Minor Details: Games of May 27

Three games were lopsided, one was suspended.  Scott Diamond was pounded again.  A good day for Max Kepler.

SYRACUSE 10, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Chris Rahl was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Catcherr Chris Herrmann was 2-forr-4 with a rrunn.  Doug Bernier was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.

Pitching star:  Deolis Guerra pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Zach Walters was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer.  Ex-Twin Brock Peterson was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run (his sixth), driving in two.  Brandon Laird was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.

The game:  Laird's two-run double and a two-run single by John Johnson gave Syracuse a 4-0 lead after two.  Peterson doubled in a run in the third and Walters hit a three-run homer in the fourth to make it 8-0.  Both Rochester runs scored in the seventh on a double by Rahl.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-3.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Colabello was 1-for-4.  Starter Scott Diamond pitched 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

NEW BRITAIN AT PORTLAND

The game was suspended with one out in the bottom of the second with the score tied 5-5.  Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in a five-run first for New Britain.  Portland came back with one in the first and four in the second.  They have a man on first with one out.  Daniel Ortiz is 2-for-2 with a triple.  Pat Dean starter for the Rock Cats and has been charged with five earned runs so far.

FORT MYERS 11, CLEARWATER 0 IN CLEARWATER

Batting stars:  Stuart Turner was 4-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in four.  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.  Tyler Grimes was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Matt Tomshaw pitched eight innings, giving up three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Brandon Peterson pitched one inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Art Charles was 2-for-3 with a double.

The game:  Turner had a two-run single in a three-run second.  Fort Myers got one  in the third, two in the fourth, two more in the sixth, and three in the ninth.  Clearwater did not get a hit until the fifth.  That was their best scoring chance.  Charles led off with a double and took third on a ground out.  He then tried to score on a fly ball to right field, but Adam Brett Walker II gunned him down at the plate.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-1 with an RBI.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Walker II was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-5 with two runs.

CEDAR RAPIDS 16, BELOIT 5 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Ryan Walker was 2-for-4 with three walks and four runs.  Mitch Garver was 3-for-5 with a walk, scoring once and driving in four.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-5 with a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Starter Derrick Penilla, normally a reliever, pitched four shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks with two strikeouts.  Hudson Boyd pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Mathews was 2-for-5 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Melvin Mercedes was 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs.  Jaycob Brugman was 1-for-2 with three walks and an RBI.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth.  Cedar Rapids opened the inning with four singles, followed by a hit batsman, followed by three more singles.  The result was six runs and men on first and third before anyone was retired.  The Kernels got seven runs in the entire inning.  Beloit tried to stay in the game with three in the bottom of the fifth, but Cedar Rapids got three more in the sixth, another three in the seventh, and three more in the eighth.

Of note:  Ivory Thomas was 1-for-1 with a three-run homer, his second.  Tanner Vavra was 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Brandon Bixler got the win despite giving up all five runs on four hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
