      1. It was a fun game. Especially since every game I attended last year turned into a shit sandwich.

I think that it was the first inning and they had just turned the double play. I had never sat in the Legends Club before - I highly recommend. Soft, squishy seats. Cute(!) waitresses(!). Baseball, like, right in front of you.

        1. And you're very own concourse separate from the riff-raff! My one trip to Target Field was in the Legend's section, so I'm afraid to sit anywhere else.

          1. I particularly like how they covered the glass in the doors so they couldn't see in. I don't want people like that looking at me. Ew.

    1. Ooh, you went all instagrammy with the photo, making it washed out so it looked like it was from the 60's or something. Know what would be cool? Using some mad photoshopping skills and remove the newer skyscrapers in the background so that it looked like the ballpark was there in 1965 or something. The only building you could see from that vantage point would be the Foshay, and perhaps the Dain tower.

  1. Great softball game last night. Started off rocky by giving up 4 runs in the 1st and 2 runs in the second while answering with none of our own. However, we broke it open in the 3rd with a 3 run homer, then in the 4th got 10 straight hits to score 9 runs. They guy who led off also got the 1st out on his 2AB. It was great. We let up another 3 runs the next inning to cut our lead to 12-9, but we got 'em out 1-2-3 in the top of the 6th and the ump called the game ours on account of time. Our defense played great, very few misplays and no drops in the outfield. Their team also played great, their LCF caught 2 very long hit balls that nearly hit the fence. Great evening of softball and good for our 3rd victory in a row. Now we're 3-4.

    1. Had a similar experience at our game last night. Back and forth until the 4th when we scored 5 to push our lead to 11-6. They came back with 2 in the bottom half and added 2 more in the 5th. I was able to drive in a run on a double and took third on the play with an error by the left-center fielder. I walked home on a sac-fly but that was our last run of the night as one of our guys "tagged" on a fly ball and was doubled off third. He left way too early (ignoring the third base coach) and was left standing at home as the throw went to third. They added one more in the 6th and 2 in the 7th to tie the game at 13. Bases loaded and 2 out and their final batter flew out to me in right-center. That's how it ended. Not good enough to win, but good enough to end our losing streak. We're now 2-5-1. It was gorgeous out there so we took batting practice and drank beer for an hour after the game.

      1. Also, I can't find the conversation here to link, but I told the guys about FTLT's method for drinking a beer. They all laughed at the miller punchtop can gimmick, but were incredulous that it could be accomplished using only your thumbnail. I was successful on the first try. Thanks for the party trick hitman.

  2. Through 60 games, fangraphs has Mauer's contributed value to date at $8.5 million. Projected out over the season, he's on pace to deliver $22.95 million worth of value to the Twins. In other words, he's playing right at the level of his contract.

      1. I believe he meant to type $22.95 million dollars. 🙂

that said, I believe we can all pitch in on the ooooooooooooooos.

          1. That's a big file my browser is asking me to download when I click that link, sean. Is it Nigerian dollars?

    1. Also according to fangraphs, Darin Mastroianni has the same WAR as Justin Morneau. I find that really funny for some reason.

    1. Boo. I'd like so very much to have a conversation about health care, but that is frowned upon.

      1. Sorry, those stories aren't as dumb as Peter King finding it necessary to inform us that his daughter was born at the same hospital as Derek Jeter.

        1. Maybe Peter King is Universal Enveloping Algebra?

Our hero Derek Jeter looks at all the people his bodacious ollie killed. "Buncha noobs," he said, awesomely. "I’m not sorry. They were lucky to live even two seconds, or two weeks on the same planet as me." Jeter flipped the bird at a nearby cat and skateboarded off to Yankee Stadium...

  3. Anyone else see Prometheus this weekend? Ridley just doesn't have it anymore. Not surprising at 74 (and after seeing the train-wreck that was Robin Hood).

    1. the Boy saw it this weekend and declared it to be teh Awesome. I haven't seen it yet, but am looking forward to doing so.

      1. It's not a waste of money. It's visually very impressive. And the tension is thick. I watched half the movie curled up in a ball.

Plus Fassbender more than makes up for the annoyance of Noomi Rapace. Striger Bell and Theron also did a great job.

    2. I really enjoyed it while I was watching it, but yeah, in hindsight it certainly had its flaws. I'll be interested in watching the director's cut when it's inevitably released. I bet a lot of stuff was left out of the theatrical version.

But man, seeing it on an IMAX screen... what a spectacle. It really was gorgeous.

      1. I have heard that they cut a scene where

          1. Indeed. I fully expect the almost 3 hour long director's cut to be a large improvement over the theatrical version. Kinda like Blade Runner.

    3. Just saw it today. It was very okay, bordering on enjoyable. Fassbender, Elba, and Theron were great (the last of which surprised me, because I've never been a big Charlize Theron fan). Noomi was 'eh'

  4. Buxton signed, sealed, delivered. One of the good things about the new rules is that the signing deadline is much earlier, meaning that these things now get done so that the kid will be playing pro ball this summer.

  5. Benefit #1726 Working At Home: getting the lawn mowed during lunchtime

Pros: being able to get the lawn mowed during lunchtime

Cons: having to mow the lawn during lunchtime if it needs it

Okay, sorry, that one's a push.

      1. The timing is delicious of course, since just yesterday, the people of ND decided to allow the university to retire their nickname (although some folks vow to fight on and go for the constitutional amendment!).

          1. Keep up the fight! Never give in! I read that some of the staunchest supporters now want a law forbidding UND from taking a new nickname. A law! Forbidding the school from having a nickname! This nonsense amuses me to no end.

              1. With all their Canadian "student athletes", I think they should be called the Hosers.

    1. North Dakota State’s biggest rival.

heh. Whatever floats your boat Grand Forks.

          1. It's from one of the defining scenes in the movie. The first few minutes aren't played (they definitely wouldn't fit the scene).

          2. Sorry, not a mob film fan, regardless of how great it is.

Actually, I'm interested in this too. I wouldn't say that about any backdrop...I have favorite films that involve things that would never interest me in my regular life. I don't think I have a genre or setting out there that I ignore regardless of the talent involved. I'm interested in why that happens.

    1. There is a great parody of the Layla scene on an episode of Community ('Contemporary American Poultry')

  6. Just noticed that we miss playing against Cliff Lee. The Twins won't be his first victory this season, but it also means Revere won't be laying down several bunts against him. Bummer.

  7. I don't know why, but I'm more excited for the year in film than any previous year. So much so that I've already called my bookie with my 2013 Oscars picks.

Best Supporting Actor - Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained)

    1. I love that none of these movies have actually been... you know... released. Or did you pick up bootleg copies on a side street in Shanghai?

  8. Twins batters now have a 101 OPS+, tied with the Tigers for the best in the AL Central. Twins are still below average in runs scored.

  9. Horray! We were selected to give some landowner money to occupy a property he owns. Really, this is a relief. This town is not easy to rent in if you want to live in a decent, mildly safe neighborhood.

    1. I'm more disappointed in Stern than Rome, because in a conversation between the two, I expect Stern to be the adult. Rome can be a jerk, but from reading the transcript, it does not appear to me that he was trying to be a jerk there.

I'm sure Stern gets tired of answering questions about the lottery, and maybe he was just having a bad day, but he comes across as trying to intimidate people into never asking him that question again. He may well succeed at that, but the issue won't go away just because he intimidates people into not asking him about it.

For the record, I think it's silly to think the NBA has been rigging the lottery for years. However, there are people who think it, and what Stern did won't make them stop thinking it. It's his job to deal with stuff like that, not to wish it away.

      1. but the issue won't go away just because he intimidates people into not asking him about it.

This applies to so many things in so many different contexts.

  10. CH alert- neat article about quirky baseball fields in the Boston area. I'd have liked some more pictures, but evidently they don't want to show photographic evidence of a tree on the playing field.
I play softball on a field where one of the light posts is about twenty feet inside the outfield fence (oh, don't worry, it's got old truck tires around it for cushioning), but I think a shade tree out there would be much better.
