  1. actually , we play the Yanks one more time to make up for that rainout in the Bronx earlier this year

  2. Looking for advice on my Target Field trip next month. SWA had a nice sale going on STL-MPS flights, so I'm now booked. I'm flying in Sunday 3:30ish and leaving Tuesday AM. Is there a good place to get together Sunday night (does Chucky Cheese serve alcohol?) or maybe Monday lunch?

I'm a bummed that there are no Target Field tours on Mondays; I was really looking forward to doing that. Still, I have an inside email address now, so I'm going to try meet Kris/Dazzle/Gordo if possible. Not sure what else to do with my time on Monday.

  3. Socal, you had better work on your spelling and grammar...or stop posting while inebriated. 🙂 Man, some days I do love the comments section at the Strib.

    1. Sorry, I only post under socaltwinsfan, but I can't say that I disagree with the sentiment for all cheeseheads.

Funny, I can't even remember the last time I opted for a hotdog when there were brats to be had.

  4. Lester Oliveras up to replace Blackburn on the roster and Swivelhips in the bullpen. Might as well get a look at what we got right now. I imagine Dumatrait will be relegated to the long relief role. Blackburn out of the rotation, Dumatrait pitching in less-important spots. It's hard to see how this injury hurts the Twins.

  5. LOL!

I hate when I watch the LLWS and some of these kids are like 6'0 or taller it's no fair

    1. Haha, I said about the same thing yesterday, though about a kid's weight. Some of those kids at 11-12 weigh more than I did until I was 20.

      1. Unfortuntely I have done a really good job subsequently passing their weight during my 20s

      2. I got pretty big when I was 12 and was among the tallest kids in school for a few years, so all I think about when I see some of these kids is how much it sucked when everyone caught up and I no longer had any advantage in basketball.

        1. we had a guy like that -- he was 6'0" in 6th grade, and was THE agegroup player in Spamtown. He was still 6'0" when he graduated, and never really played past 8th grade. Big-man skill set in a guard's body.

          1. Heh, 6'0" must be the magic height for this sort of situation because that's where I ended up as well. 8th grade was fun, 9th and 10th less so, quit after that.

            1. Our guy turned into a hack as others grew past him. Similarly, we had a guy who was about 5'10" or so in 7th grade who was the starting center on the traveling team in 7th and 8th grades (and was a superstar running back in 6th and 7th grades in the local tackle football league that started up when I was in 6th). He likewise stopped growing and didn't play after 9th.

I remember getting sat down after the traveling club season along with the other bench riders (I was like the 8th man on the team), where the coach gave us some hard advice on our likelihood of ever progressing to being regulars. That group included three guys who ended up starting on the sophomore team (although only one of us got regular PT on the varsity as juniors or seniors; but we were well represented as standouts in other sports in h.s.). The point being that it's pretty hard to project where a boy will end up physically/athletically when he's in 8th grade.

              1. I was almost the exact opposite. I started high school at like 5'3" and grew 3-4" every year (plus another bit in college). It really messed up my tennis game, as every year I had to relearn to serve. It did help my skiing, though, which was nice.

                  1. Closely. We're about the same height, too. Thinking about it, it seems like a good idea to switch nicknames every now and again, so I'm taking up AMR's method of identification.

                1. (plus another bit in college)

I graduated high school at 5'8", and started my sophomore year of college at 6'1". I got a lot better at basketball that year, coincidentally.

              2. That's why I think all youth basketball programs should run a motion offense until they get to high school. It's a lot easier to learn to play the post later than to learn ball handling and shooting later.

  6. This cat is sick. Bicyclist extraordinaire Danny Macaskill.

  7. Dropped the girl off at college this weekend which was totally weird. I'm not sure she is ready for this but the truth is, she probably is ready. It's more a question that her parents weren't ready for this day

  8. The Twins have placed Jim Thome on waivers. This makes me quite sad, not only because the towel has officially been thrown in, but because I really like Jim Thome in a Twins uniform. Hopefully he comes back to win his ring with the Twins next year.

Presumably he winds up back in Chicago?

    1. Boo.

I presume that they would pull him back unless he were claimed by a team he wanted to go to. The Gentleman deserves to be relevant to a pennant race/playoff battle.

So, does this mean he's not available for tonight?

    2. Coincidentally, I was just updating his birthday bio (his birthday is Saturday). Sounds like I may have to do it again.

      1. oh, and teh Stoopid. It buuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnnnnnns.

What a shame, all thanks to that terrible Joe Mauer contract. Now we are paying the price as we have to get rid of players with talent and replace them with green low cost talent. Thank you Bill Smith and thank you Joe Mauer, for being a super greedy singles hitter.

          1. Hard to say, since B-R still isn't listing arb eligible players, but it looks like next year's payroll will be ~$80 million if none of the free agents return and Nathan's option is declined.

... Any chance Joe Mauer would clear waivers if we agree to pay 70%?

          Oy, that one's a whopper.

      2. I thought it was typical to put just about every player on waivers, just to see what happened.

        1. Yeah, right. You can always pull them back again, but if they clear waivers, then you have lots of options. Or if they don't, you might work something favorable out.

          1. True, true. I'm just lamenting the (apparent) signal about Kubel. Maybe it is just an attempt to assess his market value in advance of free agency, but I'm reading it as a soft intention to not re-sign him.

            1. I'd be less worried about this if Cuddyer was also on waivers, but as is, I have to think bS is probably right about the intentions.

              1. I believe that you can only place five players at a time on (revokable, late-season trade) waivers. Obviously, Delmon was put on a while ago and didn't pass through.

I'm not worried about this at all except that I wonder why it's announced. Usually, these things are silent and only the other clubs know who's available.

Chicago is still 0.5 GB Cleveland in waiver priority. With Hafner injured, I'd venture Cleveland would make a play for him, too. If Thome would prefer Cleveland or Chicago, I'd expect the Twins to time his posting to facilitate a trade to the team he prefers.

I have no idea how no-trade clauses impact waiver claims. If a player can't be traded to the team without his permission, can he still be claimed (without a trade)?

              2. I would hope they'd put Cuddyer on waivers. A 33-year old pending free agent having a career year is the type of player you try to throw out there.

        2. yeah, I'm not too worried about it yet. It's not like they're obligated to do anything if Kubel is claimed. Is there a team that needs a power left-handed bat for the playoff run? I can't imagine getting a good prospect unless we eat his salrary, but I'd be willing to listen.

          1. [dido]. I think this is more just gauging interest than the start of a fire sale, especially since they're a month too late for that.

  9. fwiw, green bean pesto is pretty tasty. I started with this recipe and made some changes (twice the oil; orange zest and the juice from half a clementine in place of the lemon; more garlic; no white wine and very little water; and I didn't cook the beans for eight freakin' minutes -- it was more like three; they still were slightly al dente). oh, and I drained the beans and shocked them in ice water.

I mixed about 1/3 of the pesto in with 500 g of whole wheat spaghetti (cooled to ~room temperature), reserved 1/3 of cheeseless pesto, then blended in 1/3 cup of cheapo parmesan with the remainder, topping each bowl of pasta off with a healthy spoonful of the appropriate pesto. Served with sauteed cherry tomatoes and, for the meatatarians, sliced leftover italian sausage.

    1. That was nothing more than a sentence chopped into three lines. I hate it when someone calls it a Haiku when really it's just three lines that (luckily, or forcedly) have the right combination of syllables.
