WGOM Fitness, 23 May 2013: … And Sometimes, It Isn’t

After talking smart yesterday, I succumb to some junk.

Last night, I was watching the Heat-Pacer game with my Dad and I was sitting at about 250 calories left for the day. I had some popcorn, then a 250 calorie burrito, and then, late at night when I should have gone to bed, I had a big bowl of ice cream. And then another. Weighed 212.9 this morning.

  1. I had a bad day yesterday (and lining up a bad one today – Big 10 baseball tourney at Target Field). But thankfully the hamburger and fries at the local joint were _very_ good. And the pizza the kids made last night was good as well. All this after hitting my low weight (this round) yesterday morning.

A challenging weekend with family upcoming. If I come out of it Tuesday within 1.5 lbs of where I started yesterday, I'll be pretty pleased.

  2. I went to the gym yesterday after work. I found out very quickly that while golfing 18 holes is nice, fun, and certainly not bad for a person, it is certainly no workout.

    1. Were you hauling your own clubs or using a cart? Because even 9 holes in the Iowa July heat will put a hurting on you if you are carrying your bag. I speak from experience.

Not that you're in Iowa, just that golfing can be a workout under some circumstances

    2. Hauling my own clubs with DPWY last summer, I couldn't make it the entire 18. It was also one of the hottest days of the year, and I'm an awful golfer.

      1. If you're not a regular golfer you're also working out some muscles that probably don't get used that often, so that makes it even worse.

        1. Mc's office had a company outing at the beginning of the month and she had never golfed before. She was so sore the next day.

        2. I suppose that could be it. Walking 18 holes hauling my clubs doesn't do anything for me, but working out for five minutes? That was something else.

          1. Golf is great for calorie burn. If you walk 18 holes you're using at least 1000 calories.

      2. This brings up a good point, I should make try to make it down to the cities sometime this summer to go golfing with some of you folk.

        1. I'm in. I have golfed with both Philo and CoC on separate occasions, and it's quite fun.

I played my first 18 holes on Saturday and shot a 101. Darn, I always hope that I can break 100.

        2. I'm in. Haven't gone golfing since last year. Maybe could pick out some new discs to use and... wait, you mean boring regular golf. Never mind.

  3. I also had a bad day this week. Roommate ordered pizza and that's my weak spot. 2500 calories in one meal. Oops. I wouldn't feel so bad about that since I've been doing very well lately, but now I've got a weekend with friends and family coming up and I don't know if I'll be able to stop myself again.

    1. This is where I always fail. Linds and I have done a good job of ridding the house of stuff we don't need to be eating, but when her family invites us out for wings, I'm absolutely terrible at saying 'salad and light dressing'.

      1. The purpose of life is not weight control. I strongly recommend giving yourself permission to go Off The Plan occasionally without guilt. Or rather, make it part of The Plan.

  4. I felt really good about dinner last night... I grilled some steak (not the leanest meat, obviously), red pepper, onion, and portabello, all with balsamic and a little pepper. Threw it on some bread (a very good focaccia (also not the best for me)) with spinach and a little more balsamic. I wasn't hungry again all night. I did have a large piece of cake (finishing off the birthday cake...) a little later. But between 9 and 1, when I ended up going to bed, I was completely satiated. That's been a problem lately. I credit the good meal. It was fairly balanced, with lots of veggies (veggies > bread > steak)(and no cheese!), and just all-around rewarding.

I love food. A lot. So the idea that I can give myself a few extra calories sometimes (like with the good bread) and ultimately cut back in other places more easily... that's awesome. The trick, of course, is making sure you cut back in those other places. (No soda/juice/beer last night - part of being satiated was not craving those things).

  5. Jane Brody gets political on obesity

Willpower rarely helps people who struggle with their weight. With constant temptations to eat more, and especially more high-calorie foods, our society must change. Instead of subsidies for corn used to produce high-fructose corn syrup, let the government subsidize more fresh fruits and vegetables. Michael Pollan, an author and journalism professor at the University of California, Berkeley, has said it best: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” His newest book, “Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation,” adds a corollary: “And cook it yourself.”

No time? People always have time for what they consider important, and what is more important than your health? Home-cooked food contains better ingredients, and you know what you’re eating.

  6. I was ambitious today and biked to work for the first time. Despite the cold (40's), I still was a little sticky by the time I got to work. I would love to make this a consistent habit, but I'm going to have to work on the logistics more.
