Minor Details: Games of August 29

Danny Santana and Logan Darnell lead the Red Wings.  A fine game for David Hurlbut.  Trevor Hildenberger and Zach Jones provide relief for the Miracle.  Pitching failures cause the Kernels to drop a doubleheader.  C. K. Irby has a strong game out of the bullpen.

ROCHESTER 5, PAWTUCKET 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Danny Santana was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three runs.  James Beresford was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Carlos Paulino was 1-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell struck out eight in eight innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk.  Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Carlos Rivero was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Jorge Marban pitched three perfect innings with one strikeout.  Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4.

The game:  Santana homered leading off the first and again leading off the third to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth, Beresford's two-run single was part of a three-run inning that made it 5-0.  The lone Red Sox run came in the sixth on Rivero's RBI double.

Of note:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4.

CHATTANOOGA 5, BIRMINGHAM 2 IN BIRMINGHAM

Batting stars:  Stuart Turner was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with two walks.

Pitching star:  David Hurlbut pitched seven innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Matt Heidenreich struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks.  Danny Hayes was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Tony Thomas was 0-for-1 with three walks.

The game:  Harrison singled in a run in the first to give the Lookouts a 1-0 lead.  It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when Jorge Polanco had an RBI single and Kepler brought one home with a single-plus-error-plus-error.  The lone Barons run came in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the lead to 3-1, but the Lookouts scored twice in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 1-for-5 with a run.  Polanco was 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-3 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 7, BRADENTON 3 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-3 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Logan Wade was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Trevor Hildenberger pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Zach Jones struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Wyatt Mathisen was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his fourth.  Junior Lopez struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and two walks.  Jin-De Jhang was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

The game:  Knecht's two-run single in the first put the Miracle up 2-0.  Mathisen hit a three-run homer in the second to make it 3-2 Marauders.  Jason Kanzler tripled in a run in the fifth to tie it 3-3.  The Miracle then scored four in the seventh to put the game out of reach.  Four singles, two walks, and two errors provided the runs.

Of note:  Tanner Vavra was 0-for-2.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-2 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Stephen Gonsalves pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

KANE COUNTY 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  T. J. White was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Colin Bray was 3-for-3 with a double, scoring three times and driving in two.  Marty Herum was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Michael Perez was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  The Kernels scored two in the first to go ahead 2-1, but the Cougars got the runs right back in the second to take a 3-2 lead.  They added one in the sixth and two in the seventh to go up 6-2.  The Kernels opened the bottom of the seventh with two singles, but a double play took away any chance they had to come back.

Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Sam Gibbons pitched five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eleven hits and a walk with one strikeout.

KANE COUNTY 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--9 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Alex Real was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  Luke Bard pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Joe Munoz was 2-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and two doubles, scoring twice.  Colin Bray was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Ryan Burr struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

The game:  A wild pitch scored a run in the first and RBI singles by Murphy and Real in the third made it 3-0.  In the fifth, however, Henry Castillo's two-run double capped a three-run inning that tied it 3-3.  It stayed tied until the ninth, when Munoz led off with a home run that put the Cougars ahead.  The Kernels went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Of note:  Sean Miller was 0-for-5.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-4.  T. J. White was 1-for-4 with a run.  Randy LeBlanc struck out five in 4.2 innings but gave up three runs on eight hits and no walks.

KINGSPORT 5, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Christian Cavaness was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Zander Wiel was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Alex Perez was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  C. K. Irby struck out five in four shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Merandy Gonzalez struck out eight in six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks.  Gregory Valencia was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Arnaldo Berrios was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.

The game:  Cavaness tripled and scored in the first inning to put the Twins up 1-0.  The Mets came right back with two in the second on a Berrios double.  Perez singled in a run in the fourth to tie it 2-2, but the Mets went into the lead to stay in the fifth, opening the inning with a triple, a single, and two doubles to take a 5-2 lead.  The Twins got only one baserunner, a leadoff single in the ninth, after the fourth inning.

Of note:  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4.  Miles Nordgren pitched five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
