Minor Details: Games of July 30

Max Kepler and Jason Wheeler lead the Lookouts.  Stephen Gonsalves pitched five hitless innings to lead the Miracle.  The Kernels score early and late to take a victory.  A. J. Murray leads the E-Twins.  The GCL Twins get swept.  The DSL Twins are shut out.

CHATTANOOGA 3, PENSACOLA 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 3-for-4 with two home runs, his fifth and sixth.  Shannon Wilkerson was 2-for-4.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched eight shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks with six strikeouts.  J. T. Chargois struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk and a strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Yovan Gonzalez was 2-for-3.  Josh Smith pitched an eight-inning complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  In the third, a run scored on a sacrifice fly and Kepler later homered to make it 2-0.  Kepler hit another home run in the eighth for a 3-0 lead.  The only time the Blue Wahoos got a man to third was in the eighth, on three consecutive two-out singles.  A ground out ended the inning.

Of note:  D. J. Hicks returned to the Lookouts lineup and was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3.

FORT MYERS 4, DAYTONA 0 IN DAYTONA

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a home run (his third) and a walk.  Zach Granite was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Logan Wade was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.

Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves struck out eight in five shutout innings, giving up no hits and three walks.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Nick Burdi had a perfect perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Taylor Sparks was 1-for-3 with a walk, the only hit the Tortugas had.  Carlos Gonzalez pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.

The game:  Garver homered in the first and Wade homered in the third to give the Miracle a 2-0 lead.  Granite singled in a run in the fourth and Vielma singled one home in the sixth to make it 4-0.  The lone Tortugas hit was a one-out single by Sparks in the seventh.

Of note:  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-5.

CEDAR RAPIDS 9, CLINTON 5 IN CLINTON

Batting stars:  Alex Real was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his third) and a walk, scoring twice.  Brett Doe was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Tyler Kuresa was 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs.

Pitching star:  Jared Wilson struck out two in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Pat Leyland was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  James Alfonso was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Martin Peguero was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

The game:  Real hit a two-run homer in a four-run fourth that put the Kernels up 5-0.  The LumberKings battled back, however, and the lead was cut to 6-5 through seven.  Austin Diemer hit a two-run homer in the eighth and Doe singled in a run in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Zack Larson was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Zach Tillery struck out five 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks.

ELIZABETHTON 13, JOHNSON CITY 4 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  A. J. Murray was 3-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and a double, scoring twice and driving in four.  Alex Perez was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring three times and driving in three.  Amaurys Minier was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Samuel Clay struck out seven in five shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Chris Chinea was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Allen Staton was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Eliezer Alvarez was 3-for-5 with a run.

The game:  Minier drove home two on a single-plus-error in the first and Perez hit a three-run double in a five-run second that put the Twins in front 7-0.  The Cardinals did not get back into the game.

Of note:  Daniel Kihle was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer (his fifth) and a walk.

GCL RAYS 5, GCL TWINS 4 AT TWINS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Kolton Kendrick was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-1 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Miguel Gonzalez pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks with one strikeout.  Hector Lujan struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Max Cordy pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Grant Whitley was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Gilbert Marrero was 0-for-1 with three walks and a run.  Jose Disla pitched 3.1 innings, allowing one run despite five hits and three walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Luis Martinez singled in a run in the second.  It stayed 1-0 until the sixth, when a hit batsman, a walk, and three singles produced three Rays runs.  A Whitley homer was followed by a walk and three wild pitches in the ninth to give the Rays a 5-2 lead.  The Twins scored two in the ninth and put the tying run on third with one out, but a pair of ground outs ended the game.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Brian Olson was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

GCL RAYS 7, GCL TWINS 2 AT RAYS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Rowan Ebersohn was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Roni Tapia was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Luis Martinez was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Moises Gomez pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Matz Schutte pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Adrian Rondon was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Oscar Rojas was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jesus Ortiz struck out five in three shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  The Rays got two in the first, the Twins got two in the second, and it stayed 2-2 through four.  In the fifth, though, the Rays struck for five to take control of the game.  Ryan Caldwell capped the inning with a two-run double.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-3.  Robert Molina was 1-for-4.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Jovani Moran lasted only two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

DSL DODGERS 6, DSL TWINS 0 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Jorge Acosta was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Huascar Ynoa pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Luis Bellorin pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up only a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jimy Perez was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his tenth.  Luis Paz was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.  Leonardo Crawford struck out ten in five shutout innings, allowing four hits and no walks.

The game:  The Dodgers scored one in the first, Perez hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and three runs came in on one hit in the seventh (three walks, three errors).  The Twins only once got a man past second base.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 1-for-4.  Junior Amarante was 1-for-4.  Antonio Tovar was 0-for-4.
