November 9, 2012: Sleepless

I've gotten myself into this stupid cycle where I stayed up real late one night and now I can't fall asleep until about 1 or 2am. I'm amazed at my ability to form near-unbreakable habits after I do something once.

  1. on last nights episode of Parks and Recreation

    Spoiler SelectShow
  2. It has been suggested to me by a friend that Scott Baker, Francisco Liriano and Kyle Lohse are all free agents. And Matt Garza is available via trade...

I said I'd take it over last year. Of course, I'd probably take Joe Mays and Carlos Silva as they are now over last year's rotation too.

    1. I read a hot-stove preview that predicted Scott Baker to the Padres.
Scott Baker is perfect to pitch in that ballpark and that ballpark is perfect for pitching from Scott Baker.
You mean fewer fly balls are homeruns there?
They'll just need a swing starter for those Colorado games.
I could see him in the ASG and with downballot CYA votes in that ballpark.
(Assuming that he's exactly the same as before he got hurt.)

    2. The devil is in the contracts. You couldn't pick all of them up without committing to multi-year deals, some of which would look pretty ugly on the back end.

  3. Computer related question for those who take care of such things.

Our laptop security and retrieval firm is going out of business. Are there any products that any of your places of work use to keep track of laptops and hunt them down if they get stolen?

LoJack has been brought up, as have a couple of others, I'm just trying to get a decent variety to make a recommendation based off of.

    1. I have Prey installed on my personal laptop. I've never had to use it, but their blog shows a lot of successful retrievals. It looks like they have something called PreyPro for large numbers of devices.

        1. That would be the greatest thing ever. I wonder if the Lakers have diet Pepsi available at their practice facility.

  4. My brother has been out in brianS's neck of the woods since April building wind towers. He completed the job yesterday and is heading home. My dad flew out there on Wednesday to ride home with him (and do some of the driving). Yesterday, driving through the mountains in CA, they got hit by a doofus who was overdriving the conditions (it was snowing). My brother's camper sustained some minor damage, but it is still moveable down the road. This is the third time that that camper has been hit on a drive home from a jobsite. As of right now, they are driving through the mountains in Utah. It's tough sledding. Dad said he drove through SLC and it was snowing so hard he couldn't see anything of the city. My brother figures that they have about 60 more miles to go before they drive out of the snow.

      1. Dad and Bro made it through the mountains. Talked to them about 2 1/2 hours ago, they were in Laramie, WY.

  5. I just walked out of my apartment to go run an errand with Sour Cream, and there were police out there armed with assault rifles. They asked me where building six was, and I let them know. I decided to hold off on the errands idea for a few minutes.

      1. I probably would have been fine if there had been a slapstick feel, but this seemed awfully serious. I've never seen cops, in real life, so wound up and nervous. I know it happens, but I haven't seen it.

It must have gone well. The police car drove by me ten minutes ago with someone in the back, and the police in the car seemed relaxed. All the other cars drove away. I thought I had maybe heard a single pistol shot a few nights ago, and now, I'd just about guarantee it.

    1. That reminds me of the time I was in college getting money from an ATM at a bank next to the Burger King in town. A car pulled in to the lot and slowly circled around before heading back towards the exit. All of a sudden, as he slammed the gas to pull back into the street, about 5 police vehicles came from all directions, with the first one there slamming into the guy's car, pushing him into the curb. The other vehicles formed a circle, jumped out behind their doors, guns drawn. No shots were fired, but man was that nuts.

      1. Back when I lived in D.C. in the 80s,the bus I was riding turned the corner right in front of a shootout between cops and bad guys. Bus Driver told us all to get down immediately. The latin american women next to me started crying as we heard shots. The bus guy said all clear as we drove by the cops checking out the dude they just shot.

  6. So I did the ESPN poll "Should the Lakers have fired Mike Brown." I was intrigued by the results.

California overwhelming said yes. Also saying yes were Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and New Mexico. The rest of the country said no. The rest of the world also says yes. I'm guessing Mr. Brown is well-disliked and all the country's Laker fans are on the west side?

    1. My thought, after laughing at the Lakers for firing their coach 5 games into a season, is that whether it was a good decision depends entirely on who they bring in to replace Brown. He seems like a very competent coach, but not the sort of coach that will really make a team a lot better. But firing a coach 5 games into a season shows poor judgement on the part of the front office more than it says anything about the coach.

  7. Budweiser must have been jealous of the lines at the Surly stand

    Dave St. Peter ‏@TwinsPrez
Good to be in St. Louis today meeting with long-time @Twins @MLB partner Anheuser-Bush InBev. Big plans for '13 and beyond.#ThisBudsForYou

    1. They are worried enough about craft beer to have a significant equity investment in the Craft Brewers Alliance (Redhook, Widmer, Kona).

    2. This bud's not for me. If the Twins crowd out local breweries to placate the behemoth, they should be roundly criticizing for sucking.

      1. co-sign

say what you will about the relations with Surly and various retailers (as discussed here before), they put out great products. And there now is a thriving craft brewing industry in Minnesota. It deserves SOME vending space at the Bullseye.

    3. I have heard 3 really bad stories about St Peter from 2 different sources. I have no faith in that guy.
