  1. Well, I found no evidence of mice last night and the hardwired power supply to the furnace controller and smoke detector mysteriously started working again, so that's good.

      1. Fortunately, no spooky ghosts up there that I could see, either.

  2. Two brothers-in-law in the City, with their respective families. I'm thinking good thoughts.

  3. It is creepily nice here right now after yesterday. I understand I'm inland and on the edge of the predicted path, but to wake up to no rain whatsoever after yesterday is weird. I was expecting a petering out.

  4. DK, you're going to the Rural Alberta Advantage/Dan Mangam concert tonight, right? Sheenie and I will be there, so I hope we can connect.

    1. Sadly, I'm not; it sold out much faster than I thought it would. I think I recall saying I needed to remember to get a ticket when I saw you this summer. I forgot again for a while after that and they were out by the time I did check. So I guess we'll be 0 for 2 on these shows; hopefully whatever the third chance is will work out better.

  5. Oy. My unused twitter account was hacked and someone tweeted spam for weightloss pills. Hilarious.

  6. Holy cow - this picture from the NYTimes is pretty crazy.

In Breezy Point on the Rockaways in Queens, at least 50 tightly-packed homes in the beach community were destroyed overnight.

  7. FFWD to the 3 minute mark for the explosion that knocked out power below Midtown.

Bit of a let down if you watch all 3 minutes before it...

    1. Yeah, I'm going to disagree with you about the let down portion... that was one hell of a light show.

      1. Depending on the Canadian station I will be able to teach you how to get the signal.

  8. My daughter is collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald house. Anyone interested in helping, especially by putting up a container at your place of work? I can provide a personalized note from her to help. If you are from out of town, I will certainly pay shipping to get pop tops to the World Headquarters. This is a full school year project. We'd like to get 200,000 tabs.

    1. Let me take this opportunity to highly recommend helping out with this project, or at least collecting the pop tabs yourself. A little less than a year ago, my daughter had surgery for a tethered spinal cord. At about the same time, my nephew was in the hospital for, among other issues, being born with only half a heart. The Ronald McDonald house was an unbelievable support for our family. We will be hosting a meal there next month to celebrate my nephew's birthday. The ability to stay close to your hospitalized child, to get a home-cooked meal, to have a comfortable place to take a little rest or welcome visitors... these things are more valuable than I can begin to express.

Needless to say, the Philosofer household already collects pop tabs. Bravo to SBG daughter for her work here.

    2. I'm in. My office consumes about 100-150 cans of soda, fizzy water or juice a day. A personalized note from the little miss would be appreciated...and likely effective.

      1. (This goes for everyone:) Send me a gmail at stickandballguy with contact information and I will hook you up with a personalized note. I will be back at World Headquarters tomorrow and I'll put together a picture of her with little collection container, a note about the project and have her add some language at the end.

            1. I would prefer that they come this way. I want her to work on this project and see what can happen if she makes a difference (i.e., this is a teachable moment). I will pay for the shipping.

    3. not sure how much I can help. We don't drink pop at home and our work vending machines are all bottles.

  9. Hey, do I get any sort of recognition for my winning brackef on the site somewhere? Is there a tab across the top to track the winners of all the fantasy leagues that I'm completely missing? I want bragging rights for the one time I actually can claim them!

    1. There is a WGOM Achievements category at the top, if you click on that it shows the chart with DK all over the place. Looks like the 2012 Brackef slot is still waiting to be updated.

      1. True story: when I was in law school, the school cafeteria would sell tacos weekly. The sign said taco meat, lettuce, cheese, etc. I was in law school, after all, so I figured that "taco meat" seemed a little fishy. I asked the cook exactly what kind of meat was in the taco meat. The answer was turkey. I kind of figured that was better for me anyway, so I continued to eat them.

        1. True story:

I took my family to a little town in NE Nebraska to visit my grandmother back in the late 1990s. After visiting her at the nursing home, we went in search of recognizable food. There was a "mexican" food place in a little strip mall.

I went to order a burrito. The menu on the wall said "meat burrito". I asked the pimple-faced kid behind the counter, "what kind of meat?"

The PFK responded, with a grunt, "uhh, meat meat."

          Well, that cleared that up.

  10. Rick Adelman is awesome

    Alex Conover ‏@alex_cono
Coach Adelman, when asked if he will watch tonight's NBA games: "I don't know, it's Tuesday, NCIS is on." #twolves

    1. The last Star Wars movie release was 2005's Revenge of the Sith – and we believe there's substantial pent up demand. In 2015, we're planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the "Disney-Lucasfilm" brand. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years. We're very happy that George Lucas will be creative consultant on our new Star Wars films and that Kathleen Kennedy, the current Co-Chair of Lucasfilm, will executive produce. George handpicked Kathy earlier this year to lead Lucasfilm into the future. She'll join Disney as President of Lucasfilm, reporting into Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and integrating and building the Star Wars franchise across our company.

      Emphasis mine.

That.. will be a lot of movies.

      1. Yeah, it certainly will. I wonder if they plan on them being Episode 10, etc. etc. ad infinitum, or if they'll do side stories or something.

I guess with Lucas not directing they can't be much worse. I'll probably give it a shot. With Episode VII and Avengers 2 in 2015, Disney is going to be stacking plenty of paper.

        1. There are already tons of stories in other media, especially television. I think some of those will be converted to movies. Plus, there are a lot of Expanded Universe stories they could use. Lucas might not want to make them canon, but I doubt Disney will care.

        1. Can I ignore Star Wars movies any more than I already have? I saw the first one in the theater back in 1977 or something. The other five are still on my list of movies I'll never see.

        1. The Fett And The Hound?

A cameo in Cinderella? "Bippity Boba-y boop!"?

Or will he "bounty" hunt Bambi's mother?

The possibilities (and films!) are endless!

      2. Disney plans to produce boatloads of sequels? Shocking. Have they ever made a movie without a sequel?

        1. As far as I can tell, the following Disney feature animated films are not sequels and do not have sequels or prequels or any type of quel.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (though Walt D. himself had been working on a sequel)
          Pinocchio
Dumbo (as Dumbo II was canned)
Sleeping Beauty (though live-action version coming)Alice in Wonderland
The Aristocats (Aristocats II was canned)
          Robin Hood
          Home on the Range
          Tangled (give it time)

        1. I tweeted this but my hope is a total Star Wars reboot with JGL as Luke, Redman as Han Solo, and Mila Kunis as Princess Leia. Darth Vader would be Andy Serkis in total motion capture CGI.

          1. I think they'd go Synergy and have Leia's role played by an actress from a Disney Channel programme with a Radio-Disney singing career hopefully leading to crossover with the primary pop market.

And isn't Redman a bit too "edgy" for Disney?
If it must be a rapper, how about Common?

            1. When you said rapper, Common was my first thought too or perhaps Mos Def. Bow Wow could play a young Lando?

    1. "Yup, that is an eye. Just like the one on the other side, far as I can tell."

  11. After all of Sandy, no damage/power outagery, some branches on the yard, appropriate amount of angst, and relief we are not being flooded like those CTers on the coast.

A weather machine/election ploy to pull people away from voting? Whatever.

    1. When Shaq was tweeking DH12 in the off=season, maybe it was because he knew that he was a better free throw shooter. Howard last night from the line: 3-14.

    1. To a depleted and not very good when at full strength Mavs team. That's a pretty bad loss. It's early, but a Laker implosion could convince The Fickle One to go elsewhere and the Lakers will have ended up trading their only young star for a hill of not so magical beans /agirlcandream
