Minor Details: Games of 8/29

The Red Wings take a tough loss despite fine pitching by Cole DeVries.  Elizabethton is eliminated.  The Rock Cats win in extra innings.

BUFFALO 3, ROCHESTER 2 IN BUFFALO

Batting starEduardo Escobar was 1-for-2 with a walk and a home run, his third.

Pitching starCole DeVries pitched seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Sean Nolin struck out five in 5.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit and three walks.  Luis Jimenez was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit two-run homer.

Key inning:  The eighth.  The Red Wings led 1-0.  In the top of the inning, James Beresford led off with a single, took second on a bunt, and scored on a two-out single by Deibinson Romero to make it 2-0.  In the bottom of the inning, Michael Tonkin came in to pitch.  With one out, Jim Negrych walked and Jimenez hit a two-run homer to tie the game.  With two out, Blake Gaillen and Mauro Gomez hit back-to-back doubles to put the Bisons ahead.

Prospect watchChris Parmelee was 0-for-4.  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.

Pennant race update:  The Red Wings remain second in the International League North, 3.5 games behind Pawtucket.  Their elimination number for winning the division is two.  Rochester is also second in the wild card race, a half game behind Norfolk.  Their elimination number for the wild card is five.

NEW BRITAIN 4, TRENTON 1 IN TRENTON (13 INNINGS)

Batting starsEvan Bigley was 2-for-5 with a double.

Pitching starsAlex Meyer struck out six in four shutout innings, giving up six hits and no walks.  Jose Gonzalez pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks with one strikeout.  Cole Johnson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Bryan Mitchell struck out ten in 7.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks.  Jose Pirela was 2-for-7 with a double and an RBI.  Gary Sanchez was 2-for-5 with a walk.  The Thunder out-hit the Rock Cats 12-6.

Key inning:  The thirteenth.  The score was tied at one.  Angel Morales was hit by a pitch and was bunted to second.  An intentional walk to Eddie Rosario and an accidental walk to Nate Hanson loaded the bases.  The next batter popped up, but Daniel Ortiz came through with a three-run double to give the Rock Cats a 4-1 lead.

Prospect watchRosario was 0-for-5 with a walk and scored once.

BRADENTON 5, FORT MYERS 2 IN BRADENTON (GAME 1--COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting starsMike Kvasnicka was 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his eighth), scoring twice.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  J. D. Williams was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Adrian Sampson pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  Gift Ngoepe was 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times.  Stetson Allie was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Marauders led 2-0.  In the top of the inning, Kvasnicka walked, went to second on a Williams single, took third on a ground out, and scored on a Buxton single to make it 2-1.  In the bottom half, a walk and singles by Ngoepe and Allie loaded the bases with one out.  Willy Garcia then hit a two-run single to put Bradenton in the lead 4-1.

Prospect watchDalton Hicks was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4.  Steven Gruver struck out four in three innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.

FORT MYERS 2, BRADENTON 1 IN BRADENTON (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starsMatt Koch was 2-for-3.  J. D. Williams was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching starsJason Wheeler struck out five in six innings, giving up one run on five hits and three walks.  Adrian Salcedo pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Emmanuel De Leon struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.  Junior Sosa was 2-for-3.  Gift Ngoepe was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The score was tied at one.  Koch singled with one out but was forced at second, making Mike Kvasnicka the baserunner.  Kvasnicka stole second and scored on a Williams single to put the Miracle in the lead.

Prospect watchByron Buxton was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-2 with an RBI.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Kvasnicka was 0-for-3 and scored once.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, KANE COUNTY 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Tyler Grimes was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Bo Altobelli was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Michael Quesada was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Brett Lee struck out five in six shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.  Hudson Boyd pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The Kernels led 1-0.  Grimes led off with a single and stole second.  With one out, Mike Gonzales hit a two-run homer to make the score 3-0.

Prospect watch:  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

PULASKI 4, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 2-for-4.  Rory Rhodes was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home  run, his fourth.

Pitching star:  Felix Jorge struck out nine in 6.2 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Gabe Saquilon pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.  Aaron Barbosa was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Jeffrey Zimmerman was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Key inning:  The eighth.  The Mariners trailed 2-1.  With one out, Barbosa singled, Isaiah Yates walked, and Zimmerman singled in the tying run.  Brandon Peterson came in to replace Carson Goldsmith, but a sacrifice fly plated the go-ahead run.

Prospect watch:  Zach Larson was 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.  Romy Jimenez was 1-for-4.

Pennant race update:  Elizabethton has been eliminated from the playoffs.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL ORIOLES 2 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-5 with a triple and scored once.  Joel Polanco was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Jose Abreu struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Cameron Booser struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Miguel Gonzalez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Cory Segui was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and an RBI.  Chance Sisco was 2-for-4.  Oswill Lartiguez was 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The eighth.  The score was tied at two.  A pair of walks opened the inning.  Chad Christensen laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error on the play allowed both runners to score and put Christensen on third base.  A sacrifice fly scored him to make the score 5-2.

Prospect watch:  Damian Defrank pitched one inning, giving up one run on two hits and no walks with one strikeout.

This concludes the GCL season.  The Twins finished 28-32, third in the GCL South, seven games behind the Red Sox.

  1. It is clear that they never should have sent the guys back down to Rochester who had a taste of losing with the big club. Killed their chances.
