Minor Details: Games of July 13

Alex gets into the Swim for Cedar Rapids.  Murphy takes it to the Max for Elizabethton.  D. J. Baxendale just has a plain old good game for Fort Myers.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE AT ROCHESTER

Rained out.

READING 6, NEW BRITAIN 4 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Lance Ray was 1-for-3 with  double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jairo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Mason Melotakis pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Brock Stassi was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer (his seventh) and two runs.  Aaron Altherr was 2-for-4 with a home run, hi seventh.  Logan Moore was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.

The game:  Rodriguez singled in a run in a two-run second to give New Britain a 2-0 lead.  Moore's two-run homer in the fourth tied it at two.  In the fifth, Jake Fox homered and Stassi hit a two-run homer to make it 5-2.  Another Reading homer, this one by Altherr, made it 6-2 in the seventh.  The Rock Cats got one back in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-4, but the last five New Britain batters were retired.

Of note:  Mike Kvasnicka was 1-for-4.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-4.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Starter Jason Wheeler pitched five innings, giving up five runs on ten hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 3, DUNEDIN 1 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Nate Roberts was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Stuart Turner was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Pitching star:  D. J. Baxendale pitched a complete game, pitching seven innings and giving up one run on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition star:  Marcus Knecht was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run.

The game:  Two singles and a sacrifice fly put Fort Myers on the board in the first inning.  Knecht tripled and scored in the second to tie it at one.  Roberts tripled in the go-ahead run and later came around to score in the third to make it 3-1.  And that was all the scoring there was.  Dunedin put men on first and third with one out in the fourth, but did not threaten again after that.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-2 with an RBI.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3.

FORT MYERS 8, DUNEDIN 4 IN FORT MYERS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  B. J. Hermsen pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Todd Van Steensel pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  Madison Boer pitched 1.2 perfect innings.

Opposition star:  Peter Mooney was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Dunedin got RBI singles by Kevin Patterson and L. B. Danzler to take a 2-0 lead in the first.  Mike Gonzales doubled in a run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the third, Niko Goodrum delivered a two-run double and later came around to score to put Fort Myers up 4-2.  Christian Lopes brought home a run with a double in the third to cut the margin to 4-3, but the Miracle came up with another three-run inning in the bottom of the third to take control of the game.  Walker II had a two-run double in the inning and came around to score on a Mejia single.  The lead was never less than three runs after that.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Nate Roberts was 0-for-4.  Gonzales was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Max Kepler was 2-for-3 with a run.  Steven Gruver came out of the bullpen to make a start and pitched one inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, CLINTON 5 IN CLINTON (7 INNINGS--RAIN)

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Ryan Walker was 0-for-0 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Chantz Mack was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.  Luis Caballero was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.

The game:  An RBI single by Aaron Barbosa and a two-run Mack single made it 3-0 Clinton in the third.  It stayed 3-0 until the sixth, when Cedar Rapids put together five singles, two walks, and an error to score all seven of their runs.  The LumberKings scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh when the game was halted with two out in the bottom of the seventh.

Of note:  Jon Murphy was 0-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Starter Lewis Thorpe struck out five in four innings, giving up three runs on four hits and no walks.

ELIZABETHTON 10, DANVILLE 6 IN DANVILLE

Batting stars:  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a walk, driving in five.  Max Murphy was 3-for-5 with a home run (his sixth) and a walk, scoring three times.  Austin Diemer was 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  John Curtiss pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Jordan Edgerton was 2-for-4 with a double and a hit by pitch, scoring four times.  Alejandro Piloto was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.  Yeudi Grullon was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  It was tied at three after three.  Elizabethton took control when Kuresa hit a three-run homer in the fourth to put the Twins up 6-3.  They added a run in the fifth to make it 7-3.  Piloto singled in a run in the seventh to make it 7-4, but Elizabethton got two in the eighth on an error and one on a Murphy homer in the ninth to make it 10-4.  Trevor Sprowl hit a two-run single for Danville in the ninth but the Braves never threatened to get back into the game.

Of note:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-6 with a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-6 with two runs.  Starter Michael Cederoth pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
