  1. the NBC Extra Time thing for the EPL matches is pretty slick.

one of these years, Im going to lock onto a team. Right now, I just cheer for the big named teamed to lose. (City, United, Chelsea, etc)

    1. Always room on the Everton bandwagon. As long as you're rooting against City, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool you can't go wrong with anyone else.

      1. I just found out my brother is going to the Sunderland-Crystal Palace game in two weeks when he's in London. He contacted Sunderland and they got him tickets in their section because he told them he wanted to cheer on Jozy (and because many of their fans probably didn't feel like traveling down just to see Crystal Palace when they can go to London later in for Chelsea, Tottenham, etc.).

  2. It's pretty sweet. Also through my Apple TV, I can stream games on my TV. You can also do that with an HDMI cable

  3. Just taught NBBW how to change the tire on her road bike. She has an upcoming Triathlon and does not want to be stranded with a flat.

First time it took her about 40 minutes (25 to get the first rim started over the edge). Second time she completed it in about 10 minutes. W00t!

  4. Arsenal - Aston Villa is the soccer I like to watch. fast pace, trying for the home run pass, and a bit rough and tumble without being a full out brawl.

    1. I was tracking on La Liga after the Spaniards bought everyone who was anyone. Barcelona - Real Madrid for me.

    2. Agree. Too bad this isn't the game on NBC, might create more fans who want to check out games next week too.

  5. Finally tackled the poison ivy/oak whatever it is in the backyard, wearing gloves and carefully using plastic bags to grab them by the roots. I still managed to have some touch my arm and leg - natch. Hot soapy shower and hopefully I am in the clear.

Last year I got nailed in weeding the backyard - must have run into some of it while pulling weeds. Everywhere you touch gets an acidic welt. I don't remember this stuff being so toxic back in Minny - or is a different, more potent strain.

    1. next time those plant pop up, might have to con a beekeepers suit to make sure you dont get infected.

    2. From Poison-Ivy.org.

Within a hour or so you should rinse with lots of cold water - like a garden hose. Hot water will open your pores and let the oil in. Taking shower could be a disaster (see my father's story, "Washing made it spread." (Later, after the oil is all absorbed or washed off, and you HAVE a big rash, hot showers can ease the itch for a few hours.)

For up to about 6 hours washing with alcohol may still help remove the oil, but many say that after 1/2 hour the oil has soaked in and you can't remove it.

The next day is really too late. Check with your doctor to see if early treatment can prevent the rash before it really starts.

      Sorry, Bo.

  6. Woke up this morning and decided to make double batch tomato sauce with Mrs. Hayes. We've had a bumper crop of cherry tomatoes this year – our plants were seven feet tall before the fruit started dragging them back earthward. The sauce done, and there's still a 9x13 pan of cherry tomatoes in the kitchen, plus several large Abu Rawan heirlooms we haven't used yet.

    1. Have had 4 tomatoes so far - some yellowish circles where the tomato hangs on the plant - had the same deal two years ago - too much rain.

I did find a partially masticated tomato so I think we have company in the patch also.

Two fresh garden eggplants now in the kitchen for tonight's Imam Biyildi (Turkish version of Moussaka).

      1. We've had a few come off the vine partially moldy, which was disappointing. It's certainly been a delicate balance this year with moisture. My peppers – Hungarian blacks, Georgescu chocolates, and Ozark Giants – have been a disappointment.

        1. The weeds, on the other hand, have been amazing. I had four weeks of work trips in a row - leaving the garden unattended, only to come back and find weeds that were taller than me - no kidding.

Last weekend the Weedinator took charge - carnage ensued. This weekend I am bagging and hauling them to the curb. About half done, ran out of bags. Nasty stuff, tho.

          1. I hear you on the weeds. Mrs. Hayes pulled a ton of goldenrod out of one of the back gardens. I went to a salvage yard with my buddy on Wednesday, looking for some truck parts. The weeds were six feet high. We were there early enough in the morning that I wasn't too worried about rattlesnakes being active yet, but the problem was not being able to see them before you stepped on a sleeping rattler. And then there was the likelihood of ticks.

  7. I won't link to the article because it is on Yahoo and that would just drive some of you to make money for the author (NOT socal), but the subhead was "Twins relying too much on long ball". Hahahahahaha!

        1. 288/317/378 Miggy this year
          220/273/250 Carroll

Carroll was a -0.5 rWAR with the Twins, Miggy +0.6.

      1. So, he had an exception to use amphetamines for ADD but that expired in April?
        That seems odd.

  8. I see that Nick Blackburn is having surgery on his meniscus and is out for the year and probably done with his time as the Twins.

what I remember from his time with the Twins is that he pitched pretty good in game 163 2008, but that HR he gave up to Thome is still in orbit, and was pretty competitive in the LCS game against the Yankees, but giving up 1 one was 1 too many.

  9. So, Operation Bathroom Reconstruction began at about 8:00 this morning. The guys have ripped up our bathroom, laid new subfloor, and are laying tile (we get rid of the wall-to-wall in the master bathroom area at last; carpeting in a bathroom is nasty, IMO). New sinks, hardware, and countertop on top of the old double vanity, new mirror and light fixture above it.

I looked at the old sinks after they removed them (originals from the Developer POC line) -- both were nearly rotted through on the under side. Lousy enameling and crappy seal around the drain hardware meant rusting, crumbling cast iron. Home ownership rocks!

    1. I'm on day two of the master bedroom; I've said it before, the only thing I hate worse than painting is repainting. And that includes a vaulted ceiling.

      1. I am giving small thanks for my limited ability to lift my right arm above shoulder height. This is strictly a sign-the-check operation for me.

        1. I'm with you doc, these days I'm signing a check for painting more often than I sell one. (Not really true...) But, I have picked up some really nice stuff in the past year or so: This swell work by Daniel Buettner, two by John Diebel (sadly, none of the ones pictured, but they are equally cool), and this little beauty from Teri Bloch--whose studio is two doors down from the hall from me. Also have a couple of nice prints from a kid named Shores.)

People should definitely start writing more checks.

          1. bootsy - I sent you a note via fb back in early July about awesomeness I saw on www.'booting teh grounders' that may or may not (okay...most definitely may) have included my interest in some check writing.

    2. Our master bath is carpeted (but a little patch of tile around the toilet). How do people think that's a good idea?

      1. Our main bath was carpeted when we bought the house. We tore all the carpeting out of the house within the first week of ownership except for the the stuff in the bathroom, since there was only subfloor beneath the carpeting there. (We were rewarded with the original red oak floors everywhere else.) The bathroom carpet lasted about five months into ownership. Thankfully, the subfloor was bone dry underneath.

I figure the elderly woman who lived here before us had carpet put down to keep from slipping and falling in the bathroom, but since there was no linoleum underneath it and she was the original owner, I have no idea how long it was there or who installed it. I'm just glad it's gone.

Oddly enough, the house we rented for two years before buying also had carpeting in the bathroom. There was (likely) asbestos-impregnated linoleum under that stuff, and we made removal of carpet and linoleum a contingency on signing a lease. I never did ask the owner why she had installed carpeting in her bathroom. (She lived there before renting it out.) I have no idea what people are thinking when they do this.

        1. Prior house was built in the 50s. Removing carpet exposed pine floors.
Current house was built in the 80s. Peeking under the (cheap, off-white (tending towards tan with use)) carpeting (which was installed by the bank after the house was foreclosed) showed us that we've only got subfloors. Replacing almost everything with wood floors is a long-time goal, but right now cost-prohibitive.

          1. Our house was built in 1964. Word from longtime residents around here is that at one point the floor layers' union once required laying a hardwood floor in new builds, even if the owners wanted carpeting installed. Despite several nights of pulling staples out of the floor and scrubbing off sticky, disintegrated pad, I'm thankful for that requirement.

  10. Devastating legal news in Cali:

The porn industry suffered a defeat Friday when a federal judge rejected its contention that requiring adult film performers to wear condoms is unconstitutional.

Yet another disastrous blow to the California film industry. I can practically hear the panel vans loading up for Nevada from here.

hilariously, the plaintiffs in the case contended that this was a 1st Amendment issue. I know that many men think with their dicks, but talk with them too?
