Minor Details: Games of August 19

Brett Lee continues to get it done for Fort Myers.  Mat Batts picks up the slack after Kohl Stewart is removed "as a precaution".  A wild game in the DSL.

ROCHESTER 7, BUFFALO 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Pedro Florimon was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.  Chris Colabello was 1-for-3 with a home run (his ninth) and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Duffey struck out six in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk.  Lester Oliveros struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Brett Wallace was 3-for-4 with a home run (his thirteenth) and a double, driving in two.

The game:  Two walks and two singles resulted in two Rochester runs in the first inning.  Colabello homered in the third to make it 3-0 and Florimon hit a two-out three-run double in the fourth to give the Red Wings a 6-0 lead.  Wallace homered in the fourth to put Buffalo on the board but Ramirez got the run back with a home run of his own in the fifth.  The Bisons got one more run in the sixth but did not threaten to get back into the game.

Of note:  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Chris Herrmann was 0-for-4 with an RBI.

RICHMOND 5, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN NEW BRITAIN (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting stars:  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Starter Virgil Vasquez had struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk, before the game was suspended.  Mason Melotakis pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Adalberto Mejia struck out seven in six innings of "relief", allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks.  Kelby Tomlinson was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.

The game:  An error put New Britain up 1-0 in the second, but Richmond came back with four in the fourth to take control of the game.  Tomlinson had a three-run triple in the inning and came in to score on a wild pitch.  The Rock Cats got a two-run double from Knudson in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3, but could do no more.  The Flying Squirrels got an insurance run in the eighth on two singles and a wild pitch.  The last seven New Britain batters were retired.

Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-4 with a double.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-3.  Nate Hanson was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

NEW BRITAIN 5, RICHMOND 1 IN RICHMOND (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Matt Koch was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Tony Thomas was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Pitching stars:  Jason Adam pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Daniel Turpen struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Kelby Tomlinson was 2-for-4 with a run.  Blake Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Elliot Blair was 1-for-2 with a walk.

The game:  New Britain had five one-run innings.  Koch singled in a run in the second, a run scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, Reynaldo Rodriguez tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, Nate Hanson singled in a run in the sixth, and a single, two errors, and a sacrifice fly plated a run in the seventh.  Richmond loaded the bases with one out in the third but did not score until the seventh, when three consecutive one-out singles brought their lone run home.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 3-for-4.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Hanson was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mike Gonzales was 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch.

FORT MYERS 3, BRADENTON 2 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-5 with a run.  Niko Goodrum was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Brett Lee pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on eleven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Nick Burdi pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Zack Jones pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Eric Wood was 3-for-4 with a double.  Jose Osuna was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Walker Gourley was 3-for-4.

The game:  Bradenton got three singles to get on the board in the second inning.  Harrison had an RBI single and a second run scored on an error in the third to put Fort Myers up 2-1, but the Marauders got three more singles in the third to tie it at two.  Two singles and a sacrifice fly scored what turned out to be the winning run for the Miracle in the fifth.  Bradenton twice got a man to second after that but could not score again.

Of note:  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3 with a walk.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, QUAD CITIES 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Engelb Vielma was 4-for-4 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in two.  Tanner Vavra was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  J. D. Williams was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Mat Batts struck out six in five shutout innings of relief, giving up two hits.  Jake Reed pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Marc Wik was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.  Brett Booth was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Jose Fernandez was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  Wik homered in the first and a wild pitch brought home a Quad Cities run in the second.  Vielma had an RBI single in the bottom of the second to cut the River Bandits lead to 2-1.  Wik singled in a run in the third to make it 3-1.  The scored stayed 3-1 until the sixth, when Vielma homered to bring Cedar Rapids within one at 3-2.  In the eighth, Vavra doubled in a run to tie the score and two runs scored on an error to give the Kernels a 5-3 advantage.  The last thirteen Quad Cities batters were retired.

Of note:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 1-for-5.  Chad Christensen was 3-for-5 with a double.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Max Murphy was 0-for-4.  Starter Kohl Stewart pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk, before being removed due to a possible injury.

PRINCETON 8, ELIZABETHTON 7 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Alex Real was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and a double, scoring twice.  Tanner English was 1-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Will Hurt was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  C. K. Irby struck out five in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Carter Burgess was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Thomas Milone was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Hector Montes was 3-for-5 with a run.

The game:  English homered in the first, but Princeton came back with five in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.  Riley Unroe had a two-run single in the inning.  Elizabethton came back, scoring twice in the fourth and getting a two-run homer from Real in the fifth to tie it at five.  Milone doubled in a run in the sixth to give the Rays a 6-5 lead, but the Twins scored twice in the seventh on two walks, a balk, a passed ball, another walk, and a double steal of second and home, going up 7-6.  In the ninth, however, two errors led to two unearned runs for Princeton and an 8-7 lead.  Elizabethton went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Trey Vavra was 0-for-5 with a run.  Starter Michael Cederoth struck out five in four innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks.

GCL ORIOLES 6, GCL TWINS 5 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Rainis Silva was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in three.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Reyson Zoquiel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Eduardo Del Rosario pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Jemile Weeks was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Ademar Rifaela was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  An error and two passed balls led to two Orioles runs in the second inning.  In the third, Silva doubled in one and two more scored on an error to give the Twins a 3-2 lead.  The Twins added two more in the fourth on a Silva two-run double.  The Orioles scored once in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3 and then took the lead with a three-run sixth.  Alex Mercedes tripled in the tying run and Weeks singled in the go-ahead run.  The Twins did not get a hit after the fourth inning.

Of note:  Dubal Baez was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Starter Brandon Easton pitched three innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL PADRES 8 AT TWINS (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Antonio Tovar was 3-for-5 with two runs.  Roni Tapia was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Jose Ramirez struck out seven in six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks.  Luis Hernandez pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Westhers Magdaleno was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Fabian Castillo was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and two hit-by-pitches, driving in three.  Jose Sotillo was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

The game:  It was tied at two after three.  The Twins scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to go up 4-2, but the Padres got one back in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3.  In the bottom of the sixth, four singles, a walk, an error, and a wild pitch resulted in four Twins runs and a seemingly comfortable 8-3 lead.  In the seventh, the Padres got a walk, two hit batsmen, and two wild pitches, all of which only gave them one run.  In the eighth, two walks, three wild pitches, and two singles scored two more runs to make it 8-6.  Castillo hit a two-run homer (following a walk) in the ninth to tie it up.  In the tenth, the Twins got a man to second base with one out and an error brought home the winning run.  The game featured nine errors (six by the Padres), twelve walks (eight given up by Twins pitchers), four hit batsmen (all by Twins pitchers) and eleven wild pitches (seven by Twins pitchers).

Of note:  Luis Martinez was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run.  Junior Amarante was 1-for-3 with a run.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-5 with an RBI.
