Minor Details: Games of August 26

A brilliant performance by Jose Berrios.  Adam Brett Walker II hits his twenty-ninth homer.  A big day for Edgar Corcino.  A pair of two-run homers sinks the E-Twins.  Rich Condeelis pitches well.

ROCHESTER 6, SYRACUSE 0 IN SYRACUSE

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and a walk, driving in two.  Xavier Avery was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  James Beresford was 3-for-5 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios struck out twelve in seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and one walk.  Michael Tonkin struck out two in a perfect inning.  A. J. Achter pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Matt Skole was 2-for-4.  Matt den Dekker was 1-for-4 with a double.  Ex-Twin P. J. Walters struck out four in three innings, allowing one run on two hits.

The game:  Josmil Pinto singled in two runs in the first to put the Red Wings up 2-0.  Vargas homered in the third, Avery doubled home a run in the fifth, Oswaldo Arcia homered in the sixth, and the Red Wings added a run in the eighth.  The Chiefs' biggest threat came in the second, when they put men on second and third with none out.  A line out and two strikeouts ended the inning.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 3-for-5 with a run.  Pinto was 1-for-5 with two RBIs.  Arcia was 1-for-4 with a home run, his twelfth.

TENNESSEE 8, CHATTANOOGA 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Travis Harrison was 1-for-2 with a home run (his fifth) and two walks, scoring twice.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4 with a home run, his twenty-ninth.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  Nick Burdi struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Albert Almore was 2-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and a double, scoring twice and driving in four.  Dan Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with a home run (his seventh), a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Ryan Williams pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was 1-1 after three, but the Smokies scored five in the fourth to take control of the game.  Almora had a three-run double in the inning.  The Lookouts never got closer than four runs the rest of the game.

Of note:  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-4.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3 with a walk.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-4.  Aaron Slegers pitched four innings, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

PEORIA 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Edgar Corcino was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Austin Diemer was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched two shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Harrison Bader was 4-for-4 with two triples, scoring once and driving in three.  Oscar Mercado was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  Darren Seferina was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.

The game:  The Kernels led 2-0 after three, but the Chiefs scored three in the top of the fourth to go up 3-2.  The Kernels came right back in the bottom of the fourth, as Diemer's RBI double and Sean Miller's run-scoring single made it 4-3 Cedar Rapids.  The Chiefs went into the lead to stay in the fifth, though, as Bader's two-run triple capped another three-run inning and make the score 6-4.  The Kernels were never closer than two again and never got the tying run on base.

Of note:  Miller was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  T. J. White was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Sam Clay pitched five innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

JOHNSON CITY 4, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting stars:  Kamran Young was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-4.

Pitching star:  Anthony Mciver struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Allen Staton was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his eighth and ninth) and four RBIs.  Chandler Hawkins struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing one hit.  Magnueris Sierra was 2-for-4 with a run.

The game:  Staton hit a two-run homer to put the Cardinals up 2-0 in the first.  Four singles produced two Twins runs in the second to tie the score.  There was no more scoring until the sixth when Staton struck again, hitting another two-run homer to give the Cardinals a 4-2 advantage.  The Twins put two men on in the eighth but could do nothing with them.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-5.  Manuel Guzman was 0-for-3.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-2.  Brian Olson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched six innings, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

GCL RAYS 6, GCL TWINS 2 AT RAYS (7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Bryant Hayman was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-2 with an RBI.  Roberto Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Rich Condeelis struck out four in three innings, giving up an unearned run on a hit and a walk.  Vadim Balan struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Miguel Hernandez was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Oscar Rojas was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Rafelin Lorenzo was 1-for-1 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

The game:  Gonzalez singled in a run in the fourth to tie it 1-1, but the Rays got three in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game.  Hernandez had a two-run triple in the inning.  Montesino singled in a run in the fifth to cut the margin to 4-2, but the Rays got two more in the bottom of the fifth on Lorenzo's two-run single and the Twins could not get back into the game.

Of note:  Christian Cavaness was 0-for-3.  Luis Arraez was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-3.  The game went seven innings because of the completion of another game, which was recapped with the August 25 games.
