Venezuelan League: Games of 1/13

Day twelve of the playoffs.  Oswaldo Arcia leads Zulia to a rare victory.  Some Lively pitching carries Magallanes.

ZULIA 3, LA GUAIRA 1 IN ZULIA

Twins:  Oswaldo Arcia (Zulia) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

La Guaira:  Cesar Suarez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Tyson Brummett pitched 5.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  Marlon Arias pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk with one strikeout.

Zulia:  Jose Pirela (Yankees) was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Ender Inciarte (Arizona) was 2-for-4.  Roy Merritt pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  An error put Zulia ahead 1-0 in the first inning.  The lead held until the seventh, when Rafael Ortega (St. Louis) singled in a run to tie it at one.  In the bottom of the eighth, Zulia had men on first and second when Arcia doubled them both home to give Zulia a 3-1 lead.  La Guaira went down in order in the ninth.

MAGALLANES 6, ANZOATEGUI 2 IN MAGALLANES

Twins:  Eduardo Escobar (Anzoategui) was 1-for-4 with a walk.

Anzoategui:  Jose Gil (Yankees) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jackson Melian was 2-for-3 with a run.

Magallanes:  Mario Lisson (San Francisco) was 2-for-4 with two home runs, his fifth and sixth.  Juan Rivera was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.  Mitch Lively (San Francisco) pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Anzoategui started the scoring in the second on an RBI double by Jose Gil (Yankees).  Magallanes did not get on the board until the fifth, when Lisson homered to tie it and Ramon Hernandez drove in the go-ahead run with a double.  Magallanes took control in the sixth on Rivera's three-run homer.  Anzoategui got one back in the seventh and loaded the bases with two out, but could not do any more and never came that close again.
