Friday Music Day: WGOM Venn Diagrams

Pepper: I think I need a Venn diagram showing the extent of overlap  in the musical interests of [you, DK, and Daneeka's Ghost].

nibbish: I would actually like to see a vein diagram of a lot of the people at the WGOM. free and I would have two nearly distinct circles.

Pepper: You've still got  control of FMD, right? If you can find a way to get people to indicate what they like out of a list of 25 or so artists or songs, I bet there's a way to represent it in some sort of visual way.

Daneeka's Ghost: Come up with a list of 20 and then everyone gets to add 5 of their own that everyone gets to weigh in on.

It could quickly spiral into insanity or actually be really interesting. I'd volunteer my spreadsheet enthusiasm for this.

Sure. Why not?

In addition to your random 10's this week, go here. Put a checkmark next to an artist you enjoy, then add five more musics you enjoy at the end.

  2. Um, Nibs, I believe DG meant that you were to come up with a list of 20. All of us would then indicate which of the 20 we like/appreciate, plus throw on up to 5 others we especially like that weren't in the 20.

So we'd need to start with something like this, though as you'll see I need people to add more artists.

    1. Well, I'm going to have to look up a lot of artists today, I see. What's my deadline for submission?

    2. After agonizing a bit over my picks, I decided that if I "like" an artist in the abstract (as in I enjoy it if it happens to be playing on the radio) but don't own any of their music or don't ever actively seek it out, I wouldn't count it.

      1. Me too. I mean, Elvis is alright, but I don't own or seek any Elvis, so I didn't check him off.

          1. I'm aware of who Elvis is, and if I wanted him in my collection he would be. It's not like it's some obscure guy I've never heard of.

      1. Ooooh, me likey! Can you create one that represents all the respondents or is that utter insanity?

Oh, and I'm not sure it'll satisfy nibs's need for a vein diagram, but perhaps this will do the trick.

        1. The program I have maxes out at a 4 member diagram.

I'm still working on how best to generate these quickly (while at the same time appearing interested in this conference about community college transfer students).

    3. My choices have been made and artists added ... folks who made their selections last week should see which artists have been added.

  3. Now that I have a Mac at work I've been able to hook myself up to my Apple Music & iTunes Match accounts. That's been a pleasant change because I've been listening to more albums and fewer random mixes recently. Of course, as I type this I'm listening to a mix of deep cuts by Christian McBride, but still.

    1. A friend of mine quite randomly gifted me a subscription to Spotify, so now I can listen on my phone. I find that I do that a lot now.

Spotify radio is of laughable quality, though. Pick an artist, and you'll get a pool of about six artists that it will just repeat.

      1. I've had decent luck with magicplaylist.co for creating more diverse playlists over the radio function. Just put in a seed song, and it'll generate a playlist for you.

  4. 1. “All Good Naysayers, Speak Up! Or Forever Hold Your Peace!” - Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
    2. “They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhh!” - Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
    3. “Surrender” - Familiars - The Antlers
    4. “Sprout and the Bean” - Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender
    5. “Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Rebuild! Restore! Reconsider!)” - Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
    6. “Blue Milk Girls” - The Quavers - Fell Asleep on a Train
    7. “Dear Marie” - Dessa - Parts of Speech
    8. “Ramshackle” - Beck - Odelay!*
    9. “Have You in My Wilderness” - Julia Holter - Have You in My Wilderness**
    T. “Baby Birch” - Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me

*Apparently there’s more to this song after a long pause. I need to look back at last week’s discussion about removing pauses.
**She put on a great show on Tuesday, complete with references to caucuses, cats, and creatures (which may or may not be cows) named Betsy.

  5. Can I add more than 5? I went for diversity in my adds, but there's a couple others I feel like should be included. Having both Isbell and DBT suggests we might not have the most diverse list...

    1. I know Isbell played with DBT for several years, but his newer stuff is very different. I think southern rock when I think DBT - Isbell is more folky americana.

    1. GAH! I don't know if we'll be back from the honeymoon yet. We haven't nailed down dates.

  6. 1. Welcome To The Jungle -- Guns N' Roses -- Appetite For Destruction
    2. Somewhere Else -- Lydia Loveless -- Somewhere Else
    3. Louder Than A Bomb -- Public Enemy -- It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
    4. Livin' Out On The Road -- Fred Eaglesmith -- Ralph's Last Show
    5. Runnin' With The Devil -- Van Halen -- Van Halen
    6. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds -- William Shatner -- Transformed Man
    7. 13 (Under A Bad Sign) -- Sloan -- Commonwealth
    8. Guess I'm Doing Fine -- Beck -- Sea Change
    9. Turbo Boy -- Guided By Voices -- Suitcase 1: Failed Experiments and Trashed Aircraft
    10. We're Coming Out -- The Replacements -- Let It Be

B1. Cortez The Killer -- Built To Spill -- Live
B2. Psycho Killer -- Talking Heads -- Talking Heads: 77

  7. Some of y'all need to circle back to fill out the newer additions to the Venn Diagram spreadsheet.

    1. Now we just need DG to work up some cool visual representations of the data! I can certainly create a basic bar chart (oooh, and a pie chart! which would be not very effective, but that's beside the point!). Maybe we could see which Citizens have the most and least overlap.

And, by the way, Nirvana is apparently the house band here, with The Beatles running a close second.

      1. And only Free and I have any love for Metallica...and I would only classify mine as "just enough like to tick the box".

        1. I almost checked that box, but when I thought about how often I've had the chance pull up one of their albums and went for Tool, QOTSA, Zeppelin, Judas Priest, SOAD, Primus, et al. instead, I just couldn't pull the trigger.

      1. So runner's bands got added to sheet 2, and therefore might not have been seen by everyone.

Go to columns CA through CF on sheet 1 and weigh in on those, everyone.
