  6. A guy from the LA Times put together a "True Detective" playlist on Spotify, and it is absolutely fantastic. The first time I saw T. Bone Burnett's name in the credits as musical director (or whatever his formal title is), I knew the music was going to perfect.

  7. I took my dog on a walk and she was attacked by two pit bulls. Fortunately, it was two blocks from my house. I let her off the leash so she could protect herself. She's a German Shepherd. She managed to get away and run home. One followed her and I ran home and let her in the house and managed to get myself in the house without allowing the other dog inside. It looks like she avoided major damage. I found one cut on her back right leg and it looks like she tore a duclaw. Her back left side is all matted down with dog slobber. I think they were "playing" since they did more barking than anything. While she was being attacked, a guy drove up in a pickup and said they had just attacked him. When I got home and called 911, they got my info and said that they had already got calls on them. The next person who tells me how great pit bulls are might just get punched.

    1. Ugh, sorry to hear that. Our neighbor has a little seven-pound poodle that got attacked by a pitbull at the dog park recently as the pitbull's owner just stood by apathetically.

      1. I mostly blame the irresponsible jerks, gangbangers, and wannabees who get pitbulls and turn them into vicious animals. Those things can be very loving, but there's no getting around the fact that they are powerful beasts.

        2. Fortunately, they are short beasts. My dog is a small German shepherd but she was taller than them both at the shoulder and lengthwise. I think that is what saved her from serious damage. Plus, they may have been play fighting. If so, I don't want to think about what if they were actually attacking.

          1. My golden gets especially aggressive with other dogs when he's leashed on our walks. I suppose he thinks he's protecting us or maybe he's play fighting, but it's such an odd experience and (if play fighting) I always shudder at what a "real" fight would look like. I'm glad your pup made it through relatively unscathed.

            1. Funny. My golden can't get down on the ground on her back fast enough. Just entirely submissive.

            2. My dog is more likely to growl and snap at people she doesn't know when she is on a leash. I think she is just scared and she knows she can't run away. She probably feels backed into a corner.

        3. The biggest problem is that when you see strange pit bulls, you don't know how they have been handled or treated. The ASPC says that pit bulls were specifically bred for dog fighting. Cesar Millan's website claims that pit bulls are very people oriented and can be great with children, but if they are trained to be guard dogs, it can very often lead to them being aggressive towards all humans. When I see a pit bull wandering my neighborhood, I see a gun wondering around. I don't know if it is loaded or not, but I'm not going to take that chance.

            When I was a kid I was confronted by an aggressive pit bull owned by my grandparents' delinquent neighbors (in my grandparents' yard, no less), so I feel exactly the same way. Fortunately, I had a baseball bat in my hands at that time.

            I'm glad you and your dog made it through without major injury, socal.

        4. Any dog can be a good dog or a bad dog. The problem is a bad pit bull is a lot more dangerous than a bad Yorkie. I don't like cast aspersions on an entire breed, but unless I know the pit bull personally, I treat it as though it was a bad dog just in case it is.

          1. I can't say dogs are a full-blown phobia for me, but... I am not comfortable around 90% of dogs, of any type. Never have been.

      2. I wonder if you can report this as vandalism (or some such) to the police, on the off chance that the dog is caught and owner ID'd?

    1. The fact that we had 8 Sundays of ordinary time before Lent seemed crazy. I prefer to get my Lent out of the way early in the liturgical year.

  10. Oto Osenieks' playing career is done because of his knee injury. That's really sad. He had one year of eligibility left with the Gophers, but they've already announced he won't be back because of the knee. He will be a coach of some kind.

    NHL Trade Deadline

    I know we've mostly abdicated our responsibility to keep you all up-to-date on the local hockey club this season. For those still interested, the NHL Trade Deadline was today at 2 PM.
    The Wild made a move for a back-up goalie yesterday, getting Ilya Bryzgalov from Edmonton for a fourth-round draft pick (acquired in the Pominville trade with Buffalo last year - still have their own).
    Today, Russo reports are that they have traded with Buffalo again this year, bringing in winger Matt Moulson and forward Cody McCormick in exchange for a couple of draft picks (Russo guesses the 2nd rounder from the Setoguchi trade with Winnipeg at least) and fourth-line winger Torrey Mitchell.

    Moulson, 30, has scored 17 goals and 38 points in 55 games this season between the Islanders and Sabres. He was acquired in October for [Thomas] Vanek, a conditional first-round pick and a second-round pick. He is the last year of his deal with a $3.133 million cap hit.

    1. I don't even want to look at the Sabres' roster right now. I have no idea what it looks like, but it cannot be good.

      1. Last fall I was playing a Diamond Mind baseball series head-to-head against my opponent (an immigration attorney) over the internet when he needed to step away for about 20 minutes. When he returned, he explained that the Sabres GM had called him and he needed to start working on work visas for a couple of players who were being acquired.

    2. Mooney on Puck Daddy also wrote that it was a second round pick. Since Buffalo already has the Wild's second from the Pominville trade, it must be Winnipeg's pick. I like it. Rentals don't seem to cost as much this year. Moulson gives the wild a pretty sharp-looking top six forward group. Mitchell wanted out and McCormick is large, I guess.

      1. This sounds like a great move, and one they really needed to make. With 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) this season between NYI and Sabres, Moulson would be in control of 3rd place on the Wild behind only Pominville (42 points w/ 28 goals) and Parise (39 pts w/ 21 goals), well ahead of Heatley (25 pts on 12 goals and a -11 to go with it!).

    3. Torrey Mitchell wanted to be traded so it is nice the Wild got something halfway in quality in return.
      Sounds like Backstrom and Harding will be out for the rest of the year so riding Kuemper and Bryzgalov...yay?

      1. Yeah...I'm hoping that a) we don't see the pumpkin with Darcy or that b) a contract year for Bryzgalov means he's on top of his game. Unfortunately, he's still getting paid from his time in Philly so he doesn't "need" the money...

        Philly bought Bryzgalov out of the last seven years of his contract last summer. He’ll receive $1.643 million a year through 2027-28.

The team had to get him off their book in order to sign another player, so they worked out a deal: If Bonilla would defer payment for a decade, they would pay him an annuity worth far more than the $5.9 million.       1. I thought they got a pool of money to sign players based on their draft position and they can choose to spread that money around however they want.

        1. The pool is for the first ten picks. In rounds 11-40, a team can offer $100,000 and anything over counts against the pool. A team can go over, but in the 38th round they aren't going to go much higher. It makes sense for the player to not sign and hope they can move into the first ten rounds next year.
