November 1, 2012: Sweet Tooth

How was your haul this year? Between the two parties, trick or treating and the fact that very few kids stuck around to trick or treat at our house, I expect to gain a few pounds between now and December.

  1. My plan today is to get caught up on the fall/winter games that I missed while I was away. I'm aware that few if any people will be interested in games that are two or three days old, but I like to be complete. Thank you for your indulgence.

          1. I don't know. I assume there are some Twins in the Australian League, because there usually are, but I don't know who they might be. We'll start finding out tomorrow!

  2. Reusse:

I used to be a hardcore fan of college basketball. I find watching most games to be a chore these days. A contest of well-matched NBA teams, with its outstanding mix of talents, far surpasses what can be found most of the time in a major college arena.

It's a league with the amazing LeBron James, the spectacular tandems of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, and Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, the all-timer Kobe Bryant, and the new kids from Kentucky ... and, oh yeah, Charles Barkley on TNT.

I might have made this very same point a couple of times.

    1. You may have, although your point probably included Love and Rubio and not Bryan or Griffin.

        1. One thing about Steve Nash is that he needs the ball in his hands. Nash is a pick and roll maestro. Kobe needs the ball because he's Kobe. Can they co-exist?

        1. I'm not a huge basketball guy. I really only watched semi-regularly last year but good lord do I hate Blake Griffin's game.

  3. Now that I am home, Miss SBG and I will be making homemade posters for her Ronald McDonald pop top campaign. Four citizens have volunteered to help her with her project so far. If you are interested in helping, send me a gmail at stickandballguy.

        1. You know that if you pinch your nose and blindfold yourself you can't tell the difference between "grape" and any other flavor, right?

    1. We started getting low, so I had to run to the store quick and get some reinforcements while the Mrs. held down the fort.

      1. It started dumping rain in the middle of prime TorT time here. Numbers were definitely down.

    2. Our trick-or-treaters that weren't relatives or close friends were a pair of 13 year olds that came with lame masks, boredly said "hi", and held out their bags.

So, really, it was the most trick or treat action we've seen since we moved in 5 years ago.

      1. I saw way too many too old kids walking around without even a frickin costume, but carrying bags for candy. Fortunately, none of them stopped by my house while I was there.

        1. We had a few of those - I give them whoppers and a snarky comment. Other than that, our neighborhood is a TorT heaven so I go through about 3 bags an hour...had to shut the lights off at 7:40 because we ran out and had been through 5 bags.

        2. I went ToTing my Senior year of HS. Had just turned 18. People gave us like one smarty or Sweet tart, but we must have hit 33% of New Ulm below the bluffs but above Goosetown. Whenever anyone said "Aren't you too old for this?" (which was most houses), our stock line was "You're never too old for the spirit of Halloween!" (which I still think is funny), while my co-conspirators peppered in multiple "Should we be out drinking instead?"s.

    3. Don't know why but ToTs were way low in our neighborhood this year vs. last. Wasn't very cold.

HPR was whining about his foot being sore* and then had to go to the bathroom, so I sent him home and told him to stay there. CER and AJR and I went up another street, one which has a little spur. Only one house on that spur had a light on. As we walked up the driveway, they started cheering for us. They threw like three double-fist handfuls of candy into each girls' bag.

*I assume Plantar Fasciitis, which I've never heard of.

      1. We had a lot of ToTers and Miss SBG was a monster, getting to all of the 90 houses in our sub-development that participated.

      2. it was a bit cool here (I had wanted to sit outside, but gave in after 10 minutes) and our count was ~50, roughly half what we usually get. Still, one large band ToTed by on the other side of the street and then WALKED BACK ON THE SAME SIDE -- what's up with that? And another never returned from the cul-de-sac on our side before I gave up and killed the lights, so we could have had another 15-20 more. /moreforme

    4. We had very low Trick or Treat turnout last night, probably less than a dozen kids total. Our neighborhood is growing up.

      1. Around Alexandria, there are very few actual trick or treaters anymore (almost everyone opts for community events and whatnot), and in the more remote areas, there are nearly none (except friends and relatives, who bring the younguns by to show you their infant dressed as a giraffe).

        1. We got nailed. They were late to show up, but they did, in vast numbers. NBB and W were at task for 1.5 hrs, and finally shut down the station having run out of stuff.

The older boys with no costume and a pillow cover - man.

    1. I can dig it. I fear that NBP-type stressbreakers could lead to a "Keep Chopping Wood"-type failure.

    2. Only a three-year contract, so he and Ozzie will be co-current terms as Manager and Manager-in-exile.

  4. Hopefully this isn't too forbidden topic-y (as I'm not trying to comment on the substance...), but a guy I went to law school with (and knew well enough to have him regularly in my facebook feed) is running for office in NY, and got endorsed by a former president today. That's pretty neat.

  5. I didn't buy any candy this year (we live in a mother-in-law apartment), and I haven't gotten any candy for myself. I did go to the gym last night. Now get off my lawn!

      1. Also like him a lot. There's a lot of pitchers out there I like. Some I'd be willing to give more money to than others. But I think getting buy-low candidate (or two) like McCarthy, Marcum, or even Haren would be a very, very smart move. It's a very Terry Ryan move, but I also hope they sign someone who seems certain to contribute in addition.

    1. I'm guessing it's because the article is focusing on Opening Day starters. I'd say unless Gibson is an absolute stud in Spring Training, there's no way he starts the season with the big club.

Love the idea of them going after Sanchez. I'm hoping he doesn't make a deal with the Tigers before the exclusivity period is up.

  6. when Kevin Love (269) plays his first game this year, he will tie Mark Madsen (270) for 10th place on Wolves 'Games played' list. If Love stays healthy the rest of the season, he could finish 6th on the list. Dean Garrett (272), Christian Laettner (276), Trenton Hassell, Rasho Nesterovic (316)

I didnt realize Dean Garrett played so many games for the Wolves, but turns out he was a Timberpuppy for 4 seasons.

        1. The darkest moment in franchise history? There's a lot to choose from, but that was absolutely disgraceful.
