  1. 2013 is not getting off to a good start in the Wheatland Parish. The 20-year-old son of one of the coaches at Sully Buttes High School in Onida committed suicide yesterday morning. as did another student at the same college. I don't know the family in Onida very well, but obviously this is a terrible thing for both families, as well as a shock to both communities. Please keep the families in your prayers.

    1. Thanks to years of eating sourdough pancakes almost every morning while I was growing up, I can eat regular pancakes like potato chips.
It was one of my chores to add the flour and milk (whole milk from the bulk tank!) to the sourdough batch every night. Simple and good, though my mother never made bread out of it. I'm tempted to try it now.

    2. I had a sourdough starter for about 8-9 years. Sadly, some time after The Boy was born, I stopped feeding it, and it eventually died (or was otherwise disposed of by my industrious wife). Mmm, sourdough.

My specialty was baguette. I even have a special baguette pan (two long, perforated cradles attached in the middle). I haven't used it in probably ten years. Boo.

[oh, and my sourdough starter began with Mountain High yogurt, milk, and flour. It took almost a year before I could reliably make edible bread with it -- I guess I was more patient and persistent in those days]

    3. I've had mixed success with bread over the years. Now I live a block from a worldclass bakery so I probably won't be getting any better any time soon.

  2. Haven't been around much lately - family Christmases and all that - but just wanted to thank y'all for a great first year (or however long it's been since I actually first showed up here). I waited too long to join, worried I'd be viewed as an outsider. Instead, I've found a place where I feel like I belong. Here's to a great 2013! And a brighter future for the Twins, 'cause I feel like this place would be even better if they were...

  3. So:
Price at the pump in Minny over the holiday break: $2.99 in Hugo, MN.
Price at the pump today: $3.69 in West Hartford, CT.

Potential reasons for the 19% differential:
    A) CT gas is better than Minny's, car's go farther, air is cleaner, etc.
    B) It costs more to dispense gas here since we can't 'top off' at the pump.
    C) Former SNL-funny-guy-turned-gubmint is tough on big oil.
    D) Petroleum out East is A Family Affair.

    1. With the single exception of a 2-week period in early 2012, gas prices in Mankato have always been notably higher ($.05 - $.10) than in the Twin Cities. For the past few months it's been almost $.20 more expensive down here (this weekend it was back down to $.05).
