Minor Details: Games of August 28

A very bad game for Taylor Rogers.  Jason Wheeler and Shannon Wilkerson carry the Lookouts.  Logan Wade and Mat Batts lead the Miracle.  Walks doom the E-Twins.  Jovani Moran and Miguel Gonzalez pitch well for the GCL Twins.

SYRACUSE 9, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Xavier Avery was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out four in 2.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits.  Tim Shibuya struck out four in three innings, giving up a run on four hits.

Opposition stars:  Scott Sizemore was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Tyler Moore was 2-for-5 with a home run and a double, driving in three.  Paolo Espino pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

The game:  The Chiefs scored once in the first and once in the second, then put the game away with six runs in the third.  Moore hit a two-run homer and Sizemore had a two-run triple in the inning.  Avery hit a two-run double in the bottom of the third to put the Red Wings on the board, but they never threatened to get back into the game.

Of note:  James Beresford was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4.  Taylor Rogers pitched 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 5, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN BIRMINGHAM

Batting stars:  Shannon Wilkerson was 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Nick Burdi struck out two in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two walks.

Opposition stars:  Danny Hayes was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.  Tim Crabbe struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk.

The game:  RBI singles by Polanco and Kepler gave the Lookouts a 2-0 lead in the third.  They added to in the seventh and one in the eighth.  The Barons had only two hits in the game and did not get a man past second base.

Of note:  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4 with a walk.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.

BRADENTON 5, FORT MYERS 3 IN FORT MYERS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Engelb Vielma was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Tanner Vavra was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Mat Batts pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks with two strikeouts.  Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  Tyler Jay pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Chris Diaz was 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Justin Maffei was 3-for-6 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Tyler Eppler pitched seven innings, allowing an unearned run on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  An error put the Miracle ahead 1-0 in the second.  Diaz singled in a run in the third and Maffei singled one home in the fifth to make it 2-1 Marauders.  It stayed 2-1 until the eighth, when an error brought home another Miracle run to tie it 2-2.  Each team scored once in the tenth to make it 3-3.  In the eleventh, Diaz delivered a two-out two-run triple to provide the go-ahead runs for the Marauders.  The Miracle could manage only a two-out single in the bottom of the eleventh.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-5.  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-5.

KANE COUNTY AT CEDAR RAPIDS

Rained out.

KINGSPORT 9, ELIZABETHTON 6 IN ELIZABETHTON (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Brian Olson was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a walk, scoring twice.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his third) and a walk.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-5 with a home run, his ninth.

Pitching star:  Onesimo Hernandez struck out six in six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Luis Ortega was 3-for-5 with a home run (his second) and a walk, scoring twice and driving in three.  Milton Ramos was 4-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.  Kevin Kaczmarski was 1-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk, scoring three times.

The game:  The Twins got one in the first, one in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.  It was 6-3 after seven, but it was all Mets after that.  Ortega hit a two-run homer in the eighth and Kaczmarski homered in the ninth to tie it 6-6.  In the tenth, with men on second and third with one out, two walks brought home the go-ahead run.  After a popup, two more walks made it 9-6.  The Twins could not bring the tying run up to bat in the bottom of the tenth.

Of note:  Christian Cavaness, making his Appalachian League debut, was 0-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with two runs.

GCL RED SOX 1, GCL TWINS 0 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Ariel Montesino was 2-for-4.  Roberto Gonzalez was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Kolton Kendrick was 0-for-2 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Jovani Moran pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Miguel Gonzalez struck out five in four shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Andy Perez was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Gerson Bautista pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.  Andrew Noviello was 1-for-2 with a double.

The game:  The lone run scored in the third inning on Perez' RBI single.  The Twins' biggest threat came in the first inning, when they had men on second and third with one out.  A line out and a ground out ended the inning.  They again had men on third with two out in the third.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4.
