December 1, Christmas Spirit

They have this thing called "Glendale Glitter" out here - hayride, lights, living Nativity, that kind of thing. The Milkmaid, Milklings and I did it last night, but man, is it tough to feel Christmassy when you barely need a hoodie.

  1. For those interested - Wolves beat the Bucks 95-85 last night...went to the four-letter to find the score and there was this at the end of the recap:

Joel Przybilla had to shoot the free throws for [Udrih] and went 0 for 2, much to the delight of a home crowd that has booed him ever since he left the University of Minnesota early 13 years ago.

    1. I was the game yesterday and Przybilla's appearance was hilarious. First, he comes in and clanks two free throws. Then, he committed a foul attempting to rebound his missed free throw. He played for two seconds, but they were remarkably inept.

(No, I didn't boo. Why bother?)

      1. I don't understand that guy. He should be a significant rotation guy in the league, no? Has he gotten that slow? Or is he just basketball-dumb?

        1. I haven't mowed the lawn since July. That kind of bums me out, too, since mowing the lawn is one of those household chores that I actually sort of enjoy.

        2. I was going to, but it still is too wet out there. Certainly warm enough. This time of the year, I only mow one or twice a month.

    1. Watching Jerry Kill makes me realize how fortunate I have been. I had seizures throughout high school (I would guess I probably had at least fifty) and they occurred at all times (during a soccer game, while I was driving, in class, etc.). However, my seizures at first only affected my throat and made me basically gasp for air and water. We couldn't figure out a) what they were, and b) how to treat them as I underwent a whole bunch of tests.

Finally, I had a grand mal in my sleep during my sophomore year of college. At that point, it was obvious that I was suffering from seizures and not a digestive condition. I was on meds for several years, but slowly phased off and have amazingly now been seizure-free for about a decade. In fact, it is basically completely off my radar except for every few years when I get a letter from the DMV requiring a doctor's affidavit that I have been healthy and should not have my license suspended.

I have no idea why I was so fortunate to have such a light form of epilepsy that it was basically completely treatable, but I can't imagine the confusion and frustration that comes with having it much worse like Coach Kill. I also can't quite figure out how Sheenie and I could both have such completely goofy brains.

  2. Twins offer arb to Burton, Duensing and Butera. (Yeah!, yeah and ugh).

So the Twins had to weigh Butera's offensive and defensive skills and decided it was worth bringing him back next season. He made $480,000 last season and is expected to be getting a slight raise via arbitration.

        1. I wonder what Butera would have to do to lose his job, since three consecutive years of batting below .200 didn't do it.

          1. I was wondering this as well. I really don't understand it. I'm fine with tendering Duensing if Gardenhire makes a pinky promise to never let him start.

  3. Off to see Macklemore for the fifth time in less than two calendar years. (My brother bumped into him at the Pizza Luce in Richfield with Brother Ali after his show last night.)

  4. The wife and I just got back from our gubmint+donations+high-priced-tickets indie/docudrama film theatre.

The film The Loneliest Planet, was about a young couple trekking across Georgia (not Atlanta, think -stan) guided by a chain-smoking local.

The plot is around a single gesture that occurs about half-way into the film (no spoiling here), and how the couple reacts to it through the rest of the film.

But when reel 2 was mounted, the projectionist couldn't get the film and the sound lined up correctly, so an (unusually) packed indie film theatre was sitting there, unable to make out any of what was being spoken. So after 5 minutes of garbled soundtrack, we bolted.

When I got back, I searched on the 'tubes to see if I could find out what happened. Turns out we missed very little, and the reviews I've read were very disappointed in the (lack of an) ending. 3.2 rating in the NBB scale of 0-14.

    1. 0-14? I respect the non-traditional scale (since all these things are transformable anyway)!

  5. Watching my Noles 'gainst Georgia Tech. Seriously, those G.T. fans dressed in tight yellow tops are, well, nihilists.

    1. Who is the Div II Patsy that Sconsin's gonna get its bowl ticket punched against?
      Nebraska-Lincoln? The Lopers?

    2. Looks like I picked the right night to skip an invitation to party with Papa Young and go to a concert. I told Sheenie earlier in the day that "Wisconsin will win by at least two touchdowns." Guess I underestimated Nebraska's defense.

      1. It was unbelievable. Wisconsin ran pretty much at will all night, and the secondary looked slow and unable to tackle. How many times did Wisconsin have to run that fly sweep before Nebraska decided it would be a good idea to maintain outside contain?

        1. On the bright side, I had an NBA game to switch to when the carnage was too much -- Kings at Clippers. That should be a good game, right?

Kings were down by 9 after one, 22 after two, 27 after three. It was like Bo Pelini was coaching the Kings.

          1. A little known fact my cousin (who is very in the know for all things Huskers) told me a few weeks ago: Pelini's buy-out is incredibly, comically low. Basically Dr. Tom would love to see another school hire him away.

            1. Is Dr. Tom still pulling all of the strings, even in retirement?

also, I am old enough to remember when Dr. Tom couldn't win the Big Game.

  6. So, Mauer is a former MVP, a three-time batting champ as a catcher, a five-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger winner, a three-time Gold Glove winner, is signed through 2018 with his hometown team and today just married his high school sweetheart. BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
