2013 Game 85: Blue Jays at Twins

The Twins meet the Jays once more after a week or so of moving in opposite directions. Scott Diamond goes for the Twins, and I sure as heckfire do hope he's not ruined after his injury. The Jays start something called Todd Redmond, who has four appearances in his life, and just one start (not this year). He was mildly serviceable as a starter in AAA, having two meh years in 09-10, a nice year in 11 and an okay year in 12. I can't imagine he projects to be a long-term starter in the majors, but hey, I'll root for him starting after this game.

Go Twins! We're now double-digit games under .500. Let's fix that.

  1. Diamond pitching a lucky game so far. Lots of hard hit balls (all of them maybe?), no runs plated.

  2. Blue Jays have a guest in the booth who's extolling the virtues of old-school scouting and essentially saying that numbers can lie. This "debate" they're having is so low-level it's hilarious. "Well, I think you want your best player coming up with as many people on base as possible. In the end, what you really want is to score runs."

  3. Not that it's Buck Martinez's fault for working where he can, but I really don't like the overlap between broadcasters and coaches, and how often one becomes the other.

      1. I suppose announcers aren't too bad (provided they are decent at it), it's more the studio analyst that bothers me. You can't necessarily provide analysis that may critique someone harshly if you're worried about interviewing for a mangerial/GM position later. I always wonder how much is being left unsaid in their self-interest. I'd prefer a more independent broadcasting system. ESPN is the worst for this, not so much the RSNs.

        1. it seems like this situation happens more in basketball than baseball. looks at Flip Saunders. Fired from Washington, hired by ESPN, then by the Wolves in the span of like 4 months.

  4. Oh, for dumb. Rasmus, right there, was the first time I had the Spooky Feeling all season. Well...at least it still works.

  5. Jays show a graphic of Diamond's climbing ERA - first half of '12, second half of '12, and '13. "That's probably just hitters getting to know him a little better." Yep, gotta be that. Gooooooootta be that.

    1. It certainly doesn't look good:

      Split ERA IP
      May 2.27 31.2
      June 2.90 40.1
      July 3.54 28.0
      August 4.10 37.1
      Sept/Oct 4.79 35.2
      April/March 4.32 16.2
      May 5.67 33.1
      June 5.74 26.2
      July 2.70 6.2
  6. Third time through the order means bad things for Diamond:

Split G PA BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS BAbip tOPS+ sOPS+
    1st PA in G as SP 15 138 2 21 .281 .297 .422 .719 .309 69 102
    2nd PA in G as SP 15 132 5 14 .276 .303 .417 .720 .284 70 97
    3rd PA in G as SP 15 84 10 6 .438 .500 .781 1.281 .438 198 228
    4th+ PA in G as SP 1 1 0 0 1.000 1.000 2.000 3.000 1.000 584 672
    1. And yet, every time Diamond is hit hard the third time through the order, Gardy seems to get caught by surprise.

  7. the Twins could use a hit to the outfield

welp, an almostdoubleplay scores a run. weee

    1. The Jays feed showed the slo-mo replay and they still tried to sell it as a possible blown call. They now keep showing the first base umpire to try to villainize him.

  8. Twitter has informed me of a Fielder/Cabrera double steal on a Peralta K. I can only assume the ball got away from the catcher.

    1. They were going on a 3-2 count and the catcher didn't come up clean with the ball.

  9. I don't know what's been going on with the Twins the last week or so, but I know what's going to happen from here on in. We'll just have to settle for 114-48!
