April 17, 2015: Wild

They won game one (something they don't like doing) against a team on the road (they don't do that a lot, either). It was the Blues (they've never done that). Good times, Citizens.

  1. Saw a lot of Blues jerseys around here and put up with some sort of Blues-promoting repurposed musical number on the radio station yesterday; I'm enjoying this.

    1. I know, I'm sorta conflicted. I'm a fan of all things Minnesota, but I got to like the Blues when I lived in STL for 18 years. At least I know that one of them is going to advance to the next round.

  2. Today, I am exactly as old as Thomas Jefferson was on July 4, 1776: 12,147 days. I'll try to be equally as productive.

    1. For some reason, this prompts me to imagine Thomas Jefferson having an "oh, shit!" moment and quickly finishing that thing he had to do before all the guys showed up to the Hall.

    2. Steal something and claim it was yours the whole time. Look! You're as productive as Jefferson!

      1. They would NEVER put a thief on Mount Rushmore, you take that back!

Also, as of 21 days ago, I am old enough to be POTUS ... so I got that going for me.

        1. My Dad has been older than the president of the United States since he was 50 years and 40 days old. I am now older than that and still have not been older than the president. I'm obviously younger than Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, but I am older than Ted Cruz and Scott Walker. Rand Paul is older than me, too.

                      Edit:
The hashtag got me thinking this probably should have been a twitter conversation. But I've got like 4 months of tweets to catch up on, so it'd take me a while.
Hey, did anyone see the latest Breaking Madden? Can you tell me if it's any good? because I haven't gotten to January tweets yet. Please no spoilers.

      2. Sally Hemings raises eyebrow at the whole "and claim it as yours the whole time" thing....

        1. Give yourself a buck (because I haven't figured that out yet).
I definitely wanted the thread to go here, but didn't have the time to be clever.

      3. Sheenie doesn't have any half sisters with whom I can cohabitate (that I know of).

  3. The Twins, in a transparent effort to keep my interest, have selected my oldest son to be the junior PA announcer for Saturday's game. If you happen to be at the game Saturday, you will be able to tell all your friends and family that you saw his debut before he became famous.

      1. My favorite part so far was hearing him practice after lights out.

"Batting third, the first baseman Joe Mauer!"

  4. They may not have been historically good in playoff road games, but they've been the darling of the league in road games this year.

      1. I was really happy to see they got that 2nd empty netter. Much better to close the door rather than spend the last minute fighting off attacks in your own end.

  5. Saw the video of Moli and various Twins players wishing the Wild good playoff luck. Of course ii urges them to go get the Stanley Cup so he can drink out of it. Because it's all about him, right?

  6. This all reminds me...my kid has wanted to make a website. While I don't actually want a 9-yr-old to have a website, I'd love it if he was able to do that.
Any suggestions for kid-friendly platforms, simple training, etc that might provide him a constructive activity?

It will really cut down on our paper usage if he can just air all his father-related grievances online like a normal person instead of making protest signs and posters.

    1. The Mozilla Developer Network is a great resource. I think all but a few small things can be done without an externally visible site. For instance, you can create an HTML page on your desktop and access it with file://C:/Users/sean/Desktop/thatfile.html (substitute in the right user name and right path for different OSes).

Can't he just get a Pinterest page like a normal kid?

        1. No one else at the office WGOM talks about this kind of thing.

          FTFM.

The Calvin/Dad relationship is remarkably apt.

  7. I mentioned this a while back, but as it's getting closer I figured I'd try to get something more set in stone:

I'm going to be in Minneapolis in two weeks for the Speedy Ortiz show on May 2nd. I've not met any of y'all and I'd love to get together for a mini caucus, and if anyone else wants to go to the show I'd highly recommend it since they're awesome live! The doors for the show are at 8, so it'd be something late afternoon/dinner time. Not sure where, but my preference would be somewhere within walking distance that serves good burgers and good beer. I'll gladly defer to the expertise of the locals on what the best choice would be.

    1. I've got a family obligation in St. Cloud in the early afternoon, and I'm not sure how long it will go.
I hope I can make it, but I won't be able to confirm until I show up.

    2. I have it on my Calendar since you first mentioned it. My big thing is that I may be concerted out as I will be going back and forth from Chicago Wed-Thur for the Replacements and then Bobby Bare Jr. is Friday night. I'd say right now it's 50-50 for me. The obvious place to meet would be The Depot, which is right next door.

      1. And Sheenie is just getting back from LA then, so I'm not sure if I'll be still single parenting or have any availability. Like yickit, I'll be there if I can.

    3. I've got stuff going on the previous two evenings, but I'm hoping I can sneak away long enough come by and say hello. (Or whatever it is that spies say when they greet someone.)

  8. I'm listening to the Cubs game this afternoon. Obviously, Kris Bryant's debut is a Big Deal, and they're talking about him batting fourth in his first game. It got me wondering if maybe Kent Hrbek had batted fourth in his debut, given his power and given the Twins' lack thereof at that time. Turns out he batted eighth. The legendary Pete Mackanin (thirty career home runs, with twelve his season high in 1975) was the cleanup hitter. Gary Ward, the only other batter with power in the lineup, led off (to be fair, it was his rookie season). Others in the lineup were Dave Engel, Mickey Hatcher, Danny Goodwin, John Castino, Sal Butera, and Lenny Faedo. Brad Havens was the starting pitcher. Good grief, that was a terrible team.

    1. Hrbek had just been called up from Class A ball. Morneau came up from AAA. That might be the reason why Hrbek was eased into it a little more. Plus of course different managers and different eras.

        1. In the Cal League, pretty much all of them put up stats like that. At least his home games were at Visalia and not at High Desert, which I think is worse than Colorado pre-humidor.

  9. Correct. In a way, that's more impressive, because he was joining a team that actually had some good players.

    1. I don't understand why a guy always has to have a terrible outing before he's put on the disabled list. Do these guys refuse to admit they're injured? Does the club not believe them? I know we've discussed this for a long time, but it's ridiculous to see it keep happening time after time after time.

        1. It's possible he hurt it during the game, but it's not like this is the first time something like this has happened.

  10. AMR, are wild turkeys still in mating mode? I saw a flock grazing in a cornfield on the way home and the toms were all displaying real hard - full tail fans, puffed out chests, etc.
