Minor Details: Games of August 9

The Red Wings hang on for a win.  Stephen Wickens and Kennys Vargas lead an offensive explosion for the Lookouts.  The Miracle loses late.  Randy LeBlanc's first start of the season is a good one for the Kernels.  Jermaine Palacios just keeps hitting for the E-Twins.

ROCHESTER 6, CHARLOTTE 5 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Xavier Avery was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two runs.  Argenis Diaz was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a home run (his thirteenth) and a walk, driving in two.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.  Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Rob Brantly was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jason Coats was 2-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Matt Davidson was 1-for-3 with a home run (his eighteenth) and a walk.

The game:  Dayan Viciedo's two run single in the third tied it 2-2.  In the fourth, three singles and a Byron Buxton double produced three runs to put the Red Wings ahead 5-2.  It was 6-3 going to the bottom of the seventh.  The Knights loaded the bases with none out in that frame, but only scored once.  Davidson homered in the eighth to make it 6-5.  After that the Knights only got a two-out single in the ninth.

Of note:  Buxton was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  James Beresford was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-4.  Michael Bowden struck out six in six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk.

CHATTANOOGA 14, MOBILE 2 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Stephen Wickens was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in six.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a home run (his seventh) and a walk, driving in two.  Niko Goodrum was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring three times and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  Alex Wimmers struck out two in two perfect innings.  Brandon Peterson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Socrates Brito was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Garrett Weber was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Evan Marzilli was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.

The game:  The BayBears scored in the first, but it was all Lookouts after that.  Vargas homered in the second to tie it 1-1.  Wickens had a two-run single in the third to make it 3-1.  Wickens had a three-run double to cap a four-run fourth and increase the lead to 7-1.  A seven-run sixth put the finishing touches on the victory.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-5 with a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

PALM BEACH 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN PALM BEACH

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Ryan Eades pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts.  Corey Williams retired all four men he faced, striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Breyvic Valera was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.  C. J. McElroy was 2-for-4 with a run.  Nick Petree pitched eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  The Miracle scored on a ground out in the first and scored again in the sixth on Garver's RBI double.  Valera and Voit each doubled in the bottom of the sixth to produce the first Cardinals run.  In the eighth, a sacrifice fly tied it 2-2 and Collin Radack singled in the go-ahead run.  The Miracle got a two-out walk in the ninth, but no more.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-4.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 with a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, BOWLING GREEN 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  T. J. White was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Pat Kelly was 3-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Randy LeBlanc, in his first start of the season, pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks with two strikeouts.  Ethan Mildren struck out two in two perfect innings.  Yorman Landa pitched two shutout innings despite giving up four hits.

Opposition stars:  Riley Unroe was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Hyrum Formo pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Nick Gordon singled in a run in the first and a run was walked home in the second.  It was 2-0 until the seventh, when White hit a two-run homer.  The Hot Rods did not get a man on second until the eighth and did not advance him.

Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Gordon was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.

ELIZABETHTON 6, BLUEFIELD 5 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 4-for-5 with two runs.  A. J. Murray was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  Miles Nordgren pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Matt Morgan was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, driving in two.  Aaron Attaway was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Freddy Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

The game:  A walk and four singles produced three Twins runs in the third to give them a 4-0 lead.  They still led 5-2 through seven, but the Blue Jays scored three times in the eighth, helped by two errors, a hit batsman, and a walk, to tie it 5-5.  The Twins got the lead back in the bottom of the eighth on Murray's RBI single.  The Blue Jays went down in order in the ninth.

Of note:  Daniel Kihle was 1-for-5 with a double.  Brad Hartong was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Brian Olson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
