FMD: Concerts

I'm always struggling to go to more concerts, but more than anything the price of tickets get to me.  Like right now, I'm loving Jason Isbell's album from this summer, but $40 a piece plus fees puts it at nearly $100 for both of us to attend.  With all the adulting I've had to do lately - saving for a wedding, eventual down payment on a house, and way out there children - $100 seems like a lot more than it used to, even though I have the most income I've ever had.  I guess something's got to give, and it looks like it's live music.  But that's OK, bigger things are in the works.

    1. I may have added a CB seed to Pandora this morning. This song would fit just fine with what I usually listen to. I liked the little piano flourishes.
    B. I also added a Christmas seed.

  2. Not sure if folks have heard the news (sad, but not really surprising) that Scott Weiland passed away in his sleep last night. He was found on his tour bus in Bloomington.

    1. Core was the second CD I purchased for myself, and maybe the most rotated in the 90's (perhaps second only to Ten)

Also, we both have Tame Impala on our lists.

      1. Don't remember when I got Core, but it definitely got play once I had it.

Not a band I see on the FMD list very often but somewhat unsurprising that it'd be a duplicate of yours.

When're the Jayhawks playing and do you want company?

        1. Jan 2 at the Mainroom. So far it's me and the same coworker you met at the last Jayhawks show, some other "maybes". It will be fun if you can make it

      2. I reviewed Core for my h.s. paper. I treated it as if it were a Pearl Jam album released under a different name. No one understood the concept, and lots of people assured me that STP was actually a completely different band.

STP was the first concert I ever attended, at Roy Wilkins, touring off Purple. I went because the Meat Puppets opened. I've got a Puppets DVD with footage from that show.

  3. Your intro reminded me of an article I read earlier this week Adele is the largest selling artist on earth. So what’s she going to do about it?. Some thought about where the state of the music industry is currently.

"Use Ta Be My Girl" - The O'Jays
"Roll With It" - Steve Winwood

    T. Current 93* “Mockingbird” Judas as Black Moth

    *Notes:
5&T. On a big Coil and C93 kick last week into this. Nothing says "Holidays" like David Tibet's "singing", Jhonn Balance's screaming, and all the heresies both work into their lyrics about death and destruction.

    7. Exactly what it says. Weaves a new 10-minute piece out of elements of "Electric Counterpoint", "It's Gonna Rain", "Proverb", "Drumming", "Come Out", "Six Marimbas", "Three Movements", and "City Life". One might think it'd be sacrilege, but it's actually pretty good. Maybe the second best version on Reich Remixed (behind Ken Ishii's "Come Out" [which led me to buy a lot more Ken Ishii than I would have otherwise]), and thus one of two tracks from the compilation that made my regular mix. Also: R.I.P. Michael Kandel.

    8. One of two remixes on this live album. WTF? Oldham gotta Oldham. I find this album to be my favorite among the three live albums released at about that time (over Summer in the Southeast and Is It the Sea?.

I added a bit of actual seasonal music, but none came up.

  5. I used to go to more and higher-cost concerts. But nowadays, I don't want to go to a stadium/festival. And as my tastes have grown more esoteric ridiculous refined, I find shows are either fewer or cheaper.
    Looking at this week's list...
    Coil's dead.
It's not like C93 will or ever has played nearer the Twin Cities than Chicago. They're not really a touring group. They've played NYC and a bunch of European capitals though.) And I'm not so big a fan that I'd want to take a seat in a venue that could go to a hardcore devotee. (It'd be different if they toured more, but the next show they have in the US will probably be reselling at 10x face value or more.)

The Knife falls into a similar bucket, but without the hardcore fans.

When Dolfish last came through, cover was less than $10. Like Mitski or Lydia.
If Zack was going, I'd entertain seeing Colleen Green, and it'd be for a similar price.

The Orb (and others I listen to like Plastikman) play EDM festivals or dance clubs. Not my idea of a good time.
I wouldn't know how to even find out if anyone's playing "classical" composers (Reich, Pärt) I like around here.

I've only seen Bonnie Prince Billy twice. I'll go to lots more if he gives me the chance. (Last time through, I had a conflict.)

The birds all play for free, but their schedule is never posted. Based on the time of year, you can guess who might show up, but you really just have to take the time and go to the venue to see who's there. Which can waste your time if you're tired of hearing the same Canada Goose riff over and over.

The last time I paid more than $20 cover was Ha Ha Tonka opening up for Robert Randolph at the First Ave Mainroom. I'll admit that I went to a lot more concerts when they were touring the US heavily in their earlier days (coming to MN up to 5 times in one year and I'd be there each time).

I'd pay a lot if Björk ever came back to MN, even if I've nearly hated her last two albums. I think the last time she played in MN, I was still in high school.

    1. If Zack was going, I'd entertain seeing Colleen Green, and it'd be for a similar price.

I'm considering the show in April that she's opening (especially if she's touring with a drummer, I'd like to see that version of her show), I'll keep you posted.

I find myself going to a lot less shows because of time constraints, and most of the shows coming through Fargo are during the week and I feel like crap being out until 1:30 am. I think J & I might go to Babes in Toyland at the end of January, but that's TBD. Slayer is playing the day after my birthday, but I'll probably be out of town. I tried to get tickets for the Ween shows in Colorado, but failed. I guess I'm not sure when the next show I go to will be!

Most shows I go to are in the $15-$25 range. With an occasional ~$60.00 show. But typically I am buying for 1 so not a big deal. If you drink at the shows, that's were the real money gets spent. Also I'm rarely if ever going to an arena show, which tend to be spendier. Festivals of course are closer to $75-$100 but the price per band is pretty dang low.

    1. Heard that song by The Band on The Current this week ... started singing along ... and was soon joined by Kernel (though she didn't know the actual words). Proceeded to add The Last Waltz to my holiday wish list.

  8. I haven't been to a show since Lydia's guitarist stumbled off the stage in July, mostly because there haven't been any that hit the sweet spot of interest/price/availability for me. Cost is the primary limitation, though my parenting schedule makes it tricky too since I don't typically like to get babysitters when the boys are with me.

I'm seeing The Jayhawks in January, Courtney Barnett in April, and our office's annual trip to Johnny Cash night at the Cabooze is likely in play, so some shows to look forward to.

    1. Muse - "Guiding Light" - The Resistance
    2. Tame Impala - "Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control" - Lonerism
    3. Death Cab For Cutie - "Expo '86" - Transatlanticism

    6. The Strokes - "All The Time" Comedown Machine
    7. The Rocket Summer - "I Was So Alone" - Hello, Good Friend
    8. Kendrick Lamar - "King Kunta" - To Pimp A Butterfly
    9. Neutral Milk Hotel - "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
    10. P.J. Harvey - "On Battleship Hill" - Let England Shake

  9. The Valet has definitely cramped my concert-going (both in not having as much free time and not staying out late). I think Trombone Shorty was the only show I saw last year.

  10. I tried going to winter jam (Christian concert) twice this year, and it ended up selling out both times ($10 at the door). Very disappointed because skillet was playing, and I love me some skillet.

Highly suspect is playing Peoria next weekend for twenty dollars. So tempted to go, but there is just too much going on this time of year. That and I really don't go to concerts much any more
