Minor Details: Games of August 3

The Red Wings waste good pitching from Jose Berrios.  The Lookouts waste better pitching from D, J. Baxendale.  An E-Twins rally falls short.  Emmanuel Morel and Jadison Jimenez lead the DSL Twins to the organization's only win.

GWINNETT 3, ROCHESTER 1 IN GWINNETT

Batting stars:  Xavier Avery was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  James Beresford was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  A. J. Achter pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Christian Bethancourt was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his third) and a double.  Cedric Hunter was 2-for-4 with a home run (his eighth) and two runs.  Victor Mateo pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Avery homered in the second to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.  The Braves tied it in the fourth on Hunter's homer.  Bethancourt delivered a two-run homer in the sixth to give the Braves a 3-1 lead.  The Red Wings advanced a man to third base with two out in the third but did not do so again.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-4.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-4.

JACKSON 2, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN JACKSON

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  J. T. Chargois pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Ian Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Tyler Marlette was 1-for-3 with a home run, his third.  Dylan Unsworth pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

The game:  Polanco homered in the first, but the Generals got the run back in the bottom of the first when Miller doubled and scored.  Marlette homered in the second, and that was it for the scoring.  The Lookouts got the tying run to second with two out in the seventh and again with two out in the ninth, but that was it.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 0-for-4.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-1 as a pinch-hitter.

JOHNSON CITY 9, ELIZABETHTON 8 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting stars:  Chris Paul was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and a double, driving in four.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Brad Hartong was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Kuo Hua Lo pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Allen Staton was 4-for-4 with a grand slam (his fifth homer), scoring twice and driving in five.  Magneuris Sierra was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Chris Rivera was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  Paul had a two-run double in the third and the Twins added a run in the fourth to go up 3-1.  The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the fourth to tie it 3-3.  It stayed tied until the sixth, when Staton's grand slam capped a five-run inning that put the Cardinals seemingly in control of the game at 8-3.  It was 9-3 after seven but the Twins came back in the eighth, getting a two-run homer from Paul and a two-run double by Palacios as part of their own five-run inning that cut the lead to 9-8.  That was where the comeback stalled, though.  The Twins had the tying run on second in both the eighth and the ninth, but could not bring him around.

Of note:  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Brian Olson was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Miles Nordgren pitched five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

GCL TWINS AT GCL ORIOLES

DSL TWINS 8, DSL GIANTS 2 AT GIANTS

Batting stars:  Emmanuel Morel was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Edwin Franco was 3-for-5 with a double and three runs.  Jhonathan Alvarez was 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Jadison Jimenez struck out six in five innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks.  Luis Gil pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Juan Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with a home run (his third) and two walks, scoring twice.  Robinson Medrano was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Jose Malta pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Rodriguez homered to give the Giants a 1-0 lead, but the Twins took over from there.  In the second, Jorge Parra had a two-run double and scored on Morel's double to make it 3-1 Twins.  Morel doubled in two more in the fourth, Alvarez singled one home in the fifth, and the Twins added two in the sixth to go ahead 8-1.

Of note:  Jean Carlos Arias was 1-for-3.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.
