FMD — 7″ Vinyl Singles

I haven't bought into the vinyl renaissance. Part of the reason is that I've bought vinyl when I was a kid and young adult, then cassettes, then CDs, now streaming services. I'm not going back to buying albums that I've owned on like three other platforms. Also I like the long playing feature that CDs, I-tunes, and streaming services provides. I do have about 20-30 albums that I've kept or collected along the way that I will listen to occasionally, but not often.

However, I am a sucker for 7" singles and continue to scour record stores and bookstores for cool singles, especially older classic singles, 70's AM Radio hits, and punk singles from the 1970s and early 1980s. I'm not looking for pristine copies that are collectibles, but actually well used (to a degree) records from the era. I also have an older type record player with a tinny speaker.

Basically I love listening to I Want to Hold Your Hand, Heartbreak Hotel, Brown Eyed Girl, etc., as they were probably listened to by some teenager some 50, 60 years ago. It's a thrill to think that someone was probably in their rec room or bedroom listening to this same record and hearing Elvis for the first time, or the Beatles after just seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show.

Have you gotten back into vinyl? Do your parents or grandparents still have a stash of 45rpms stuck in a closet somewhere (if so, hit me up). Do you sometimes just listen to old records and go over the cover, liner notes, and photos?

Also, drop 'em if you got 'em.

FMD 3-1-2019. Bless the internet.

Bless the internet for giving people a chance to either stay in their lane and listen to 3 artists over and over and over again, or fill up their brains with thousands of artists and dozens of genres of music. Im not as adventurous with my music playing these days (I dont even buy a handful of records anymore) but knowing that if I have to scratch an itch I can do it with a couple of clicks of my mouse.

Drop your 10 or just casually chat about music.
I'll be watching this Police concert for about the 20th time

FMD – Is this still a thing?

Once upon a time The Friday Random Ten spread across the interwebs like wild fire 🔥 Blog after blog of people dropping their lists and conversing about the results. I, myself, felt like I’d let everybody down if I’d forgotten to copy and paste my 10 on at least a half dozens blogs. Alas, as the quiet Beatle once said, “all things must pass.”

And with that, do whatever it is you do.

FMD – Is It Music?

Our little guy has really been excited about music over the last few months.  We've had a whole bunch of discussions about what is or is not music.  So we've watched STOMP, found some hambone solos, listened to some ambient compositions, and some harshly modern classical stuff.  Almost everything gets judged as "music".

I've been really surprised at how much he's into the atonal, non-melodic things.  The kid loves all the KidzBop stuff as well, but pretty consistently he requests "that one where it sounds like nature" (John Luther Adams - The Wind in High Places).

Anyway, what music (or not music) are you listening to?

FMD: Sweet Emotion

Lately it seems like people in the nation have been mentioning songs that serve a specific emotional purpose. “Songs for a breakup” and “get drunk and sing along,” etc. I once put together a mix for the songs to play when I was feeling melancholy. It seems we’ve all got them. Songs for hitting a precise emotional state.

So I’d love to hear what songs you love to hear when you’re feeling happy? Sad? Wistful? Angry? Like you keep falling short? Like you’ve worked hard and succeeded? So on, and so forth. If there’s a specific mood that a song has helped you identify, toss that out there too.

And we might as well drop our lists while we’re at it, right?

FMD: Concerts

I'm always struggling to go to more concerts, but more than anything the price of tickets get to me.  Like right now, I'm loving Jason Isbell's album from this summer, but $40 a piece plus fees puts it at nearly $100 for both of us to attend.  With all the adulting I've had to do lately - saving for a wedding, eventual down payment on a house, and way out there children - $100 seems like a lot more than it used to, even though I have the most income I've ever had.  I guess something's got to give, and it looks like it's live music.  But that's OK, bigger things are in the works.
