  1. Kevin Love and crew play at 8:30 this morning

this womens bicycle race is crazy because of the rain

  2. Well, the wife and kids are heading off to Maryland to visit some friends. leaving me all alone to man the fort. I tell ya, it's weird to not have them around. I've done a business trip here and there where I've been away for a couple days, but it's always been me (sometimes my wife) going. I've never been at home with them gone for this long a time (about 7-10 days).

Luckily I'll be filling my time with a trip to Minnesota (finally!) and another trip to St. Louis. Oh, and video games... lots and lots of video games.

  3. So, I was awoken to the news that Skim was stung by a scorpion and is having trouble breathing. She and The Milkmaid are off at the hospital now.

    ---

And here as I'm about to write about how tense I am, I get the call that she's going to be fine, but she'll be miserable for a while as she metabolizes the venom.

    Siiiiiiiiigh.

    1. glad to hear she's gonna be fine, spoons. Maybe you should write a children's story about friendly scorpions.

    2. Glad it wasn't more serious. Time to get out the blacklight and go bug arachnid-hunting, spoons.

    3. I was camping in Colorado once and my friend got stung by one that crawled into his shoe overnight. His foot swelled up pretty good but no serious adverse effects. Of course he was older and bigger than your daughter, but it did hobble him for a few days. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to her.

      1. I went and saw her an hour ago...she was confused and has no control over her muscles. It was kind of like trying to talk to a drug addict. It wasn't fun to see. They're on the way home now, and we can expect another six hours of the slurred speech (from the drugs) and the weird muscle and eye movements (venom).

Apparently, the only people truly at risk are the very old and very young. Others usually don't even have to go to the hospital.

        1. When I was about nine I was in the woods and found this thing that looked like a basketball on the ground. I smashed it with a stick and about a thousand angry hornets came flying out. I got stung a couple dozen times. This happened at a friend's birthday party so several others got stung, too, but nothing like me. After thing calmed a bit the others went back out to play but ingot really lethargic and confused, very similar symptoms to your girl. They got me to the doctor who said I was in anaphylactic shock. He gave me an adrenalin shot and made me take some pills, but I was prett much out of it for the rest of the day.

          1. I had a similar experience - symptom and "enemy"-wise - when I was young. I was only stung three times, but they were all within half an inch of one another on my forehead. As a result, my family remembers this incident a lot better than I do.

  4. So tired of people spewing vitriol over this trade already. If we felt TR was a genius before, why do we feel he got hosed this time? It could be the market for pitchers with 5+ eras just isn't that great.

    1. is part of the vitriol coming from the fact Liriano was traded to the stupid White Sox?

    2. Trading Frankie to the White Sox is GENIUS.

with the change in FA compensation, getting value out of rentable players, particularly ones with big question marks, is gonna be really hard.

      1. Yeah, good point. With the new rules, I don't believe the Twins were going to get a compensatory pick for losing a pitcher with Frankie's stats this year, so getting two Triple A/Quad A guys isn't a bad return.

        1. There are no rankings this year. You have to offer the player a one-year contract for a certain amount, which I think in Liriano's case would be close to $13M, so no thanks.

        2. The Twins would get the pick if Liriano turned it down and then it would only be one draft pick.

    3. We traded AJ Pierzynski are all we got were Eduardo Escobar and Pedro Hernandez. Fire Bill Smith!1!!11!!

      1. We traded Eric Milton for Carlos Silva and Nick Punto. Escobar sounds like a good comp for Punto and Hernandez has got a better ceiling than Silva, who was a one-pitch middle reliever at the time and the Twins turned him into a decent, cheap starter for a few years. I think this is a better return than we got for Milton. I think people just think Liriano pitched great for six weeks, so he's going to for the rest of the season, right? They forget so quickly how bad he was the first six weeks of the season.

  5. I just found and killed the scorpion that stung my daughter. It was maybe 1/10th the size of the one I saw last Halloween (when I mentioned this to the Milkmaid, she said that one may have been a show scorpion that got loose).

This one was maybe an inch and a half long. Fast little bitch. God, I've never been so relieved.

    1. I would freak out if I ever saw a scorpion. Im not a fan of anything in the Arachnid animal class.

      1. I would have thought the same of myself, but the first thing I thought when I saw my first one (last Halloween) was "protect the girls." I scooped them up, threw them onto the bed and then dealt with the scorpion fearlessly. If I'd been alone, I suppose it may have been different.

  6. From the Guardian's MBM of the GBR-UAE match

"Am at the GB v UAE match and there's a serious problem with visa," confirms Neil Marshall. "All the cash machines are turned off as they accept non visa cards, and the visa only card payment system has crashed. There's a lot of frustrated people here with no money and no food for two football matches. No one wants to do anything here. Very annoying, lots hungry and thirsty people here."

I don't know why this surprised me, but the fact that the Olympics set up their own Visa-only ATM network is insane. LIke someone said on Twitter last night, NBC didn't pay billions to bring the Olympics to you, they paid billions to bring P&G, Visa, McDonald's, Coke et al to you.

    1. That would have been great to see, but between NBC and my cable provider, I can't get online to watch it. I'm getting seriously fucking annoyed.

      1. If you're willing to pay about $15 and have some familiarity with SSH, I'm about 99% sure it's trivial to trick the BBC into thinking you're local.

  7. The Moscow Timberwolves are looking pretty terrific today. AK-47 14/17 from the floor for 35 points and Shved has 16 points, 11 assists, and 7 boards with about 2 minutes left.

        1. I wonder if maybe he was calling for the alley-oop? The bounce pass was a nice delivery, however. I am a fan of the bounce pass to bigs on the move.

  8. Rigthhander Alex Wimmers tried to pitch recently while with the rookie team but Terry Ryan just said, "it didn't go well." Wimmers is headed for another MRI.

Who didn't see this coming, other than the Twins?

      1. No, they were trying rest and rehab first, thereby knocking out this season and next when finally does get the knife. Oy vey.

    1. I'm not entirely up on all the hockey rules*, but it is a bit entertaining to watch.

*Can't touch your feet or body ever? C'mon.

  9. so, does one watch the tape delayed Olympic coverage or the BoSox/Yanks game on ESPN?

    1. flipped over to the 4ltr during a commercial break. I am shocked that the game is in the 7th inning and the game is only 2 hours long.
