Happy Birthday–April 5

Bill Dinneen (1876)
Wid Conroy (1877)
Bill Lachemann (1934)
Ron Hansen (1938)
Rennie Stennett (1951)
Andy McPhail (1953)
Cris Carpenter (1965)
Ross Gload (1976)
Jorge De La Rosa (1981)

The brother of Rene and Marcel Lachemann, Bill Lachemann is a long-time minor league manager, coach, and scout.

Andy McPhail, of course, was the general manager of the Twins from 1985 through 1994, a period which included both of the Twins' World Series titles.  Most recently, he was the President of Baseball Operations for the Baltimore Orioles.  He does not appear to be working in baseball at the present time.

We would also like to wish a happy birthday to Mrs. brianS.

There are no players with connections to the Minnesota Twins who were born on this day.

The staff of Happy Birthday would like to wish everyone a happy and blessed Easter.

  1. as always, thanks for all you do around here, Padre.

The Mrs. and I are spending a quiet day at home, before heading to Napa for a couple of days to celebrate her making the Big Turn.

  2. I couldn't let a name like Wid pass by without further investigation. His full name is William Edward Conroy, but "Wid" is apparently not contraction of his first two names. His SABR bio says:

From an early age, William demonstrated a love for baseball, spending much of his free time playing on Camden's sandlots, and earning the nickname "Widow," which would later be shortened to "Wid" during his playing career. Conroy pleaded ignorance as to the origin of his peculiar moniker, but fellow Camdenites asserted that he earned the name because of "his motherly interest in youngsters smaller and younger than himself, who used to number themselves in his 'gang.'"
