November 21, 2012: Migraine

I don't know where the cutoff is for "migraine" and "garden variety headache," but I think I crossed over into the former yesterday. I can't move my neck without wincing.

  1. I've had migraines twice.
The first time was during high school and I puked and stayed home (from the pain, not the puke).
The second time was brief maybe six years ago, I had some visual effects before the pain. I was at work and I couldn't read the screen, words kept slipping around each other.

When the first hit, the acuity and manner of the sensation was so different from a regular headache that it was immediately obvious to me it was a migraine. Slight head moves felt like when you hit your head on something very hard, like a floor or concrete wall, only without the pain of the blow, just the dizzying ringing.

I know nothing about migraines other than my own experience, but that experience tells me that if you have to ask whether its a migraine, it isn't. This is not to diminish the pain that your completely horrible other headache is giving you. Get well soon, Spoonman.

    1. Played this for HPR and CER this weekend. They thought it was "Spoonhead". Overall, they were underimpressed. HPR prefers Badmotorfinger, I think. He loves the "rock-out guitars".

          1. as with many soundgarden songs, that was another example of, "ooo, i want to learn how to play this! wait, no, i'm not tuning my guitar to E-E-B-B-B-B."

      1. My first exposure to Soundgarden was Black Hole Sun. I really did not care for it - probably not their fault, it was just omnipresent the summer of '94. But I very clearly remember the first time I heard Spoonman and loving it and I eventually became a big fan.

        1. I bought Superunknown the day it came out and loooooved Black Hole Sun. A few months later when it was released as a single and became everyone's favorite depressing song, it lost something for me.

          1. A classmate who had his license drove to 'Kato that day and got me a copy, so I got it on Weds at school and didn't get to listen until Weds night.

    2. A few years back I was getting severe headaches following physical exertion -- they'd start at the top of my neck and eventually wind up above the eyes. Turns out they were vascular in nature, and a low dose blood pressure medicine is doing the trick. I really feel for people who get frequent migraines.

    3. I had what I guess was a migraine a few years ago. My boss gave me an Excedrin Migraine and I woke up naked in the woods surrounded by wolves it knocked that thing out in about 45 minutes.

    4. jane gets bad migraines semi-frequently, including auras. when it happens, she just kind of has to shut down. we haven't isolated any specific triggers, so it's just something to slog through right now.

i, on the other hand, never get headaches, let alone migraines (*knock knock*). i always do whatever i can to help, but it's pretty frustrating since there's almost nothing i can really do. on the flip side, it's frustrating for her for obvious reasons, and also because i have no frame of reference so i can't really understand what she's going through.

      blarg.

      1. I have gotten headaches, primarily I think from sleeping in a position that makes my neck hurt. I know it when I get up in the morning. A couple of aspirin or tylenol usually relieves the symptoms in about a half hour to an hour.

I will note that I have not had one of these headaches since I started my weight loss program, so it's possible that increased activity has helped me avoid them.

  2. DiMatteo out at Chelsea, Rafa most likely in. Losing 3-0 to Juve yesterday wasn't good, and losing 2-1 to West Brom at the weekend wasn't good either, but I didn't expect him to be sacked just yet. There is no one in sport I'd want to work for less than Abramovich (Loria included).

    1. Un-freaking-believable. It's been a November to forget for Chelsea but my Lord. What's Arsenal up to these days? I may have to take a break.

  3. I get migraines very sporadically. They settle in behind my eyes, like Rhu_Ru, but not necessarily after exertion, just whenever. They get to the point I can't move my eyes side-to-side. The only thing to do is sleep them off. Luckily, I can usually feel them creeping up on me so I can take a handful of aspirin and get into comfy clothes before they slam me. Sometimes, I'm even asleep before they get too bad. That's when I feel extra lucky.

  4. I don't get migraines, but I do get sinus headaches. I had had only one or two in my life until a couple years ago, and now I seem to get them whenever we get a drastic weather change or when it gets extremely dry (which happens a lot this time of year due to Santa Ana winds). I've learned to control and even prevent them with nasal saline sprays, but I do keep nasal decongestants around for when it gets bad. When that happens, my forehead feels like it is going to explode. Fortunately, decongestants will usually work pretty quickly and knock it out completely, unless I have a cold or flu. I once had one on an airplane flight. That was the worst. Fortunately, my wife keeps decongestants with her. I remember actually checking my forehead and my nose for blood until the decongestant kicked in.

    1. I get about two sinus headaches a year, but they absolutely knock me to the floor when I get them. Taking a nap for an hour or two face down in a heat pad seems to be the only thing that relieves anything. When they come, my let eye feels like it's going to be popped out of my skull.

Considering that a migraine is worse, I cannot imagine how miserable a migraine is.

      1. Mine are like these...never had a migraine but the sinus headaches which cause your teeth to ache are awful. My wife used to suffer from fairly frequent migraines. Prescribed medication was the only thing that worked to quell the symptoms. Hasn't had one since her pregnancy. Something to do with hormones but I don't know much about women so I couldn't say for sure.

  5. I know the 5 days off the for Timberwolves was good for the health of the team (Pek! is back tonight), but I miss the condensed schedule of last year where it was a game every other night.

      1. The Wolves have had a bad habit of playing on the rare nights I close. Then I get a bunch of opening shifts and they take five days off. Oh well. I'll see tonight's tilt.

    1. it bogus to put the Replacement Refs on that list, when it should Roger Goddell for allowing that situation to happen.

      1. That's tomorrow! That will be interesting. My prediction is that coach Jerry Kill will win, although if he wants to go off the local board, Gary Bettman would be a good choice. But, Patrick doesn't care much about hockey.

  6. Patrick discusses the ToTY pick. Zygi won last year, so a second consecutive win would be unprecedented. I think Country Jerry and his backing out on North Carolina games, player relations, and the return to sub-mediocrity will carry the day.

  7. I'm back for a little while, then will be gone again. I'll just say that, while I understand it beats the alternative, watching your parents get old is not much fun.

    1. I hear you, Padre.

My parents will be out here for January and February. Trial run at getting them to Cali for winters, transitioning out of cabin living. Better a year or two too early than a year too late, since the year-too-late could very well mean there aren't any more years.

  8. YES
