  1. I really kind of have mixed feelings about Santana pitching well. Obviously I want the Twins to win. On the other hand, the better he pitches, the more likely it is the Twins will bring him back next year. Oh, well, worry about next year when it gets here, I guess.

        1. I know he is. For me, that doesn't make any difference. You're going to pay him the same whether he pitches for you or not. Cutting him and adding a major league minimum salary (Berrios) doesn't significantly add to the payroll. I'd obviously rather trade Santana than cut him, but if you can't get anything for him, that just emphasizes that Ryan shouldn't have given him the contract in the first place.

            1. Oh, there are others I'd like to see go, too. What I want next year is a rotation (in whatever order) of Hughes, Gibson, May, Duffey, and Berrios, with Milone, Taylor Rogers, and Pat Dean to step in if necessary. But as long as Santana, Nolasco, and Pelfrey are around, the Twins are going to use them to block the young players.

              1. Pelfrey is not, yet, under contract for 2016. So that's eight starters for next year. Berrios isn't coming up until mid-April so that gives the Twins some extra time to figure out who to drop in favor of him.

                1. Sure, If I thought what we've seen over the last couple of starts was the real Ervin Santana, I'd be happy to have him. I just don't think it is. I think he's still a very average pitcher who's just had a couple of good games, which happens sometimes.

                  1. Santana has been a better starting pitcher in his career than Phil Hughes has been. If memory serves, the Twins have had three 10+ K starts since Liriano was traded away and Santana has had two of them in back-to-back starts. They've also talked about a flaw in his delivery that they've worked on and made adjustments prior to these two starts, so that adds to the hope that what we saw prior was more of a fluke. I don't expect him to pitch like he has the last two games, but if he can get back to just being a league-average pitcher, which is something of real value, then there's no reason to bail on him. Anyway, there is a better chance of me pitching for the Twins next year than of the Twins just straight up releasing Santana. I'd be stunned if they did that with Nolasco.

                    1. I'd be okay with keeping Santana rather than Hughes. I just don't want both of them. And I especially don't want both of them plus Nolasco and Pelfrey.

                    2. Pelfrey won't be back, and I'm sure the Twins will try to trade Nolasco, but I doubt they'll get any takers even with a lot of salary relief. If May continues to dominate as a reliever, it could be real hard for the Twins to put him back in the rotation. Could be like 2003, when Johan started the year in the bullpen and then was put in the rotation in the second half. I have a feeling the Twins will start Berrios in AAA and then bring him up in June, assuming they don't call him up this month.

                    3. You may be right about all those things, but the only one that will make me happy is Pelfrey not coming back.

                1. Not the way he's pitched this year. Hopefully, he gets his control figured out, but he had a real ugly year. He's got the stuff to dominate if he throws strikes, but that's the big question right now and the Twins really fixate on control.

    1. According to Provus, first Twins starter with consecutive 10+ strikeout games since Liriano in 2012. Checking B-R's Play Index, prior to tonight only two Twins pitchers since 2000 have at least two consecutive 10+ K games. Zero points for guessing the other.

  2. I think May needs to be the backup closer. At least then I won't feel as bad when he doesn't start next year.

  3. I sure hope this means more starts for Buxton. What a great game. Two catches I'm not sure even Hicks gets to, a double that I think only one other major leaguer would go for and robbed by Gomez of what probably would have been a triple or maybe even ITPHR if it takes a funny bounce.

    1. On the radio pregame Molitor was saying that he wants to get Hunter in there against the lefty tomorrow. I'm hoping the game today makes him reconsider.
