My sister who lives in Alaska is visiting us for the next two days. Sorry if there's not much today. I may not even get in a Random ten of my own.

  4. I'm going to be heading down to the Twinned Cities for the Speedy Ortiz, Two Inch Astronaut, and Krill show on May 2nd. It's a Saturday. My friend I normally hang out with is going to be out of the country that weekend, and I'm hoping some of y'all can either come to the show (all those bands are awesome!) or can grab a beer beforehand. It's a pretty long way out, but I just wanted to get it out there ASAP because I know I'm bad at these types of things and if I don't start planning early I'll psyche myself out of social interaction!

We all need to gain the upper hand.
An edge to do even better than we can.
No one seemed to care when it brought back the fans.
It’s a broken record, strike up the band for the broken man.

A crowd so loud and a son so very proud.
The powers that be counting money, handing me a crown.
Only now they decide that it’s time to take a stand.
It’s a broken record, strike up the band for the broken man

  8. Forgot to mention that I was comped two tickets went to "Gang of Four" last night at the Varsity. I put scare quotes around that because the band was Andy Gill and three 20-something euro-dudes. The bassplayer and drummer were decent (although the bass player struck too many rock god poses) but the lead singer looked like he belonged as an extra in the Twilight movies. We were joking that he probably was Andy Gill's son-in-law and needed him to support his daughter somehow.

Anyway it was o.k. Glad the tickets were comped as I would have been disappointed if I had spent $25. Pretty small crowd too.

** I have completely forgotten about this album.

Ah, yeah. I enjoyed this album a bit and liked all of the songs (even those couple sprawlers), but unlike Silent Shout, which I still toss on every once in a while, Habitual has had zero shelf life.

  10. Re: the video in the post.

I thought the first Moritz von Oswald Trio album was great, and everything since then has been boring and lifeless. Maybe I came across Vertical Ascent at just the right time, but I don't even bother to follow up any MvOT news anymore.

    1. It's an older track. I wiki'd "Minimal Techno" (because I forgot what fell into that category), clicked to "Basic Channel" and then saw MvO and Voigt as the guys in that. I pondered if any would be good, and MvO did a bangup job on that remix, so went with that. I scanned through some Gas, but much of that doesn't even have a beat.

I tried the Trio but never really got into any of it. I may have confused MvO with a Sasu Ripatti moniker, too.

  11. Other bands hungry joe doesn't get the big fuss about: The War On Drugs.

I've got the first two albums, and I can't tell the songs apart between the two. I mean, it's okay, but not Best Album of the Year stuff. Am I missing something?

    1. Lost in the Dream was a HUUUUGE step up from their previous releases. Definitely Best Album of the Year stuff, IMO.

You know who I never got? Ani DiFranco. Wanted to like her, but her music kept getting in the way. (Others that never moved the needle for me: Tori Amos, Pearl Jam, Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis, Bright Eyes/Connor Oberst, and Soundgarden head up a very long list of Citizen faves that don't do anything for me.)

    2. I listened to Slave Ambient after a friend described in such a way that made me think it would be pretty much my favorite album ever. I was deeply unimpressed.

Lost in the Dream, though? Awesome from front to back. No doubt AotY.

    3. Sweet. Duly noted. I won't just pack up and move on then. Like I said, I don't not like the first two, but I just wasn't getting all the hype. I'll make my way to their next in due time.

      1. I have never listened to them flat out, but Kozalek made this because of them and it made me laugh quite a bit.
