Minor Details: Games of August 14

Pitch count stops Alex Meyer again.  A big day for Max Kepler.  A walkoff hit batsman for Fort Myers.  We'll try to get caught up over the next few days.

DURHAM 9, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-3.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching star:  A. J. Achter struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

Opposition stars:  Merrill Kelly pitched six innings, allowing two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Ray Olmedo was 3-for-4 with two walks, scoring three times and driving in two.  Wilson Betemit was 2-for-5 with a home run (his eighteenth) and a double, scoring twice and driving in two.

The game:  It was scoreless until the third, when Hak-Ju Lee homered and Mikie Mahtook singled in a run to put Durham up 2-0.  It stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when Betemit homered and Olmedo and Mahtook had RBI singles to make it 5-0.  Mike Fontenot had a two-run single in a four-run ninth that put the game out of reach.  The closest Rochester came to scoring was in the second, when a walk, a single, and a ground out put men on second and third with two down.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 0-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4.  Chris Colabello was 0-for-4.  Starter Alex Meyer struck out seven in 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks.

BOWIE 11, NEW BRITAIN 6 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Tony Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Chris Marrero was 2-for-4 with a grand slam (his sixth homer) and a walk, driving in five.  Buck Britton was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring three times and driving in one.  Niuman Romero was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  New Britain scored once in the first and Bowie tied it in the second.  In the fourth, two-run singles by Mike Gonzales and Rosario put the Rock Cats up 5-1.  Bowie tied it in the sixth on two singles, a hit batsman, and Marrero's grand slam.  Later in the sixth, David Frietas singled in a run and Mike Yastrzemski doubled in another to give the BaySox a 7-5 lead.  It was 8-6 after eight.  In the ninth, Britton tripled in a run and scored when David Adams circled the bases on a triple-plus-error, making the score 11-6.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with two walks.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Starter Pat Dean pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 9, ST. LUCIE 8 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Jones struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Gavin Cecchini was 1-for-3 with a home run (his fifth) and a walk, driving in three.  Jared King was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Eudy Pina was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.

The game:  St. Lucie led 4-3 after two innings.  In the fourth, Dalton Hicks delivered a two-run single and Adam Brett Walker II followed with an RBI double to put Fort Myers in the lead at 6-4.  Albert Cordero homered in a two-run sixth to tie the score, but the Miracle got an RBI triple by Kepler and a run-scoring single by Tyler Grimes in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead at 8-6.  Cecchini hit a two-run homer in the eighth to once again tie the score, this time at eight.  In the ninth, a walk, a passed ball, another walk, a wild pitch, and an intentional walk loaded the bases with two out.  Travis Harrison then was hit by a pitch to win the game.

Of note:  Harrison was 0-for-3 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in two.  Hicks was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Walker II was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Starter Steven Gruver pitched five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on ten hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 10, BELOIT 3 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Max Murphy was 2-for-5 with a home run, his fourth.

Pitching star:  Mat Batts struck out seven in six innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk.

Opposition star:  Josh Ludy was 2-for-2 with a walk.

The game:  Alex Swim singled in a run in the top of the first, but Matt Chapman doubled one home in the bottom of the first.  It stayed 1-1 until the sixth, when Swim singled in another run and scored on a J. D. Williams triple to make it 3-1.  Cedar Rapids then put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh.  Christensen and Garver each had a two-run double in the inning, with the fifth run scoring on a wild pitch.  Each team scored once in the eighth and once in the ninth.

Of note:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Swim was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

ELIZABETHTON 5, GREENEVILLE 3 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Trey Vavra was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and driving in two.  Jeremias Pineda was 4-for-5 with a double and a run.  Tanner English was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Michael Cederoth struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks.  Cameron Booser struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Dereck Rodriguez struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Yonathan Mejia was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Jacob Nottingham was 2-for-4 with a run.  Aaron Greenwood struck out two in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.

The game:  Vavra had a two-run double in a three-run first and the Twins added two more in the third to go up 5-0.  Greeneville got two in the fifth and one in the sixth to get back into the game.  The Astros had the tying run on base with two out in the sixth and with one out in the ninth, but could not do any more scoring.

GCL RAYS 5, GCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Tyree Davis was 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, scoring once.  Ruar Verkerk was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Josh Guyer pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Zach Jones retired all five batters he faced, striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Henry Centeno pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Matt Reida was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Chris DeMorais was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  An error led to a Rays run in the first.  It stayed 1-0 until the fifth, when Davis tripled and scored on a Verkerk single to tie it at one.  DeMorais singled in a run in the top of the eighth, but the Twins got the run back in the bottom of the eighth to tie it at two.  In the ninth, Sanay's RBi single and Reida's two-run double put the Rays up 5-2.  Silva doubled and scored in the bottom of the ninth, but the Twins did not bring the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-4.

DSL TWINS 4, DSL WHITE SOX 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Luis Martinez was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Gabriel A. Ynfante was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Starter Moises Gomez struck out five in four innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks.  Erick Balbuena pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Randolph Perez struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Starter Luis Arteaga struck out five in four innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and two walks.  Ramon Beltre was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Daniel Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.

The game:  An error gave the Twins a 1-0 lead in the third.  A Bradley Valdez RBI single tied it at one in the fourth.  In the fifth, three walks, a wild pitch, and a passed ball resulted in two White Sox runs and a 3-1 lead.  There was no more scoring until the eighth, when RBI singles by Ynfante and Antonio Tovar tied the score and a bases-loaded walk put the Twins in the lead.  The White Sox had men on second and third with none out in the ninth, but a strikeout, an intentional walk, and two more strikeouts ended the game.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-2 with two walks.
