Minor Details: Games of August 4

A three-run homer beats the Red Wings.   A big day for Kennys Vargas.  A Miracle comeback falls short.  Tanner English leads the Kernels to victory.  A three-run homer also beats the E-Twins.  Good starting pitching for the GCL Twins in a split.  The DSL Twins lose late.

GWINNETT 5, ROCHESTER 2 IN GWINNETT

Batting stars:  Jose Martinez was 2-for-4 with a run.   James Beresford was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Pitching star:  Michael Bowden pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Cedric Hunter was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his ninth.  Mallex Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Sugar Ray Marimon pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  The Braves scored single runs in the second and third to go up 2-0.  The Twins tied it 2-2 in the fifth on a walk and two singles.  Hunter delivered a three-run homer in the seventh to make the difference in the game.  The Red Wings brought the tying run to the plate with two out in the ninth, but a ground out ended the game.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a double.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-4.

CHATTANOOGA 10, JACKSON 3 IN JACKSON

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fifth) and a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Max Kepler was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Alex Wimmers struck out three in two perfect innings.  D. J. Johnson pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Ian Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Zach Shank was 2-for-3 with a run.  Edwin Diaz struck out eight in five innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and four walks.

The game:  The Lookouts took an early 2-0 lead, but the Generals tied it with two in the third and Miller doubled home a run in the fifth to give them a 3-2 advantage.  In the seventh, however, Walker II had a two-run double to cap a five-run inning that put the Lookouts ahead to stay.  They added three insurance runs in the eighth.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 1-for-5 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with two walks and two runs.  D. J. Hicks was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Tim Shibuya pitched three innings, giving up two runs on three hits and no walks with no strikeouts.

ST. LUCIE 7, FORT MYERS 4 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Marcus Knecht was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Zach Jones struck out four in two shutout innings.  Corey Williams pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Yeixon Ruiz was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Matt Oberste was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Dominic Smith was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  The Mets led all the way, but the Miracle hung in there.  It was 3-2 after one and 4-3 after four.  In the sixth, though, two singles, a triple, and two more singles brought home three Mets and put the game out of reach.  The Miracle kept trying, though.  Mejia singled home a run in the seventh and they brought the tying run up to bat in both the seventh and the ninth.

Of note:  Alex Swim was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Mat Batts pitched five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, DAYTON 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Tanner English was 5-for-5 with three doubles, scoring twice and driving in three.  Nick Gordon was 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Brian Navaretto was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Keaton Steele pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Luke Bard pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Cory Thompson was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Avain Rachal was 1-for-2 with a double and a run.

The game:  Each team scored once in the third.  The Kernels took control after that, scoring three in the fourth and four in the seventh.  English had a two-run double in the seventh inning.  Twelve Dragons were retired prior to a two-out single in the ninth.

Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-5 with an RBI.  Brett Doe was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.

JOHNSON CITY 5, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting stars:  Manuel Guzman was 3-for-4 with a double and a run.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  Tyler Stirewalt pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Chris Chinea was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fourth.  Ricardo Bautista was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run. Ramon Santos pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Each team scored once in the second and it stayed 1-1 until the fifth.  Chinea's three-run homer capped a four-run inning for the Cardinals that put them up 5-1.  The Twins got one in the seventh, brought the tying run up to bat that inning, and brought the winning run up to bat in the ninth, but did not score again.

Of note:  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Chris Paul was 0-for-4.  Andro Cutura pitched five innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

GCL TWINS 7, GCL ORIOLES 0 AT TWINS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Ariel Montesino was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Christian Cavaness, making his professional debut, was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Luis Martinez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Lachlan Wells pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Brandon Poulson struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  None.  The Orioles had only two hits, both singles.

The game:  Montesino hit a two-run homer in the first and that would be all the runs the Twins needed.  They added three in the third to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Blake Schmit was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.

GCL ORIOLES 5, GCL TWINS 4 AT ORIOLES (GAME 2--8 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Lean Marrero was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Robert Molina was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Luis Arraez was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.

Pitching star:  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Branden Becker was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Jason Heinrich was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Seamus Curran was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  The Twins got two in the first and for a while it looked like it might hold up, as it was still 2-0 through five.  The Orioles got two in the sixth to tie it and each team scored once in the seventh, making it 3-3 as we went to extra innings.  Marrero homered in the eighth to put the Twins up 4-3 but in the ninth, Daniel Fajardo singled in the tying run and Curran doubled home the winning run.

Of note:  Trey Cabbage was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

DSL GIANTS 8, DSL TWINS 3 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jorge Parra was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Edwin Franco was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Miguel De Jesus struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk.  Erick Balbuena pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Manuel Geraldo was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Juan Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Norwith Gudino pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was 1-1 through six.  Geraldo hit a three-run triple in the seventh that put the Giants up 4-1.  The Twins got two in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-3.  They loaded the bases in the eighth but could not score.  in the ninth, Rodriguez had a two-run double in a four-run inning that put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-5.  Junior Amarante was 1-for-4 with a run.
