May 29, 2012: New Digs

We slept in our new place last night. It's been a tough move, with the Milkmaid and I working a lot, and Sour Cream sick nearly the whole time. Still, it's mostly over, so...good enough.

    1. Took me a few minutes, but I found him. The inclusion of the Tin Woodsman in this seems a little strange. Also, I recognize way more of those than I probably should.

    2. Loved the inclusion of Calculon. Too bad there wasn't Hedonism Bot. He is by far my favorite minor character on "Futurama"

        1. oh yeah - I blame the brownish-gold colour, since I always think of them as silver-white.

    1. Now that I know Gardy calls him "Su", I wish the Twins could have kept him.

  1. I notice we've got a spel chek feature now. Nice.

Also, what happened to my identicon? I don't like this thing I've got now. I want to be the old me!

    1. You now look like something from Space Invaders. Yeah, you should do something about that.

      1. I was thinking more along the lines of something from Transformers.

        The Phyllosifizer!
        More than meets the eye!
        Robots in the sky!!

    2. Retro avatar! I got tired of the 'identicon', so decided to try something different. There's also monster and wavatar options.

      1. Can we set up something else for me? I could go find something, but that ain't happening this week, since my spare time shall be devoted to interview prep.

              1. Right. But the one that it had been generating was the generic identicon for my e-mail address, just like I have over on Spooky's site.

  2. WGOM Radio

I'd like to record a NBA pod this week - preferably tomorrow or Thursday. I know that may be short notice for some, but can we make it work?

Also, the Euros start next Friday, the 8th. Can we record a preview early next week?

    1. He's officially my favorite temporarily-crippled Spaniard. Almost as entertaining off the court as he is when he's playing!

His rehab seems to be a little less strenuous than the pics and vids of Adrian Peterson I've been seeing, though 😉 .

  3. Hey guys, my apologies for spacing out the game log on Monday. If it's any consolation, I'm really, really sore from all the yard work I did yesterday.

  4. Inane quote of the day (just heard on LA sports talk radio):

"Minnesota despite being irrelevant since signing Joe Mauer draws well."

The context: MLB teams can be divided into categories of "can't draw a crowd even in good seasons," "can draw well if they are having a good year," and "always draws well." First of all, I couldn't parse his sentence above. It could have been taken three different ways:

1 - "Minnesota, despite being irrelevant since signing Joe Mauer, draws well." (meant literally)
2 - "Minnesota, despite being irrelevant since signing Joe Mauer, draws well." (meant sarcastically)
3 - "Minnesota -- despite being irrelevant -- since signing Joe Mauer draws well."

Not to mention which Mauer signing he meant. I believe the first version was what he was trying to convey. But in even the most charitable interpretation, it's nonsense. The Twins have always had a win-driven fan base; the new stadium no doubt moderated the effects of the past 1.25 seasons' of suckitude.

    1. It's gotta be either the first or third- sarcasm doesn't play well on radio, since either a bunch of your listeners don't get it and therefore think you're stupid, or you make it obvious enough for everyone, which makes you Jim Rome (and stupid).

And you're right, the new stadium has more to do with people continuing to show up than Mauer's signing, but the Twins better start winning soon.

    1. I don't get the "central location" thing. Why not have the replay ump at the park? Are they just trying to save a little on travel costs?

        1. Can he, though? What happens if he's watching one game and there's a close play in the other game? Is someone going to signal him to watch the replay or something?

          1. I think it's probably a lot more efficient this way. Even if your require one umpire per game, so you will sometimes have 15 umpires working simultaneously, some days you can get by with fewer, so you can give some of your staff some days off. Less travel also makes the job more attractive, so you potentially have more (and better) candidates to choose from when staffing these positions.

      1. The NHL has its reviewers in a central location. They also review every goal, so it's used constantly.

    2. I think that makes a lot of sense. I am still wary that this will change the way that umpires make calls (for instance, more likely to make a fair/foul a fair ball), but if you're going to use video evidence to change calls, it only makes sense that you'd have an official specifically looking at the video. It also continues to keep the coaches out of the officiating, unlike the situation in the NFL.

    3. That's what they do in cricket.

Two umpires are in place on the playing field while there is also a third umpire off the field who is in charge of video decisions. This is where the call is too close for the on field umpires and they refer it to the third umpire who reviews slow motion video replays to make a decision.

  5. Comment on a fangraphs article about Mauer:

As long as Mauer plays 90+ games at catcher and OBP’s .380+, the contract won’t be what prevents the Twins from contending. He’d be a $16M a year player making $23M. Are we to believe that overpaying a guy by $7M a year is THAT big a deal?

Let’s be honest… the Twins would just blow that extra $7M on some 36 year old innings-eating veteran who pitches to IMPACT.

    Pitches to impact.

    1. Pretty sure that's what Marquis did. Some of those balls left huge craters in the outfield stands.

    1. I have started calling people corncobs in my day to day life. My wife does not approve.

      1. Just heard Guy Fieri is drivin' the Indy 500 pace car! Man, just when you think this country's in trouble, we really turn it around.

        Too funny.

    1. There was a stitch on NPR on Americana recently also, and links on their website with riffs, etc.

  6. Sano homered for the second straight game today. Beloit won in extra innings when the batter circled the bases on a popup to first base. The description said there were a throwing error on the first baseman, so I'm guessing the popup landed just out of the reach of the first baseman and the batter was attempting to go to second or third and threw the ball away, which allowed the go-ahead run to score. The batter was awarded a double on the play.

      1. I assume Deaner is too busy fishing to confirm this. Still, if Gener's out I assume that's pretty much that. None of the stuff they worked on apart (Moistboyz, Aaron's solo record) ever matched the highs together, but was okay. They haven't put out a great record in close to nine years (La Cucaracha had its moments but was only about half good), so I'm not terribly crushed about that, but I really, really wanted to see them live one more time in a venue I didn't hate, not being surrounded by idiot trustafarians.

      1. So was that in Cali, Detroilet, or Minny? Very misleading.

Oh - bS made that point clear - lol.
