara had just four hits, all singles.

Pitching stars:  Maximo Castillo pitched three innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk and striking out one.  Leonel Aponte retired all seven men he faced, striking out three.  Leonel Campos struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Jesus Sanchez pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Anderson Munoz pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two.  Will Changarotty pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

The game:  The game's lone run scored in the first inning.  An error, a bunt, and an Olmo Rosario single made it 1-0 Zulia, and the run held up.

WP:  Changarotty (1-0).  LP:  Castillo (0-1).  S:  Silvino Bracho (2).

Notes:  Jose Tabata was 1-for-4 and is batting .400.  Gabriel Moreno was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.

Castillo has an ERA of 2.25.  Aponte and Campos each has an ERA of zero.  Sanchez' ERA is 2.08.

There were only seven hits in the game, all singles.  There were four walks.

Despite that, the game still took nearly three hours, coming in at 2:57.

Record:  Lara is 3-2, tied for first with Margarita in the West Division.

Next game:  Lara is at Magallanes tonight.

Gigantes Recap: Game Seven

GIGANTES 1, ESCOGIDO 0 AT ESCOGIDO (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Ronald Guzman was 3-for-5.  Luis Marte was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Chris Ellis struck out seven in six shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Six relievers each pitched a perfect inning:  Miguel Del Pozo, Reymin Guduan, Wily Peralta, Juan Minaya, Randy Rosario, and Ramon Ramirez.

Opposition stars:  Denyi Reyes pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks and striking out two.  Escogido had only two hits in twelve innings.

The game:  While I still don't like the "start with a man on second" rule, this game is an argument for it, because no one might have ever scored otherwise.  They start that rule in the twelfth in this league.  Abiatal Avelino started at second, was bunted to third, and scored on an error for the game's only run.

WP:  Rosario (1-0).  LP:  Adonis Uceta (0-1).  S:  Ramirez.

Notes:  Guzman is batting .333.  Steven Souza was 1-for-5 and is batting .333.  Jose Siri was 0-for-5 and is batting .320.

All the pitchers the Gigantes used have ERAs of zero other than Guduan and Ramirez.

I don't know how big the rosters are in the Dominican League, but Escogido used 17 position players and 7 pitchers.  Not all at once, of course, but still.  The Gigantes used 12 position players and 7 pitchers.

Winning pitcher Randy Rosario is an ex-Twin, playing in their minor league system for several years.

Record:  The Gigantes are 3-4, in fifth place, two games out of first.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Escogido on Friday.
