Minor Details: Games of July 11

Most years, by this point in the summer, my life has slowed down significantly.  That is showing no signs of happening this year.  So, all I can tell you is that I'll do the best I can to keep these minor league reports current.

To the games:  Oswaldo Arcia stays hot.  The Lookouts bats stay cold.  Kohl Stewart pitches very well.  So does Randy Rosario.  Cody Stashak finally gives up a run, but only one.  Five pitchers combine on a shutout for the GCL Twins.  A big inning sinks the DSL Twins.

ROCHESTER 8, SYRACUSE 4 IN SYRACUSE

Batting stars:  Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  James Beresford was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Danny Ortiz was 1-for-5 with a home run (his eighth) and three RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Michael Tonkin pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  A. J. Achter struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Kevin Keyes was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Ex-Twin Darin Mastroianni was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Tony Gwynn, Jr. was 3-for-5 with a run.

The game:  RBI singles by Jorge Polanco and Beresford put the Red Wings ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Chiefs got two in the bottom of the fifth to back up 3-2.  Keyes singled in a run in the seventh to make it 4-2.  RBI doubles by Arcia and Reynaldo Rodriguez in the eighth tied it, and Ortiz followed with a two-run homer to give the Red Wings a 6-4 advantage.  The Red Wings added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth.

Of note:  Polanco was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Pat Dean struck out five in four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks.

MISSISSIPPI 5, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN MISSISSIPPI

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Scott Atchison pitched two perfect innings.  Tim Shibuya pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Matt Lipka was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  David Rohm was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Greg Ross pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  The Braves opened the game with three singles, a walk, and another single, scoring four runs before the Lookouts ever came to bat.  They added a run in the fourth to make it 5-0.  The Lookouts got their lone run in the fifth but never threatened to get back into the game.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 1-for-4.  Marcus Knecht was 0-for-4.  D. J. Baxendale pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 6, CLEARWATER 1 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 3-for-4 with a double.  Michael Qeusada was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching starsKohl Stewart pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Dallas Gallant pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Corey Williams pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Malquin Canelo was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Chace Numata was 2-for-4 with a double.  Aaron Brown was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The gameSwim doubled in a run in the first and a sacrifice fly brought one home in the third.  Brown singled in a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1, but Tanner Vavra delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1.  Swim singled in another run in the fifth and Garver doubled one home in the seventh.  The Threshers put men on first and third in the seventh and had two on in the ninth but did not score again.

Of noteZach Granite was 1-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, KANE COUNTY 0 IN KANE COUNTY

Batting starsBrian Navaretto was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Sean Miller was 2-for-4.

Pitching starsRandy Rosario pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Cameron Booser struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Colin Bray was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Brad Keller struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks.

The game:  The Kernels opened the second inning with three singles and, with one out, Navaretto delivered a two-run single for all the runs of the game.  The Cougars got a man to third in the second inning but did not advance anyone that far after that.

Of noteRafael P. Valera was 0-for-4.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a run.

ELIZABETHTON 5, JOHNSON CITY 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Amaurys Minier was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  A. J. Murray was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, scoring twice.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Cody Stashak struck out seven in six innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks.  Onesimo Hernandez pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Kuo Hua Lo pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Allen Staton was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Magneuris Sierra was 3-for-4.  Edmundo Sosa was 3-for-4.

The game:  Minier doubled in a run in the third to put the Twins up 1-0.  Staton tied it in the fourth with a home run, but the Twins scored in the bottom of the inning to back in front 2-1.  It stayed 2-1 until the eighth, when Minier had a run-scoring double and Murray hit a two-run homer to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Manuel Guzman was 0-for-4.

GCL TWINS 2, GCL RED SOX 0 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Brian Olson was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Jose Martinez pitched four shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk with no strikeouts.  Miguel Gonzalez struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit.  Chris Mazza pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Jagger Rusconi was 2-for-3 with a double.  Tyler Spoon was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Kevin Steen struck out seven in four innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and no walks.

The game:  All the scoring came in the first inning.  A single and an error put men on first and second with one out.  Diaz doubled home one run and a passed ball brought home the second.  And that was it.  The Red Sox put two men on base in the first and second innings but never did so again.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with a run.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-4 with a run.  Trey Cabbage was 1-for-4.

DSL GIANTS 14, DSL TWINS 6 AT GIANTS

Batting stars:  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Jean Carlos Arias was 1-for-3 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Antonio Tovar was 0-for-1 with two walks and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Luis Bellorin pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jose Rivero was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Mecky Coronado was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs.  Biecker Mendoza was 2-for-4 with a walk and four runs.

The game:  The Twins led 2-1 after three, but a three-run homer by Francisco Medina was part of a four-fun fourth that left the Giants up 5-2.  The Twins tied it with three in the fifth, but Coronado hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Giants a 7-5 lead.  It was 8-6 after six, but the Giants got six runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.  Two-run doubles by Rivero and Manuel Geraldo were key in the inning.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Francisco Hernandez was 0-for-2 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
