Minor Details: Games of July 22

Mark Hamburger pitches like top sirloin.  A big day for Eddie Rosario isn't enough.  Walkoff wins for Fort Myers and the DSL Twins.

ROCHESTER 4, DURHAM 0 AT DURHAM

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger struck out nine in seven innings, giving up four hits and no walks.  Ryan Pressly struck out four in two innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Wilson Betemit was 2-for-4.  Brandon Gomes struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

The game:  Romero doubled and scored in the second to put Rochester on the board 1-0.  In the fifth, a walk and three doubles (by Nate HansonJames Beresford, and Pinto) made the score 4-0.  Meanwhile, Hamburger was in complete control of the game, giving up only four singles in seven innings.  Durham did not get a man past first base until the seventh, when they got consecutive two-out singles.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 2-for-4.  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

ALTOONA 10, NEW BRITAIN 9 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Eddie Rosario was 3-for-5 with a double and two two-run homers (his fourth and fifth), scoring three times.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  Adrian Salcedo struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.  Daniel Turpen pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Willy Garcia was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Gift Ngoepe was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Dan Gamache was 2-for-6 with a two-run homer, his third.

The game:  It was a pretty wild one early.  Gamache hit a two-run homer and Ngoepe a two-run double in a first inning that put Altoona up 5-0 before New Britain batted.  The Rock Cats battled back.  Mike Kvasnicka had a two-run single in a three-run first.  Rosario hit a two-run homer in the second to tie it at five.  Rosario hit another two-run homer to cap a four-run third and put New Britain ahead 9-5.  Then it was the Curve's turn to come back.  RBI singles by Elias Diaz and Garcia led to a three-run fifth that made it 9-8.  It stayed there until the ninth.  A sacrifice fly tied the score and a single by Alen Hanson made it 10-9 Altoona.  The Rock Cats got a pair of two-out hits, putting men on second and third, in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game.

Of note:  Tony Thomas was 0-for-5 with a walk.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Starter Virgil Vasquez pitched four innings, giving up eight runs on thirteen hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 7, BREVARD COUNTY 6 IN FORT MYERS (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Tyler Grimes was 4-for-5 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with a double and two walks, driving in one.  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-4 with a double and two walks, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Todd Van Steensel struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Tyler Jones struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.  Steven Gruver pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Tyler Wagner pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Michael Reed was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a double, scoring twice.

The game:  Brevard County scored once in the first and Reed homered in the third to make it 2-0.  The Manatees added two more in the sixth to go up 4-0.  Doubles by Grimes and Polanco got Fort Myers on the board in the eighth, but the Miracle still trailed 4-1 going to the bottom of the ninth.  Three walks, a Grimes double, and a Travis Harrison single produced three runs to tie the score.  Brandon Macias hit a two-run double in the eleventh to put Brevard County ahead 6-4, but Dalton Hicks hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eleventh to tie the score again.  In the twelfth, Gonzales hit a leadoff double, went to third on a bunt, and scored on a Grimes single to win the game.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.  Harrison was 1-for-5 with a walk and a run, scoring once and driving in one.  Hicks was 1-for-5 with a walk and a two-run homer, his sixth.  Starter Ethan Mildren pitched six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS

No game scheduled.

BLUEFIELD 7, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN BLUEFIELD

Batting stars:  Jeremias Pineda was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Pat Kelly was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Evan Smith pitched six shutout innings, giving up six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Josh Almonte was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Gabriel Cenas was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  Almonte's two-run triple put Bluefield ahead 2-0 after three.  The Blue Jays scored once in the fourth and got RBI singles from Almonte and Rowdy Tellez in the sixth to make the score 5-0.  Elizabethton got on the board in the seventh with RBI singles by Pineda and Vavra to cut the lead to 5-2, but Bluefield put the game out of reach with single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Of note:  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Max Murphy was 0-for-4.  Starter Sam Gibbons pitched five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.

GCL ORIOLES AT GCL TWINS

The game was suspended with two out in the top of the third.  The Orioles lead 3-0 and have the bases loaded.

DSL TWINS 3, DSL WHITE SOX 2 AT TWIINS

Batting stars:  None.

Pitching stars:  Randolph Perez pitched five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Argenis Silva struck out three in three perfect innings.  Juan Herrera pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.

Opposition stars:  Nelson Acosta pitched five innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.  Jose Reyes was 2-for-3 with a double.

The game:  The White Sox scored on a wild pitch in the first and got an RBI single from Carlos Mejia in the second to go ahead 2-0.  The Twins did not get a hit until the sixth, when Roni Tapia singled.  The single came between two errors and led to the first Twins run, cutting the lead to 2-1.  It stayed 2-1 until the ninth.  Jermaine Palacios drew a one-out walk and scored when the White Sox made two errors on the same play, tying it at two and putting the winning run on third.  Luis Arraez then delivered a game-winning RBI single.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 0-for-4.  Junior Amarante was 0-for-4 with a run.  Tapia was 1-for-4.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-3 with a walk.
