Mexican Matchups: Games of 1/16

Day five of the semi-finals.  Navojoa puts away Mexicali in a pitchers' duel.  A big comeback gives Los Mochis a win in a pivotal game.

NAVOJOA 1, MEXICALI 0 IN NAVOJOA

Mexicali:  Gil Velazquez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double.  Edgar Osuna struck out eight in 5.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit and four walks.

Navojoa:  Wes Bankston was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Carlos Orrantia was 0-for-0 with three walks.  Salvador Robles pitched six innings, allowing five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  The lone run came on Bankston's one-out homer in the fourth.  Mexicali's biggest threat came in the second, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the inning.  The also put men on second and third with one out in the fifth, but a line out and a fly out ended that threat.

LOS MOCHIS 8, HERMOSILLO 7 IN LOS MOCHIS

Hermosillo:  Luis Alfonzo Garcia was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer (his fourth), scoring twice.  Daryle Ward was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Zelous Wheeler was 1-for-4 with a home run.

Los Mochis:  Emmanuel Avila was 3-for-3 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Ramon Orantes was 1-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer, his fourth.  Oliver Perez struck out four in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

The game:  Wheeler homered in the first to give Hermosillo a 1-0 lead.  They added three in the second on only one hit, as they drew four walks and also benefited from a passed ball.  Garcia's two-run homer in the third made it 6-0 Hermosillo.  Los Mochis got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Juan Carlos Gamboa and got back into the game with three in the fourth, two of the runs scoring on an Orantes homer.  Ward homered in the fifth to put Hermosillo up 7-4, and there things stayed until the bottom of the ninth.  Los Mochis opened the inning with three walks and then got a two-run single from Jake Fox to cut the lead to 7-6.  A double play gave Hermosillo hope of holding off Los Mochis, but three consecutive singles gave Los Mochis the victory.  Avila drove in the tying run and Sebastian Valle drove in the winning run.
