Friday Music Day: End of July, 2014

I had hoped to finish my regular summer mix last night and posting it here. But out-of-town guests kept me away from the internet.
Post your list.

    Jayhawks at the Turf Club September 4 go on sale today at noon. I'm sure it will be sold out in a flash but definitely will try to get tix. Also does anyone want to go the Buzzcocks September 11th at Varsity Theater? I've heard good things about their shows.

    Houses of the Holy -- best Zeppelin album right?

    1. Re: Houses ... when I'm listening to it, I think it's their best. Same for III, IV, II & Zeppelin

    2. I've got an extra ticket for Jayhawks in the mainroom on Friday the 5th if you fail today.

      1. Thanks. I really want to see them in a small venue like the Turf Club, so I don't know if I will be able to overcome that disappointment and go a First Avenue show. Don't save the ticket just for me but if you still have it closer to the date, I just might take you up on your offer.

      2. Got two tickets to Turf Club show. :o) Tweeted it and already got inquiries about 2nd ticket.

        EDIT: Also got very lucky. Heard people were shutout at 12:01.

                1. Sweetness. First (and last) time I saw these fellas was '98 or '99 at a small campus auditorium in Morris. This was before I knew Uncle Tupelo was a thing...for real.

    3. I would love to be in Minneapolis from Sept. 10-14th or so for the Buzzcocks and Replacements/Hold Steady, but unfortunately I have a big footy match on the 13th that I can't miss and my parents are coming down to see it.

        1. Thanks for the offer, but the Texas Cup has to be defended and I need to be there to lock down my starting spot for Nationals in October.

          1. We could've had a swingin' bachelor pad weekend. The old guy widower and young single guy hitting the shows, breaking hearts along the way. There's Spooky's next script!

        1. Me.

          I'd whiffed on attempts during the pre-sale, and a friend of mine was shutout the day they officially went on sale. After hearing what people were asking for tix on Craigslist, I resigned myself to missing the show and having to content myself with the fact that I saw them 80 times (give or take) during the first go around.

          But lo and behold, I got a call from an old friend who was living in Oakland asking if I was going to the show. When I said "no ticket", he said "I got one for you. Face value." He added it was the least he could do, since I was the one that dragged him along to his very first Replacements show at Harriet Island back in '82(?) Thanks, Jerry.

          1. I can't believe tix are still hovering around $180 on Stub Hub, I gotta think those are coming down. I'm going and actually a bunch of my friends going too. Since I saw them last year at Riot Fest I was thinking no big deal but as I think about it and the date gets closer, I think it's gonna be a big effin' deal. Fans - old and new - are going to be very psyched and blown away.

                1. FWIW, the same thing was happening with the Neutral Milk Hotel show in Chicago. However, a day or 2 before the show, finding face (or less!) wasn't too difficult.

  2. 1. Cryin' Shame - Lyle Lovett - Lyle Lovett and his Large Band
    2. How'm I Gonna Get Back Home - He's My Brother She's My Sister
    3. Ooh la La - Faces - Ooh La La
    4. Let the Good Times Roll - Shirley & Lee - Doctors, Professors, Kings, & Queens

  4. Wilco - "It Just That Simple" A.M.
    MGMT - "The Youth" Oracular Spectacular
    Jay-Z - "Excuse Me, Miss" Blueprint2
    Kanye - "Black Skinhead" Yeezus
    The Cure - "Last Dance" Disintegration

    Diablo - "Jail Flick" The Wire soundtrack
    Jay-Z & The Roots - "Heart of the City" MTV Unplugged
    Queen - "Don't Stop Me Now" The Platinum Collection
    Matthew Mayfield - "Breathe Out In Black" 72 Songs
    Childish Gambino - "I. The Party" Because the Internet

    1. As a Community fan, I know who Childish Gambino is, but never listening to his stuff. But I came across "3005" the other day and I cant get enough of it.

      1. His show at SXSW this year was the highlight of the week for me.*

        *As a complete show. The best part was a one-song cameo by Snoop at YG's set.

  5. Strong set a lists so far today. Here is mine to ruin it

    "Queen Bitch" - David Bowie Live at the Beeb
    "Baby Blue" - Badfinger The Best of Badfinger
    "You May Be Right" - Billy Joel Glass Houses
    "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" - Jimmy Buffet Songs You Know By Heart
    "Graceland" - Paul Simon Graceland

    "Santeria" - Sublime Sublime
    "Aint Messin Round" - Gary Clark Jr Blak and Blu
    "Behind Blue Eyes" - The Who Who's Next
    "Running Back" - Thin Lizzy Jailbreak
    "The Guns of Brixton" - The Clash London Calling

  6. I went and saw The Body last night. Their set was 25 minutes which was not what I was expecting from a doom metal band. They played a set that was paced like a hardcore set. It was weird but awesome.

    And now I'm really excited to go see Boris in 3½ weeks.

      1. That's what's so strange. They played 7 or 8 songs. It was very intense and very loud. I could feel my head vibrating during the whole set. I'm definitely glad I went.

  7. * Section IV - Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble - Music for 18 Musicians (S. Reich)
    * 90 Hour Sleep - Dredg - Live at the Fillmore
    * Drivin' Through the Rain - Husky Burnette - Facedown in the Dirt
    * The Wire 3 - Alvin Lucier - Music on a Long Thin Wire
    * Gaberdine - Walls - (self-titled)
    * Diamond Eyes - Deftones - Diamond Eyes
    * Gary's Got a Boner - The Replacements - Let it Be
    * Stupid Girl - Neil Young - Zuma
    * Beware Of - Janus - I Am Not ___ (A. Clyne)
    * Nothing Special - Boris - Pink

    I listened to this mix from the Funeral Fog label last night. They're a Scandinavian dark ambient cassette-only label, and most of their albums are pretty much unavailable (ultimate hipster cred!) but I was really drawn into the mix. It helped that I was reading about Lovecraft as it played.

    1. I've said this before but if it didn't have such a goofy subject matter (and title), Gary's Got a Boner could've been a stone cold rock classic.

  8. The Hold Steady are doing a show here on the 8th. Tickets are free, but you gotta win them in a drawing. *Fingers crossed*

  9. The Antlers latest record Familiars sees them continuing their elegant melancholy. Opening track "Palaces" is nothing short of gorgeous.
