Minor Details: Games of August 21

An excellent game for Jose Berrios.  D. J. Baxendale does okay, too.  A couple of big innings sink the Miracle.  Randy Rosario pitches well in a losing effort.  Dereck Rodriguez has a rare bad outing.  The GCL Twins get ten-runned.  Junior Amarante leads the DSL Twins to victory.

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 3, ROCHESTER 2 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE (14 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out ten in seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks.  Mark Hamburger pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits with one strikeout.  Michael Tonkin pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits with one walk.

Opposition stars:  Austin Romine was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Jose Pirela was 2-for-5 with a walk.  Michael Pineda pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Vargas doubled and scored on an Ortiz single to put the Red Wings up 1-0 in the second.  The RailRiders tied it in the third.  Each team scored once in the eighth, making it 2-2.  That's where it stayed until the fourteenth.  The Red Wings had put men on first and second with one out in the eleventh, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.  In the fourteenth, Romine delivered a two-out RBI single to end the game.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-6.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-5 with a walk.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-6.

CHATTANOOGA 7, PENSACOLA 2 IN PENSACOLA

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his fifth), a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Max Kepler was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale struck out six in five innings, giving up one run despite five hits and five walks.  Nick Burdi struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three walks.

Opposition stars:  Beau Amaral was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Alex Blandino was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Ryan Wright was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Walker II doubled in a run in the first and Shannon Wilkerson homered in a two-run third that made it 3-0.  It was 4-1 after five.  Michael then hit a three-run homer in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-5 with a run.

BRADENTON 9, FORT MYERS 3 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching star:  Jake Reed pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Wyatt Mathisen was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Jordan Steranka was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Frank Duncan pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  In the first Steranka had a two-run single and Mathisen a two-run double, putting the Marauders up 4-0.  RBI singles by Christensen and Kanzler cut the lead to 4-2 in the second, but the Marauders got three in the third and the game was never close again.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-4.  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-4.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-4.  Matt Summers, normally a reliever, started and pitched two innings, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk with no strikeouts.

CLINTON 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN CLINTON

Batting stars:  Sean Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-3 with a walk.  T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching star:  Randy Rosario struck out eight in seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Wayne Taylor was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run.  Brock Hebert was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Lukas Schiraldi struck out eight in five innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks.

The game:  In the third Miller doubled, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch to put the Kernels up 1-0.  In the fourth Hebert doubled and scored on a pair of fly outs to tie it 1-1.  There was no more scoring until the ninth.  Taylor led off with a triple, the next two batters struck out, but Austin Cousino singled to end the game.

Of note:  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4.

PULASKI 14, ELIZABETHTON 5 IN PULASKI

Batting stars:  Kamran Young was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fourth.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  A. J. Murray was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Nathan Mikolas was 4-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Carlos Vidal was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer (his ninth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Jesus Aparicio was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.

The game:  Young hit a three-run homer in the second and Wade singled in a run in the third to put the Twins ahead 4-0.  It was pretty much all Pulaski after that.  Vidal hit a three-run homer in a six-run third that put the Yankees up 6-4.  They followed that with a five-run fourth that put the game out of reach.  Kane Sweeney had a two-run double in the fourth inning.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Daniel Kihle was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched three innings, giving up six runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

GCL RED SOX 10, GCL TWINS 0 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Roni Tapia was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Luis Martinez was 1-for-2 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Eduardo Del Rosario pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Matz Schutte pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Trent Kemp was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.  Andy Perez was 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.  Emmanuel De Jesus struck out five in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  It was actually close for six innings.  The Red Sox scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-0 lead.  In the seventh, however, the Red Sox had an eight-run inning to put the game out of reach.  There was no big hit, but they had six singles and five walks.  The Twins only once got a man as far as third base.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 0-for-3.  Ariel Montesino was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Kolten Kendrick was 1-for-2.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL ROJOS 8 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Junior Amarante was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs.  Antonio Tovar was 2-for-5 with a home run (his second) and two RBIs.  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Miguel De Jesus pitched four innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Fredderi Soto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Leonardo Ortiz was 4-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Johnny Sims (how is there a DSL player named Johnny Sims?) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Aristedes Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  A six-run second put the Twins ahead 6-2.  They had a double, five singles, a walk, and a hit batsman in the inning.  The Rojos tied it 6-6 with a four-run fifth, but a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and Tovar homered in the sixth to put the Twins back in front 8-6.  The Rojos again came back, scoring two in the seventh to tie it 8-8.  The first two Twins in the ninth were retired, but Amarante doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Edgar Herrera's infield single to win the game.

Of note:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4.
