    1. I found what he had to say about catchers interesting, given the way Bill Smith tended to give them away.

  1. Hey does anyone mountain bike? If so are you interested in taking the day off Friday and joining me at a local (Twin Cities) mountain bike trail? If you've never done it before it's a lots of fun and there are plenty of easy routes to start off on. Let me know.

    1. Amnesty explained.

The amnesty provision allows a team to waive a player and not have his salary count against the salary cap or luxury tax. The player will still receive his salary for the season.
      ...

      1. He gets paid just for the season of the remainder of the contract? Weird. One positive about no salary cap in baseball is not having to figure out whether a trade fits under it or not.

        1. The NBA salary cap and all of its associated exceptions and loopholes is a system that only a lawyer could enjoy. Maybe lawyers and Dugeons & Dragons geeks. And as far as I can tell, it's better to be over the cap than under the cap, or at least it's not obvious that one situation is better than the other.

          1. This is one reason I'm resistant to salary caps for MLB: I just don't want to have to figure that crap out, it would diminish my enjoyment of the game.

            1. Yeah, I'm more in favor of a progressive, harsh luxury tax. Say 15% over $110M, 30% over $120M, 45% over $130M, etc. I think something like that gets you 80% of the benefits of a hard or soft cap for 20% of the effort and fewer odd side effects. (Like big, expiring contracts to bad players somehow being a valuable trade commodity.) Sure the Yankees could still spend a lot, but it would give other teams a better chance at out-bidding them for free agents.

            2. I just don't want to have to figure that crap out, it would diminish my enjoyment of the game.

That's pretty much my feelings as it relates to the NBA. I like the NBA okay, but I find the cap stuff a real hurdle to caring about the offseason.

    1. Subtle. They could have at least switched over sometime earlier than the moment before the report was released.

    2. I had control over the televisions at the union at GW. The default was always CNN, but I was given leeway to change it during major sporting events, etc. I remember having to turn OFF the Redskins game a few times because the employees in the food court were working at a glacial pace while watching.

  2. So the Freeh Report confirms what we all knew: Paterno was more concerned about the image of his football team than the safety and welfare of little boys.

Man, Joe Pos' book on Joe Pa is going to be a fascinating read. I have no doubt Posnanski was going to write a hagiography about Paterno but no way can he do that now. Question is, is Posnanski able to go to those dark places? Let's face it, besides being a terrific writer, Pos' niche is the happy stories and looking at the positive side (thus, this week's blog on Kansas City). Obviously the story has changed radically from the one he thought he had. Can he pull it off? I for one will be extremely interested in finding out.

    1. It could be good to see someone write the story who isn't interested primarily in making the story as sensational as possible.

      1. Good point. I suppose we will get some quicky books that will go for the lurid. I won't be reading those.

    2. hmmm.

I dedicated myself to write the most honest book I could about Joe Paterno. Everything I have to say about his life is in it.— Joe Posnanski (@JPosnanski) July 12, 2012

      1. As in "Seriously, stop asking me my thoughts on this stuff until I get them organized in book form!"

  3. I'm looking for someone to pinch hit for next Monday's game log. I'll be on vacation in Chicago and won't have the time nor the inclination. Let me know if anybody can pick that up for me. Thanks!

  4. Does anyone have any experience with the seats in the Legends Club? J & I are planning on going to a game at the end of the month, and LC tickets are fairly reasonable. I'm a fatass, and J has long legs, so I'm wondering if the seats there are more comfortable (wider seats, more legroom is what I'm hoping for) than those elsewhere? We sat in section 221 at a game in 2010 and it wasn't terribly accomodating.

    1. Yes, the Legends Club seats are more awesome than other seats. There seemed to be plenty of room and they are padded. Plus, the club has its own concourse, so its not packed full of people. If the prices are reasonable, you owe it to yourself to get them.

    2. The Legends Club seats are nice. Plus, fewer rows and smaller rows mean less time with people in your way.

I might end up having an extra ticket in the LC on Saturday. If so, is anyone interested?

        1. I will let you know. My wife offered the last ticket to a friend of hers. Plus, still waiting to hear from the sitter. I could have 2 tickets available if the sitter falls through.

    1. You are correct. They have 72 hours to decide, but those are now the only two options. From what I understand, Portland turned down two draft picks and some player, though I don't think it was ever reported who. Based on that, the feeling is that they have to sign or it will make their GM look dumber than Kahn.

      1. It sure seems like an odd situation to me. It seems silly to spend so much money on a guy who isn't a star, but I guess if you think he's the last piece of the puzzle, there is some marginal revenue to consider in terms of being competitive and making the playoffs. The picks surely must have been pretty attractive, though, if for no other reason than you could use them to deal for a different known quantity who hasn't said he'd rather play elsewhere.

        1. The story I'm hearing is that the Wolves haven't submitted the paperwork yet and are still trying to get Portland to agree to a sign and trade deal until the end of the day.

          1. I have now seen that, too. There are also some out there who believe (based mainly on reports that Wolves are turning their attention to Courtney Lee) that Batum might not actually sign the sheet and instead take the QO and tell Portland to shove it because he wouldn't want them to match. I find that scenario unlikely, but it would be dramatic.

      2. that's weird. I thought that sign-and-trades were still possible after an offer sheet has been signed, and that the signature was just another part of the bargaining process. But I guess that sign-and-trades only really apply to unrestricted FAs.

    1. I make more money than 90% of people in colonial US!

      What do you mean, "inflation"???

      1. Also, population growth, and the relative simplicity of buying digital singles:
"Oh, this will cost me $1 (2012) and I can have it right now and listen to it anywhere?"
vs. "I'll drive to the record store and drop $3 (1970) and be able to play it once I get home so long as my kid brother hasn't taken all those insert-things that go in my 45s so my record player will play them."

    1. fake fake fake.

sorry, i'm sick of people posting this only because it would be totally awesome if it were true (if you don't believe me, google the number that's posted).

      1. Heh, that makes it even funnier. From everything I've read, the Westboro Church has a pretty good sense of humor (seriously).

          1. Their message is horrible and despicable, but that doesn't mean that they don't have a sense of humor. They're just trolling for the sake of trolling.

              1. From what I have read, yes. It's misguided and bizarre and incredibly hurtful, but their ultimate goal seems to be to protect the First Amendment.

  5. Nice fluff piece on Attebury in the latest Vita.mn.

During an interview for another major-league job, Atteberry says he was accused of being too smart for the gig due to his voluminous vocabulary...

    1. I am bummed to realize that a "safety" is just a synonym for a hit.
I was under the apparently false belief where it was reaching base safely, regardless of whether due to a hit, base on balls, hit by pitch, or catcher's interference. (And still excluding fielder's choices, and fielding errors.) That would actually be a useful alternate term if it means something subtly but importantly different than "hit".

I say we make the neglected word mean just that. Will anyone join me in redefining "Safety" as any one of the elements in the numerator of OBP?

      Let it be that
      AVG = Hits/At-Bats
      OBP = Safeties/Plate-Appearances

        1. Wait, my default batter when I picture these things is Brandon Inge. I assume that he'd barely feel it.
