2014 Game 53: Twins @ the Fancy Bedpan

Kevin Correia takes the hill for the Twins, Masahiro Tanaka does the same for the Yankees. Tanaka's been pretty fearsome so far (2.61 FIP, 10.1 K/9 against only 1.3 BB/8, league leading ERA, if you're into that sort of thing). Correia....has definitely pitched baseball games for the Twins.

Gotta say, this pitching matchup doesn't look particularly promising.

  1. So far, Correia appears to be going with the "let them hit it very hard" technique. I disagree with this decision.

  2. Molly looking a little mangy in the dugout there. Either shave or don't at all.

    1. Funny, I was joaking, but then MM shows up in the yanquis booth hawking for prostate cancer.

  3. Dozier's batting average goes down even though he has been on base twice because he has reached on errors

      1. Yeah. Tex was going to throw to second, but didnt have a good angle on the throw, so he threw to first. Tanaka beat the runner there (barely), but never touched first base (he put his foot sort of in the basepath, instead... just asking for someone to sprain their ankle)

    1. I had Gameday up when I walked away from the TV, and strike 2 to Mauer looked inside the RH batter's box.

        1. I haven't had a ton of time to watch games this season, but it seems like Mauer gets an awful lot of questionable strikes called on him.

          1. I think you are right.
I wonder if it comes from Mauer not being behind the plate anymore.

  4. I think Dick Bremer knows what xFIP is, but is afraid to blurt it out in fear of scaring people.

    1. I really wonder how much Bert shuts down this sort of discussion. Smalley brings up the point that when the Twins were walking, they were scoring.

      1. I like a lot of what Smalley brings to the announcers booth: reading defenses, looking at batting mechanics, thinking along with the pitcher/hitter just to name a few.
He just uses too many words to make his point.

        1. I totally agree. If he can find a way to get to his point more economically, he'd be a pretty good replacement for Bert.

      2. It was very natural walking by Killebrew's plaque in the HOF last weekend, then Kirby. Then I got to the Flying Dutchman and I thot, really?

  5. Bremer dancing around the idea that BABIP is something that can even out over the course of a year for a pitching staff.

    1. Bremer's learning but will continue to have a hard time coming to grips with these new concepts. It's like when Adelbert Steiner realized that Princess Garnet had outgrown the need to be protected, and he wouldn't say anything because he didn't want to go on without purpose. But having sworn fealty, must he live in servitude? If Steiner can learn, certainly Bremer can.

      1. I... still have to play that game. I haven't had good luck finding it for less than $crazy. Is it on the PSN networl for PS3?

          1. Finding FFVIII didn't prove to be difficult.

Finding the motivation to play through FFVIII, on the other hand....I'm 0 for 2.

            1. Ugh, VIII. Decent idea, terrible script. The gameplay's engaging, but only until you realize you can completely exploit the Junction system with Comet on everyone.

  6. Well done on the gamelog header, nibs. Well worth it.

Now I want a bedpan with a Yankees logo on it.

  7. Little known fact: Mark Teixeira once auditioned to play the role of Howard Tuttleman on Parks and Recreation.

  8. Gladden: "The baserunning by the Yankees in this series... horrendous."

I'm enjoying it, actually. It's nice to see the opposing team falling apart on the field for a change.

    1. It's also kind of nice to see real, actual outfielders making plays for the Twins. Amazing what a guy can do when he's had more than 18 MLB innings in the position he's playing.

    1. You see? That's why you should never use a reliever for more than one inning.

  9. This is more like the Twins-Yankees games we're used to. The Twins miss some chances early, the Yankees win it late. Seems like old times.
